    Combining goal-oriented and model-driven approaches to solve the Payment Problem Scenario

    Motivated by the objective to provide an improved participation of business domain experts in the design of service-oriented integration solutions, we extend our previous work on using the COSMO methodology for service mediation by introducing a goal-oriented approach to requirements engineering. With this approach, business requirements including the motivations behind the mediation solution are better understood, specified, and aligned with their technical implementations.     The role of ontology in information management

    The question posed in this thesis is how the use of ontologies by information systems affects their development and their performance. Several aspects about ontologies are presented, namely design and implementation issues, representational languages, and tools for ontology manipulation. The effects of the combination of ontologies and information systems are then investigated. An ontology-based tool to identify email message features is presented, and its implementation and execution details are discussed. The use of ontologies by information systems provides a better understanding about their requirements, reduces their development time, and supports knowledge management during execution time

    A Modular Logic Approach for Expressing Web Services in XML Applying Dynamic Rules in XML

    RuleML is considered to be a markup language for the semantic web. It allows the enrichment of web ontologies by adding definitions of derived concepts and it enhances interoperability among different systems and tools by publishing rules in an XML format. Moreover the in-creasing demand for interfaces that enhance information sharing has given rise to XML doc-uments that include embedded calls to web services. In this paper we propose a variation of RuleML that is based on modular logic programming. Our approach is based in a two level architecture. In the first level a modular logic language, called M-log, is presented. This lan-guage encompasses several mechanisms for invoking web services. In the second level we ex-ploit the semantics of M-log to present a variation of RuleML with rich modeling capabilities.     Scientific Models: A User-oriented Approach to the Integration of Scientific Data and Digital Libraries

    Many scientific communities are struggling with the challenge of how to manage the terabytes of data they are producing, often on a daily basis. Scientific models are the primary method for representing and encapsulating expert knowledge in many disciplines. Scientific models could also provide a mechanism: for publishing and sharing scientific results; for teaching complex scientific concepts; and for the selective archival, curation and preservation of scientific data. As such, they also provide a bridge for collaboration between Digital Libraries and eScience. In this paper I describe research being undertaken within the FUSION project at the University of Queensland to enable scientists to construct, publish and manage scientific model packages that encapsulate and relate the raw data to its associated contextual and provenance metadata, processing steps, derived information and publications. This work involves extending tools and services that have come out of the Digital Libraries domain to support e-Science requirements

    A commentary on standardization in the Semantic Web, Common Logic and MultiAgent Systems

    Given the ubiquity of the Web, the Semantic Web (SW) offers MultiAgent Systems (MAS) a most wide-ranging platform by which they could intercommunicate. It can be argued however that MAS require levels of logic that the current Semantic Web has yet to provide. As ISO Common Logic (CL) ISO/IEC IS 24707:2007 provides a firstorder logic capability for MAS in an interoperable way, it seems natural to investigate how CL may itself integrate with the SW thus providing a more expressive means by which MAS can interoperate effectively across the SW. A commentary is accordingly presented on how this may be achieved. Whilst it notes that certain limitations remain to be addressed, the commentary proposes that standardising the SW with CL provides the vehicle by which MAS can achieve their potential.</p
