Hybrid Behaviour of Markov Population Models
We investigate the behaviour of population models written in Stochastic
Concurrent Constraint Programming (sCCP), a stochastic extension of Concurrent
Constraint Programming. In particular, we focus on models from which we can
define a semantics of sCCP both in terms of Continuous Time Markov Chains
(CTMC) and in terms of Stochastic Hybrid Systems, in which some populations are
approximated continuously, while others are kept discrete. We will prove the
correctness of the hybrid semantics from the point of view of the limiting
behaviour of a sequence of models for increasing population size. More
specifically, we prove that, under suitable regularity conditions, the sequence
of CTMC constructed from sCCP programs for increasing population size converges
to the hybrid system constructed by means of the hybrid semantics. We
investigate in particular what happens for sCCP models in which some
transitions are guarded by boolean predicates or in the presence of
instantaneous transitions
Process algebra modelling styles for biomolecular processes
We investigate how biomolecular processes are modelled in process algebras, focussing on chemical reactions. We consider various modelling styles and how design decisions made in the definition of the process algebra have an impact on how a modelling style can be applied. Our goal is to highlight the often implicit choices that modellers make in choosing a formalism, and illustrate, through the use of examples, how this can affect expressability as well as the type and complexity of the analysis that can be performed
Iterated LD-Problem in non-associative key establishment
We construct new non-associative key establishment protocols for all left
self-distributive (LD), multi-LD-, and mutual LD-systems. The hardness of these
protocols relies on variations of the (simultaneous) iterated LD-problem and
its generalizations. We discuss instantiations of these protocols using
generalized shifted conjugacy in braid groups and their quotients, LD-conjugacy
and -symmetric conjugacy in groups. We suggest parameter choices for

Complementarity Problems over Symmetric Cones : A Survey of Recent Developments in Several Aspects
The complementarity problem over a symmetric cone (that we call the Symmetric Cone ComplementarityProblem, or the SCCP) has received much attention of researchers in the last decade.Most of studies done on the SCCP can be categorized into the three research themes, interior pointmethods for the SCCP, merit function methods for the SCCP, and various properties of the SCCP.In this paper, we will provide a brief survey on the recent developments on these three themes
Timed Soft Concurrent Constraint Programs: An Interleaved and a Parallel Approach
We propose a timed and soft extension of Concurrent Constraint Programming.
The time extension is based on the hypothesis of bounded asynchrony: the
computation takes a bounded period of time and is measured by a discrete global
clock. Action prefixing is then considered as the syntactic marker which
distinguishes a time instant from the next one. Supported by soft constraints
instead of crisp ones, tell and ask agents are now equipped with a preference
(or consistency) threshold which is used to determine their success or
suspension. In the paper we provide a language to describe the agents behavior,
together with its operational and denotational semantics, for which we also
prove the compositionality and correctness properties. After presenting a
semantics using maximal parallelism of actions, we also describe a version for
their interleaving on a single processor (with maximal parallelism for time
elapsing). Coordinating agents that need to take decisions both on preference
values and time events may benefit from this language. To appear in Theory and

A methodological approach to BISDN signalling performance
Sophisticated signalling protocols are required to properly handle the complex multimedia, multiparty services supported by the forthcoming BISDN. The implementation feasibility of these protocols should be evaluated during their design phase, so that possible performance bottlenecks are identified and removed. In this paper we present a methodology for evaluating the performance of BISDN signalling systems under design. New performance parameters are introduced and their network-dependent values are extracted through a message flow model which has the capability to describe the impact of call and bearer control separation on the signalling performance. Signalling protocols are modelled through a modular decomposition of the seven OSI layers including the service user to three submodels. The workload model is user descriptive in the sense that it does not approximate the direct input traffic required for evaluating the performance of a layer protocol; instead, through a multi-level approach, it describes the actual implications of user signalling activity for the general signalling traffic. The signalling protocol model is derived from the global functional model of the signalling protocols and information flows using a network of queues incorporating synchronization and dependency functions. The same queueing approach is followed for the signalling transfer network which is used to define processing speed and signalling bandwidth requirements and to identify possible performance bottlenecks stemming from the realization of the related protocols
Programmable models of growth and mutation of cancer-cell populations
In this paper we propose a systematic approach to construct mathematical
models describing populations of cancer-cells at different stages of disease
development. The methodology we propose is based on stochastic Concurrent
Constraint Programming, a flexible stochastic modelling language. The
methodology is tested on (and partially motivated by) the study of prostate
cancer. In particular, we prove how our method is suitable to systematically
reconstruct different mathematical models of prostate cancer growth - together
with interactions with different kinds of hormone therapy - at different levels

Analytical and experimental evaluations of the effect of broad property fuels on combustors for commercial aircraft gas turbine engines
The impacts of broad property fuels on the design, performance, durability, emissions, and operational characteristics of current and advanced combustors for commercial aircraft gas turbine engines were studied. The effect of fuel thermal stability on engine and airframe fuel system was evaluated. Tradeoffs between fuel properties, exhaust emissions, and combustor life were also investigated. Results indicate major impacts of broad property fuels on allowable metal temperatures in fuel manifolds and injector support, combustor cyclic durability, and somewhat lesser impacts on starting characteristics, lightoff, emissions, and smoke
