    Ambon Banana-Tree Sap Stimulated Endothelial Cell Migration in Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) Induced with Inflammatory Mediator IL-1

    Ambon banana-tree (Musa paradisiaca var.sapientum) sap (ABT sap) contains active substances that can stimulate the wound healing process such as: flavonoid, saponin, ascorbic acid. Those substances are needed in an important phase of wound healing called angiogenesis through activation of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) pathway that stimulates actin reorganization in endothelial cell migration and proliferation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of banana-tree sap in stimulating cells migration, VEGF and nitric oxide (NO) level in Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) culture that induced by pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1 (Interleukin-1). The ABT sap was obtained by pressing a fresh Ambon banana stem, then was mixed with culture medium into 0.125%, 0.25% and 0.5% concentration. The ABT sap then was used for treating HUVECs cell that induced by IL-1 200 ng/mL for 48-hours. The result of this study shows that Ambon banana-tree sap increased HUVECs cell migration. However, after 48-hours treatment with ABT sap showed no difference in the VEGF and NO level in the culture media. These results suggested ABT sap able to increase migration to HUVECs that promising for wound healing agent.     The strawberry sap beetle, Stelidota geminata (Say), is a major pest of strawberries in the northeastern United States. Further knowledge of the migratory habits of this insect pest can enhance the effectiveness of pest management strategies. This nitidulid was shown to migrate from its overwintering sites to one of its primary reproductive sites, strawberry fields, in late May. The beetle population peaked in the third week in July, 1993 in the strawberry field and then gradually declined. In 1994, the peak, as well as the total population, was much greater than in 1993. Furthermore, S. geminata was concentrated in the transition areas surrounding the strawberry fields prior to the ripening of the fruit

    This is the River Tavy Salmon Action Plan Final document produced by the Environment Agency in 2000. This final Salmon Action Plan (SAP) for the River Tavy catchment has been produced after consideration of feedback from external consultation. It provides a list of the agreed issues and actions for the next five years to maintain and improve the River Tavy salmon stock. The actions presented within this Salmon Action Plan clarify the important issues and factors currently limiting the salmon stock on the river. The resolution of these issues should ensure that a sustainable salmon population will be maintained for future generations. An attempt has been made to cost these actions, identify possible sources of funding and to provide a timescale for action. This Action Plan aims to promote long term collaboration and co-operation between the Agency and other interested parties to effectively and efficiently manage the stock of salmon on the River Tavy

    Analysis of Mono-, Di- and Oligosaccharides by CE Using a Two-Stage Derivatization Method and LIF Detection.

    A sensitive CE with LIF method has been developed for quantitative analysis of small carbohydrates. In this work, 17 carbohydrates including mono-, di- and oligosaccharides were simultaneously derivatized with 4-fluoro 7-nitrobenzo furazane (NBD-F) via a twostep reaction involving reductive amination with ammonia followed by condensation with NBD-F. Under the optimized derivatization conditions all carbo-hydrates were successfully derivatized within 2.5 h and separated within 15 min using borate buffer (90 mmol/L, pH 9.2). For sugar standards LODs were in the range of 49.7 to 243.6 nmol/L. Migration time and peak area reproducibility were better than RSD 0.1 and 3%, respectively. The method was applied to measure sugars in nanoliter volume samples of phloem sap obtained by stylectomy from wheat and to honeydew samples obtained from aphids feeding from wheat and willow

    Reconciling structure and agency in strategy -as-practice research: Towards a strong- structuration theory approach

    An overwhelming focus of research on the micro agency of strategic actors has led to the literature being characterized as demonstrating a micro-myopia, resulting in a micro-isolationism. This means we know little about how the micro interrelates with the macro in strategy work. We address this problem in our conceptual article which adopts a structurationist stance to explicate how strategy-as-practice (SaP) research could be enhanced and extended by paying equal attention to both agency and structure. Specifically, we advance strong structuration theory (SST), a promising development from Giddens’ seminal work on structuration theory, to show how strategic activity can be understood as an ongoing process of structuration unfolding over time. We argue for the use of both types of methodological bracketing (context and conduct analysis), advocating systematic attention to the interplay between macro-societal and micro-local levels of analysis. Our discussion concludes with guidance for researchers inviting them to undertake empirical fieldwork that overcomes SaP’s current micro-myopia, creating a more balanced corpus of work

    Circulating virus load determines the size of bottlenecks in viral populations progressing within a host

    For any organism, population size, and fluctuations thereof, are of primary importance in determining the forces driving its evolution. This is particularly true for viruses—rapidly evolving entities that form populations with transient and explosive expansions alternating with phases of migration, resulting in strong population bottlenecks and associated founder effects that increase genetic drift. A typical illustration of this pattern is the progression of viral disease within a eukaryotic host, where such demographic fluctuations are a key factor in the emergence of new variants with altered virulence. Viruses initiate replication in one or only a few infection foci, then move through the vasculature to seed secondary infection sites and so invade distant organs and tissues. Founder effects during this within-host colonization might depend on the concentration of infectious units accumulating and circulating in the vasculature, as this represents the infection dose reaching new organs or “territories”. Surprisingly, whether or not the easily measurable circulating (plasma) virus load directly drives the size of population bottlenecks during host colonization has not been documented in animal viruses, while in plants the virus load within the sap has never been estimated. Here, we address this important question by monitoring both the virus concentration flowing in host plant sap, and the number of viral genomes founding the population in each successive new leaf. Our results clearly indicate that the concentration of circulating viruses directly determines the size of bottlenecks, which hence controls founder effects and effective population size during disease progression within a host
