    Desulfovibrio paquesii sp. nov., a hydrogenotrophic sulfate-reducing bacterium isolated from a synthesis-gas-fed bioreactor treating zinc- and sulfate-rich wastewater

    A hydrogenotrophic, sulfate-reducing bacterium, designated strain SB1(T), was isolated from sulfidogenic sludge of a full-scale synthesis-gas-fed bioreactor used to remediate wastewater from a zinc smelter. Strain SB1(T) was found to be an abundant micro-organism in the sludge at the time of isolation. Hydrogen, formate, pyruvate, lactate, malate, fumarate, succinate, ethanol and glycerol served as electron donors for sulfate reduction. Organic substrates were incompletely oxidized to acetate. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the closest recognized relative to strain SB1(T) was Desulfovibrio gigas DSM 1382(T) (97.5 % similarity). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain SB1(T) was 62.2 mol%, comparable with that of Desulfovibrio gigas DSM 1382(T) (60.2 mol%). However, the level of DNA-DNA relatedness between strain SB1(T) and Desulfovibrio gigas DSM 1382(T) was only 56.0 %, indicating that the two strains are not related at the species level. Strain SB1(T) could also be differentiated from Desulfovibrio gigas based on phenotypic characteristics, such as major cellular fatty acid composition (anteiso-C(15 : 0), iso-C(14 : 0) and C(18 : 1) cis 9) and substrate utilization. Strain SB1(T) is therefore considered to represent a novel species of the genus Desulfovibrio, for which the name Desulfovibrio paquesii sp. nov. is proposed.     International audienceThis paper describes the SemEval 2016 shared task on Aspect Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA), a continuation of the respective tasks of 2014 and 2015. In its third year, the task provided 19 training and 20 testing datasets for 8 languages and 7 domains, as well as a common evaluation procedure. From these datasets, 25 were for sentence-level and 14 for text-level ABSA; the latter was introduced for the first time as a subtask in SemEval. The task attracted 245 submissions from 29 teams

    Spectral decomposition of starbursts and AGNs in 5-8 micron Spitzer IRS spectra of local ULIRGs

    We present an analysis of the 5-8 micron Spitzer-IRS spectra of a sample of 68 local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). Our diagnostic technique allows a clear separation of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and starburst (SB) components in the observed mid-IR emission, and a simple analytic model provides a quantitative estimate of the AGN/starburst contribution to the bolometric luminosity. We show that AGNs are ~30 times brighter at 6 micron than starbursts with the same bolometric luminosity, so that even faint AGNs can be detected. Star formation events are confirmed as the dominant power source for extreme infrared activity, since ~85% of ULIRG luminosity arises from the SB component.     A Radial Velocity Survey of the Cygnus OB2 Association

    We conducted a radial velocity survey of the Cygnus OB2 Association over a 6 year (1999 - 2005) time interval to search for massive close binaries. During this time we obtained 1139 spectra on 146 OB stars to measure mean systemic radial velocities and radial velocity variations. We spectroscopically identify 73 new OB stars for the first time, the majority of which are likely to be Association members. Spectroscopic evidence is also presented for a B3Iae classification and temperature class variation (B3 - B8) on the order of 1 year for Cygnus OB2 No. 12. Calculations of the intial mass function with the current spectroscopic sample yield Gamma = -2.2 +/- 0.1. Of the 120 stars with the most reliable data, 36 are probable and 9 are possible single-lined spectroscopic binaries. We also identify 3 new and 8 candidate double-lined spectroscopic binaries. These data imply a lower limit on the massive binary fraction of 30% - 42%. The calculated velocity dispersion for Cygnus OB2 is 2.44 +/- km/s, which is typical of open clusters.     Parameter Degeneracy in Neutrino Oscillation -- Solution Network and Structural Overview --

    It is known that there is a phenomenon called "parameter degeneracy" in neutrino oscillation measurement of lepton mixing parameters; A set of the oscillation probabilities, e.g., P(nu_mu --> nu_e) and its CP-conjugate P(bar{nu}_mu --> bar{nu}_e) at a particular neutrino energy does not determine uniquely the values of theta_13 and delta. With use of the approximate form of the oscillation probability 'a la Cervera et al., a complete analysis of the eightfold parameter degeneracy is presented. We propose a unified view of the various types of the degeneracy as invariance of the oscillation probabilities under discrete mappings of the mixing parameters. Explicit form of the mapping is obtained either by symmetry argument, or by deriving exact analytic expressions of all the degeneracy solutions for a given true solution. Due to the one-to-one mapping structure the degeneracy solutions are shown to form a network. We extend our analysis into the parameter degeneracy in T- and CPT-conjugate measurement as well as to the setup with the golden and the silver channels, P(nu_e --> nu_mu) and P(nu_e --> nu_tau). Some characteristic features of the degeneracy solutions in CP-conjugate measurement, in particular their energy dependences, are illuminated by utilizing the explicit analytic solutions.Comment: 52 pages, 24 figures.     Contextual advertising

    Contextual advertising entails the display of relevant ads based on the content that consumers view, exploiting the potential that consumers' content preferences are indicative of their product preferences. This paper studies the strategic aspects of such advertising, considering an intermediary who has access to a content base, sells advertising space to advertisers who compete in the product market, and provides the targeting technology. The results show that contextual targeting impacts advertiser profit in two ways: First, advertising through relevant content topics helps advertisers reach consumers with a strong preference for their product. Second, heterogeneity in consumers' content preferences can be leveraged to reduce product market competition, especially when competition is intense. The intermediary has incentives to strategically design its targeting technology, sometimes at the cost of the advertisers. When product market competition is moderate, the intermediary offers accurate targeting such that the consumers see the most relevant ads. When competition is high, the intermediary lowers the targeting accuracy such that the consumers see less relevant ads. Doing so intensifies competition and encourages advertisers to bid for multiple content topics in order to prevent their competitors from reaching consumers. In some cases, this may lead to an asymmetric equilibrium where one advertiser bids high even for the content topic that is more relevant to its competitor. © 2012 INFORMS

    The High Angular Resolution Multiplicity of Massive Stars

    We present the results of a speckle interferometric survey of Galactic massive stars that complements and expands upon a similar survey made over a decade ago. The speckle observations were made with the KPNO and CTIO 4 m telescopes and USNO speckle camera, and they are sensitive to the detection of binaries in the angular separation regime between 0.03" and 5" with relatively bright companions (Delta V < 3). We report on the discovery of companions to 14 OB stars. In total we resolved companions of 41 of 385 O-stars (11%), 4 of 37 Wolf-Rayet stars (11%), and 89 of 139 B-stars (64%; an enriched visual binary sample that we selected for future orbital determinations). We made a statistical analysis of the binary frequency among the subsample that are listed in the Galactic O Star Catalog by compiling published data on other visual companions detected through adaptive optics studies and/or noted in the Washington Double Star Catalog and by collecting published information on radial velocities and spectroscopic binaries. We find that the binary frequency is much higher among O-stars in clusters and associations compared to the numbers for field and runaway O-stars, consistent with predictions for the ejection processes for runaway stars. We present a first orbit for the O-star Delta Orionis, a linear solution of the close, apparently optical, companion of the O-star Iota Orionis, and an improved orbit of the Be star Delta Scorpii. Finally, we list astrometric data for another 249 resolved and 221 unresolved targets that are lower mass stars that we observed for various other science programs.Comment: 76 pages, 6 figures, 11 table

    Gate-tuned quantum Hall states in Dirac semimetal (Cd1-xZnx)3As2

    The recent discovery of topological Dirac semimetals (DSM) has provoked intense curiosity not only on Weyl physics in solids, but also on topological phase transitions originating from DSM. One example is controlling the dimensionality to realize two-dimensional quantum phases such as quantum Hall and quantum spin Hall states. For investigating these phases, the Fermi level is a key controlling parameter. From this perspective, we report here the carrier-density control of quantum Hall states realized in thin films of DSM Cd3As2. Chemical doping of Zn combined with electrostatic gating has enabled us to tune the carrier density over a wide range and continuously even across the charge neutrality point. Comprehensive analyses of the gate-tuned quantum transport have revealed Landau level formation from linearly dispersed sub-bands and its contribution to the quantum Hall states. Our achievements pave the way also for investigating the low energy physics near the Dirac points of DSM.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure
