Robust Non-Rigid Registration with Reweighted Position and Transformation Sparsity
Non-rigid registration is challenging because it is ill-posed with high
degrees of freedom and is thus sensitive to noise and outliers. We propose a
robust non-rigid registration method using reweighted sparsities on position
and transformation to estimate the deformations between 3-D shapes. We
formulate the energy function with position and transformation sparsity on both
the data term and the smoothness term, and define the smoothness constraint
using local rigidity. The double sparsity based non-rigid registration model is
enhanced with a reweighting scheme, and solved by transferring the model into
four alternately-optimized subproblems which have exact solutions and
guaranteed convergence. Experimental results on both public datasets and real
scanned datasets show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods
and is more robust to noise and outliers than conventional non-rigid

Computing a Uniform Scaling Parameter for 3D Registration of Lung Surfaces
A difficulty in lung image registration is accounting for changes in the size of the lungs due to inspiration. We propose two methods for computing a uniform scale parameter for use in lung image registration that account for size change. A scaled rigid-body transformation allows analysis of corresponding lung CT scans taken at different times and can serve as a good low-order transformation to initialize non-rigid registration approaches. Two different features are used to compute the scale parameter. The first method uses lung surfaces. The second uses lung volumes. Both approaches are computationally inexpensive and improve the alignment of lung images over rigid registration. The two methods produce different scale parameters and may highlight different functional information about the lungs
Robust point correspondence applied to two and three-dimensional image registration
Accurate and robust correspondence calculations are very important in many medical and biological applications. Often, the correspondence calculation forms part of a rigid registration algorithm, but accurate correspondences are especially important for elastic registration algorithms and for quantifying changes over time. In this paper, a new correspondence calculation algorithm, CSM (correspondence by sensitivity to movement), is described. A robust corresponding point is calculated by determining the sensitivity of a correspondence to movement of the point being matched. If the correspondence is reliable, a perturbation in the position of this point should not result in a large movement of the correspondence. A measure of reliability is also calculated. This correspondence calculation method is independent of the registration transformation and has been incorporated into both a 2D elastic registration algorithm for warping serial sections and a 3D rigid registration algorithm for registering pre and postoperative facial range scans. These applications use different methods for calculating the registration transformation and accurate rigid and elastic alignment of images has been achieved with the CSM method. It is expected that this method will be applicable to many different applications and that good results would be achieved if it were to be inserted into other methods for calculating a registration transformation from correspondence
Automated multimodal volume registration based on supervised 3D anatomical landmark detection
We propose a new method for automatic 3D multimodal registration based on anatomical landmark detection. Landmark detectors are learned independantly in the two imaging modalities using Extremely Randomized Trees and multi-resolution voxel windows. A least-squares fitting algorithm is then used for rigid registration based on the landmark positions as predicted by these detectors in the two imaging modalities. Experiments are carried out with this method on a dataset of pelvis CT and CBCT scans related to 45 patients. On this dataset, our fully automatic approach yields results very competitive with respect to a manually assisted state-of-the-art rigid registration algorithm
Estimation of vector fields in unconstrained and inequality constrained variational problems for segmentation and registration
Vector fields arise in many problems of computer vision, particularly in non-rigid registration. In this paper, we develop coupled partial differential equations (PDEs) to estimate vector fields that define the deformation between
objects, and the contour or surface that defines the segmentation of the objects as well.We also explore the utility of inequality constraints applied to variational problems in vision such as estimation of deformation fields in non-rigid registration and tracking. To solve inequality constrained vector
field estimation problems, we apply tools from the Kuhn-Tucker theorem in optimization theory. Our technique differs from recently popular joint segmentation and registration algorithms, particularly in its coupled set of PDEs derived from the same set of energy terms for registration and
segmentation. We present both the theory and results that demonstrate our approach
Optimized imaging using non-rigid registration
The extraordinary improvements of modern imaging devices offer access to data
with unprecedented information content. However, widely used image processing
methodologies fall far short of exploiting the full breadth of information
offered by numerous types of scanning probe, optical, and electron
microscopies. In many applications, it is necessary to keep measurement
intensities below a desired threshold. We propose a methodology for extracting
an increased level of information by processing a series of data sets
suffering, in particular, from high degree of spatial uncertainty caused by
complex multiscale motion during the acquisition process. An important role is
played by a nonrigid pixel-wise registration method that can cope with low
signal-to-noise ratios. This is accompanied by formulating objective quality
measures which replace human intervention and visual inspection in the
processing chain. Scanning transmission electron microscopy of siliceous
zeolite material exhibits the above-mentioned obstructions and therefore serves
as orientation and a test of our procedures
