    Numerical study of scars in a chaotic billiard

    We study numerically the scaling properties of scars in stadium billiard. Using the semiclassical criterion, we have searched systematically the scars of the same type through a very wide range, from ground state to as high as the 1 millionth state. We have analyzed the integrated probability density along the periodic orbit. The numerical results confirm that the average intensity of certain types of scars is independent of \hbar rather than scales with \sqrt{\hbar}.     Scars on quantum networks ignore the Lyapunov exponent

    We show that enhanced wavefunction localization due to the presence of short unstable orbits and strong scarring can rely on completely different mechanisms. Specifically we find that in quantum networks the shortest and most stable orbits do not support visible scars, although they are responsible for enhanced localization in the majority of the eigenstates. Scarring orbits are selected by a criterion which does not involve the classical Lyapunov exponent. We obtain predictions for the energies of visible scars and the distributions of scarring strengths and inverse participation ratios.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Journeying to visibility:an autoethnography of self-harm scars in the therapy room

    This autoethnography explores the experience of a therapist negotiating the visibility of their self‐harm scars in the therapy room. Its form takes the shape of the author's personal meaning‐making journey, beginning by exploring the construction of the therapist identity before going on to consider the wounded healer paradigm and the navigation of self‐disclosure. A thread throughout is finding ways to resist fear and shame as both a researcher and counsellor. The author concludes by recounting fragments of sessions from the first client she worked with while having her scars visible. While not every therapist will have self‐harm scars, all therapists have a body which plays “a significant part of his or her unique contribution to therapy” (Burka, 2013, p. 257). This paper is, therefore, potentially valuable to any therapist, at any stage of development, who seeks to reflect on the role of the body and use of the self

    We study the low-temperature regime of an atomic liquid on the hyperbolic plane by means of molecular dynamics simulation and we compare the results to a continuum theory of defects in a negatively curved hexagonal background. In agreement with the theory and previous results on positively curved (spherical) surfaces, we find that the atomic configurations consist of isolated defect structures, dubbed "grain boundary scars", that form around an irreducible density of curvature-induced disclinations in an otherwise hexagonal background.     Vibrating soap films: An analog for quantum chaos on billiards

    We present an experimental setup based on the normal modes of vibrating soap films which shows quantum features of integrable and chaotic billiards. In particular, we obtain the so-called scars -narrow linear regions with high probability along classical periodic orbits- for the classically chaotic billiards. We show that these scars are also visible at low frequencies.
