Entrepreneurship and Role Models
In the media role models are increasingly being acknowledged as an influential factor in explaining the reasons for the choice of occupation and career. Various conceptual studies have proposed links between role models and entrepreneurial intentions. However, empirical research aimed at establishing the importance of role models for (nascent) entrepreneurs is scarce. Knowledge of the presence of entrepreneurial role models, their specific functions and characteristics is therefore limited. Our explorative empirical study is a first step towards filling this gap. Our study is based on the outcomes of a questionnaire completed by a representative sample of 292 entrepreneurs in three major Dutch cities - entrepreneurs who have recently started up a business in the retail, hotel and restaurant sectors, business services and other services. We provide indications of the presence and importance of entrepreneurial role models, the function of these role models, the similarity between the entrepreneur and the role model, and the strength of their relationship.
Analyzing temporal role based access control models
Today, Role Based Access Control (RBAC) is the de facto model used for advanced access control, and is widely deployed in diverse enterprises of all sizes. Several extensions to the authorization as well as the administrative models for RBAC have been adopted in recent years. In this paper, we consider the temporal extension of RBAC (TRBAC), and develop safety analysis techniques for it. Safety analysis is essential for understanding the implications of security policies both at the stage of specification and modification. Towards this end, in this paper, we first define an administrative model for TRBAC. Our strategy for performing safety analysis is to appropriately decompose the TRBAC analysis problem into multiple subproblems similar to RBAC. Along with making the analysis simpler, this enables us to leverage and adapt existing analysis techniques developed for traditional RBAC. We have adapted and experimented with employing two state of the art analysis approaches developed for RBAC as well as tools developed for software testing. Our results show that our approach is both feasible and flexible
Galaxy chemical evolution models: The role of molecular gas formation
In our classical grid of multiphase chemical evolution models, star formation in the disc occurs in two steps: first, molecular gas forms, and then stars are created by cloud-cloud collisions or interactions of massive stars with the surrounding molecular clouds. The formation of both molecular clouds and stars are treated through the use of free parameters we refer to as efficiencies. In this work, we modify the formation of molecular clouds based on several new prescriptions existing in the literature, and we compare the results obtained for a chemical evolution model of theMilkyWay Galaxy regarding the evolution of the Solar region, the radial structure of the Galactic disc and the ratio between the diffuse and molecular components, H I /H 2 . Our results show that the six prescriptions we have tested reproduce fairly consistent most of the observed trends, differing mostly in their predictions for the (poorly constrained) outskirts of the Milky Way and the evolution in time of its radial structure. Among them, the model proposed by Ascasibar et al. (in preparation), where the conversion of diffuse gas into molecular clouds depends on the local stellar and gas densities as well as on the gas metallicity, seems to provide the best overall match to the observed data
Role models for complex networks
We present a framework for automatically decomposing ("block-modeling") the
functional classes of agents within a complex network. These classes are
represented by the nodes of an image graph ("block model") depicting the main
patterns of connectivity and thus functional roles in the network. Using a
first principles approach, we derive a measure for the fit of a network to any
given image graph allowing objective hypothesis testing. From the properties of
an optimal fit, we derive how to find the best fitting image graph directly
from the network and present a criterion to avoid overfitting. The method can
handle both two-mode and one-mode data, directed and undirected as well as
weighted networks and allows for different types of links to be dealt with
simultaneously. It is non-parametric and computationally efficient. The
concepts of structural equivalence and modularity are found as special cases of
our approach. We apply our method to the world trade network and analyze the
roles individual countries play in the global economy
Role of conviction in nonequilibrium models of opinion formation
We analyze the critical behavior of a class of discrete opinion models in the
presence of disorder. Within this class, each agent opinion takes a discrete
value ( or 0) and its time evolution is ruled by two terms, one
representing agent-agent interactions and the other the degree of conviction or
persuasion (a self-interaction). The mean-field limit, where each agent can
interact evenly with any other, is considered. Disorder is introduced in the
strength of both interactions, with either quenched or annealed random
variables. With probability (1-), a pairwise interaction reflects a
negative (positive) coupling, while the degree of conviction also follows a
binary probability distribution (two different discrete probability
distributions are considered). Numerical simulations show that a
non-equilibrium continuous phase transition, from a disordered state to a state
with a prevailing opinion, occurs at a critical point that depends on
the distribution of the convictions, the transition being spoiled in some
cases. We also show how the critical line, for each model, is affected by the
update scheme (either parallel or sequential) as well as by the kind of

The role of initial geometry in experimental models of wound closing
Wound healing assays are commonly used to study how populations of cells,
initialised on a two-dimensional surface, act to close an artificial wound
space. While real wounds have different shapes, standard wound healing assays
often deal with just one simple wound shape, and it is unclear whether varying
the wound shape might impact how we interpret results from these experiments.
In this work, we describe a new kind of wound healing assay, called a sticker
assay, that allows us to examine the role of wound shape in a series of wound
healing assays performed with fibroblast cells. In particular, we show how to
use the sticker assay to examine wound healing with square, circular and
triangular shaped wounds. We take a standard approach and report measurements
of the size of the wound as a function of time. This shows that the rate of
wound closure depends on the initial wound shape. This result is interesting
because the only aspect of the assay that we change is the initial wound shape,
and the reason for the different rate of wound closure is unclear. To provide
more insight into the experimental observations we describe our results
quantitatively by calibrating a mathematical model, describing the relevant
transport phenomena, to match our experimental data. Overall, our results
suggest that the rates of cell motility and cell proliferation from different
initial wound shapes are approximately the same, implying that the differences
we observe in the wound closure rate are consistent with a fairly typical
mathematical model of wound healing. Our results imply that parameter estimates
obtained from an experiment performed with one particular wound shape could be
used to describe an experiment performed with a different shape. This
fundamental result is important because this assumption is often invoked, but
never tested
Strategic I/O Psychology and the Role of Utility Analysis Models
In the 1990’s, the significance of human capital in organizations has been increasing,and measurement issues in human resource management have achieved significant prominence. Yet, I/O psychology research on utility analysis and measurement has actually declined. In this chapter we propose a decision-based framework to review developments in utility analysis research since 1991, and show that through lens of this framework there are many fertile avenues for research. We then show that both I/O psychology and strategic HRM research and practice can be enhanced by greater collaboration and integration, particularly regarding the link between human capital and organizational success. We present an integrative framework as the basis for that integration, and illustrate its implications for future research
Some Concerns Regarding Explanatory Pluralism: The Explanatory Role of Optimality Models
Optimality models are widely used in different parts of biology. Two important questions that have been asked about such models are: are they explanatory and, if so, what type of explanations do they offer? My concern in this paper is with the approach of Rice (2012, 2015) and Irvine (2015), who claim that these models provide non-causal explanations. I argue that there are serious problems with this approach and with the accounts of explanation it is intended to justify. The idea behind this undertaking is to draw attention to an important issue associated with the recent pluralist stance on explanation: the rampant proliferation of theories of explanation. This proliferation supports a pluralist perspective on explanation, and pluralism encourages such a proliferation. But, if we are not careful about how we arrive at and how we justify new accounts of explanation — i.e., if we do not try to avoid the sort of problems discussed in this paper — we may end up trivializing the concept of explanation
