    Constructing Indonesian Social Accounting Matrix for Distributional Analysis in the CGE Modelling Framework

    The distributional impact of policies analyzed in the CGE modelling framework have been constrained in part by the absence of a Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) with disaggregated households. Since Indonesian official SAM does not distinguish households by income or expenditure size, it has prevented accurate assesment for the distributional impact, such as calculation of inequality or poverty incidence. This paper describes how the Indonesian SAM for the year 2003, with 181 industries, 181 commodities, and 200 households (100 urban and 100 rural households grouped by expenditure per capita centiles) was constructed. The SAM (with the size of 768x768 accounts) constitutes the the most disaggregated SAM for Indonesia at both the sectoral and household level. SAM Construction is an essential part of CGE modeling, and this documentation provides greater transparency as well as replicability for further improvement.Social Accounting Matrix; Computable General Equilibrium; Indonesia

    Severe malnutrition in children presenting to health facilities in an urban slum in Bangladesh

    SETTING: An urban slum in Kamrangirchar, Bangladesh. OBJECTIVES: Among children aged 6–59 months seeking medical care from the two Médecins Sans Frontières-supported primary health centres, to determine 1) the prevalence of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and severe chronic malnutrition (SCM), and 2) the extent of overlap between SAM and SCM. DESIGN: In a retrospective record review, data were analysed from out-patient registers on age, sex, height, weight and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of children attending for medical care from April to September 2011. SAM was defined as weight for height < −3 Z scores of the median and/or MUAC <115 mm. SCM was defined as height for age < −3 Z scores of the median. World Health Organization growth standards were used as reference. RESULTS: Data were complete in the records of 7318 (98%) children, of whom 322 (4%) had SAM and 1698 (23%) had SCM. Among the 322 children with SAM, 162 (50%) also had SCM. CONCLUSION: In an urban Bangladesh slum, SAM and SCM co-exist, with a predominance of SCM. The current national guidelines for severe malnutrition, which focus on identification and management only for SAM, urgently need to be expanded to include SCM if substantial childhood morbidity and mortality are to be reduced

    SAMplus: adaptive optics at optical wavelengths for SOAR

    Adaptive Optics (AO) is an innovative technique that substantially improves the optical performance of ground-based telescopes. The SOAR Adaptive Module (SAM) is a laser-assisted AO instrument, designed to compensate ground-layer atmospheric turbulence in near-IR and visible wavelengths over a large Field of View. Here we detail our proposal to upgrade SAM, dubbed SAMplus, that is focused on enhancing its performance in visible wavelengths and increasing the instrument reliability. As an illustration, for a seeing of 0.62 arcsec at 500 nm and a typical turbulence profile, current SAM improves the PSF FWHM to 0.40 arcsec, and with the upgrade we expect to deliver images with a FWHM of 0.34\approx0.34 arcsec -- up to 0.23 arcsec FWHM PSF under good seeing conditions. Such capabilities will be fully integrated with the latest SAM instruments, putting SOAR in an unique position as observatory facility.Comment: To appear in Proc.     Trajectory-Based Unveiling of Angular Momentum of Photons

    The Heisenberg uncertainty principle suggests that it is impossible to determine the trajectory of a quantum particle in the same way as a classical particle. However, we may still yield insight into novel behavior of photons based on the average photon trajectories (APTs). Here we explore the APTs of photons carrying spin angular momentum (SAM) and/or orbital angular momentum (OAM) under the paraxial condition. We define the helicity and differential helicity for unveiling the three-dimensional spiral structures of the APTs of photons. We clarify the novel behaviors of the APTs caused by the SAM and OAM as well as the SAM-OAM coupling. The APT concept is very helpful for profoundly understanding the motion of trapped particles and for elucidating other physical systems. Due to the presence of the helical path caused by the SAM and/or the OAM, the actual traveling distance of the photons might be much longer than the geometric distance

This study used purposive sampling technique sampling. Hypothesis testing using multiple regression analysis using SPSS ver. 17.0.     Conformations and charge transport characteristics of biphenyldithiol self-assembled-monolayer molecular electronic devices: A multiscale computational study

    We report a computational study of conformations and charge transport characteristics of biphenyldithiol (BPDT) monolayers in the (sqrt(3)×sqrt(3))R30° packing ratio sandwiched between Au(111) electrodes. From force-field molecular-dynamics and annealing simulations of BPDT self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with up to 100 molecules on a Au(111) substrate, we identify an energetically favorable herringbone-type SAM packing configuration and a less-stable parallel packing configuration. Both SAMs are described by the (2sqrt(3)×sqrt(3))R30° unit cell including two molecules. With subsequent density-functional theory calculations of one unit cell of the (i) herringbone SAM with the molecular tilt angle theta[approximate]15°, (ii) herringbone SAM with theta[approximate]30°, and (iii) parallel SAM with theta[approximate]30°, we confirm that the herringbone packing configuration is more stable than the parallel one but find that the energy variation with respect to the molecule tilting within the herringbone packing is very small. Next, by capping these SAMs with the top Au(111) electrode, we prepare three molecular electronic device models and calculate their coherent charge transport properties within the matrix Green's function approach. Current–voltage (I–V) curves are then obtained via the Landauer–Büttiker formula. We find that at low-bias voltages (|V|~0.5 V), the I–V characteristics of the three models show noticeable differences due to different phenyl band structures. We thus conclude that the BPDT SAM I–V characteristics in the low-bias voltage region are mainly determined by the Si–Au interaction within the individual molecule-electrode contact, while both intramolecular conformation and intermolecular interaction can affect the BPDT SAM I–V characteristics in the high-bias voltage region
