    Sentiment Analysis for Troll Activity Detection on Sina Weibo

    The impact of social media on the modern world is difficult to overstate. Virtually all companies and public figures have social media accounts on popular platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. In China, the micro-blogging service provider Sina Weibo is the most popular such service. To overcome negative publicity, Weibo trolls the so called Water Army can be hired to post deceptive comments. In recent years, troll detection and sentiment analysis have been studied, but we are not aware of any research that considers troll detection based on sentiment analysis. In this research, we focus on troll detection via sentiment analysis with other user activity data gathered on the Sina Weibo platform, where the content is mainly in Chinese. We implement techniques for Chinese sentence segmentation, word embeddings, and sentiment score calculations. We employ the resulting techniques to develop and test a sentiment analysis approach for troll detection, based on a variety of machine learning strategies. Experimental results are generated, analyzed and the troll detection model we proposed achieved 89% accuracy for the dataset presented in this research. A Chrome extension is presented that implements our proposed technique, which enables real-time troll detection and troll comments filtering when a user browses Sina Weibo tweets and comments

    Fine-grained Emotion Role Detection Based on Retweet Information

    User behaviors in online social networks convey not only literal information but also one’s emotion attitudes towards the information. To compute this attitude, we define the concept of emotion role as the concentrated reflection of a user’s online emotional characteristics. Emotion role detection aims to better understand the structure and sentiments of online social networks and support further analysis, e.g., revealing public opinions, providing personalized recommendations, and detecting influential users. In this paper, we first introduce the definition of a fine-grained emotion role, which consists of two dimensions: emotion orientation (i.e., positive, negative, and neutral) and emotion influence (i.e., leader and follower). We then propose a Multi-dimensional Emotion Role Mining model, named as MERM, to determine a user’s emotion role in online social networks. Specifically, we tend to identify emotion roles by combining a set of features that reflect a user’s online emotional status, including degree of emotional characteristics, accumulated emotion preference, structural factor, temporal factor and emotion change factor. Experiment results on a real-life micro-blog reposting dataset show that the classification accuracy of the proposed model can achieve up to 90.1%

    A Model to Measure the Spread Power of Rumors

    Nowadays, a significant portion of daily interacted posts in social media are infected by rumors. This study investigates the problem of rumor analysis in different areas from other researches. It tackles the unaddressed problem related to calculating the Spread Power of Rumor (SPR) for the first time and seeks to examine the spread power as the function of multi-contextual features. For this purpose, the theory of Allport and Postman will be adopted. In which it claims that there are two key factors determinant to the spread power of rumors, namely importance and ambiguity. The proposed Rumor Spread Power Measurement Model (RSPMM) computes SPR by utilizing a textual-based approach, which entails contextual features to compute the spread power of the rumors in two categories: False Rumor (FR) and True Rumor (TR). Totally 51 contextual features are introduced to measure SPR and their impact on classification are investigated, then 42 features in two categories "importance" (28 features) and "ambiguity" (14 features) are selected to compute SPR. The proposed RSPMM is verified on two labelled datasets, which are collected from Twitter and Telegram. The results show that (i) the proposed new features are effective and efficient to discriminate between FRs and TRs. (ii) the proposed RSPMM approach focused only on contextual features while existing techniques are based on Structure and Content features, but RSPMM achieves considerably outstanding results (F-measure=83%). (iii) The result of T-Test shows that SPR criteria can significantly distinguish between FR and TR, besides it can be useful as a new method to verify the trueness of rumors

    Assessing the social impacts of extreme weather events using social media

    The frequency and severity of extreme weather events such as flooding, hurricanes/storms and heatwaves are increasing as a result of climate change. There is a need for information to better understand when, where and how these events are impacting people. However, there are currently limited sources of impact information beyond traditional meteorological observations. Social sensing, which is the use of unsolicited social media data to better understand real world events, is one method that may provide such information. Social sensing has successfully been used to detect earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, wildfires, heatwaves and other weather hazards. Here social sensing methods are adapted to explore potential for collecting impact information for meteorologists and decision makers concerned with extreme weather events. After a review of the literature, three experimental studies are presented. Social sensing is shown to be effective for detection of impacts of named storms in the UK and Ireland. Topics of discussion and sentiment are explored in the period before, during and after a storm event. Social sensing is also shown able to detect high-impact rainfall events worldwide, validating results against a manually curated database. Additional events which were not known to this database were found by social sensing. Finally, social sensing was applied to heatwaves in three European cities. Building on previous work on heatwaves in the UK, USA and Australia, the methods were extended to include impact phrases alongside hazard-related phrases, in three different languages (English, Dutch and Greek). Overall, social sensing is found to be a good source of impact information for organisations that need to better understand the impacts of extreme weather.     Sentiment Analysis for Fake News Detection

    [Abstract] In recent years, we have witnessed a rise in fake news, i.e., provably false pieces of information created with the intention of deception. The dissemination of this type of news poses a serious threat to cohesion and social well-being, since it fosters political polarization and the distrust of people with respect to their leaders. The huge amount of news that is disseminated through social media makes manual verification unfeasible, which has promoted the design and implementation of automatic systems for fake news detection. The creators of fake news use various stylistic tricks to promote the success of their creations, with one of them being to excite the sentiments of the recipients. This has led to sentiment analysis, the part of text analytics in charge of determining the polarity and strength of sentiments expressed in a text, to be used in fake news detection approaches, either as a basis of the system or as a complementary element.     Effectiveness of Corporate Social Media Activities to Increase Relational Outcomes

    This study applies social media analytics to investigate the impact of different corporate social media activities on user word of mouth and attitudinal loyalty. We conduct a multilevel analysis of approximately 5 million tweets regarding the main Twitter accounts of 28 large global companies. We empirically identify different social media activities in terms of social media management strategies (using social media management tools or the web-frontend client), account types (broadcasting or receiving information), and communicative approaches (conversational or disseminative). We find positive effects of social media management tools, broadcasting accounts, and conversational communication on public perception
