Parameter mismatches,variable delay times and synchronization in time-delayed systems
We investigate synchronization between two unidirectionally linearly coupled
chaotic non-identical time-delayed systems and show that parameter mismatches
are of crucial importance to achieve synchronization. We establish that
independent of the relation between the delay time in the coupled systems and
the coupling delay time, only retarded synchronization with the coupling delay
time is obtained. We show that with parameter mismatch or without it neither
complete nor anticipating synchronization occurs. We derive existence and
stability conditions for the retarded synchronization manifold. We demonstrate
our approach using examples of the Ikeda and Mackey-Glass models. Also for the
first time we investigate chaos synchronization in time-delayed systems with
variable delay time and find both existence and sufficient stability conditions
for the retarded synchronization manifold with the coupling delay lag time.
Also for the first time we consider synchronization between two
unidirectionally coupled chaotic multi-feedback Ikeda systems and derive
existence and stability conditions for the different anticipating, lag, and
complete synchronization regimes.Comment: 12 page
Mutual optical injection in coupled DBR laser pairs
We report an experimental study of nonlinear effects, characteristic of mutual optical coupling, in an ultra-short coupling regime observed in a distributed Bragg reflector laser pair fabricated on the same chip. Optical feedback is amplified via a double pass through a common onchip optical amplifier, which introduces further nonlinear phenomena. Optical coupling has been introduced via back reflection from a cleaveended fibre. The coupling may be varied in strength by varying the distance of the fibre from the output of the chip, without significantly affecting the coupling time. © 2008 Optical. Society of America
Towards AC-induced optimum control of dynamical localization
It is shown that optimum control of dynamical localization (quantum
suppression of classical diffusion) in the context of ultracold atoms in
periodically shaken optical lattices subjected to time-periodic forces having
equidistant zeros depends on the \textit{impulse} transmitted by the external
force over half-period rather than on the force amplitude. This result provides
a useful principle for optimally controlling dynamical localization in general
periodic systems, which is capable of experimental realization.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

Testing differences in long run growth among Spanish regions: Can growth models explain it?
During the last decade we have assisted to a renewal interest in growth. There were a great number of theoretical and empirical works since the question was reopen by the Romer (1986) article about long run properties of growth models. Growth models can be classified in two kinds: exogenous growth models and endogenous growth models. The main differences between them are that the endogenous models try to incorporate into the behavior of the agents the assumptions that the first assumes as exogenous. This difference, that sounds only methodological, has important implications. The conclusion of the exogenous models is that, in presence of free factor mobility and free diffusion of technology, countries and regions will converge to the same rate of growth, and, in absence of technical progress, they will converge to the same level of per capita income, without any influence of initial conditions or political intervention in the economy (This result is obtained by Barro(1991) and Barro y Sala(1992)). With endogenous models the economies will growth at a rate determined by the behavior of the agents in the economy and could be the same or different among different economies. The theoretical result of these models is that in the long run could exist convergence or divergence. The main focus of this paper is, using the data for Spanish Regions from 1955 to 1991 and applying unit root time series methodology, to determine long run growth rates for each region with the aim of knowing if we can choose between the two kind of growth models.
HMMER cut-off threshold tool (HMMERCTTER): Supervised classification of superfamily protein sequences with a reliable cut-off threshold
Background: Protein superfamilies can be divided into subfamilies of proteins with different functional characteristics. Their sequences can be classified hierarchically, which is part of sequence function assignation. Typically, there are no clear subfamily hallmarks that would allow pattern-based function assignation by which this task is mostly achieved based on the similarity principle. This is hampered by the lack of a score cut-off that is both sensitive and specific. Results: HMMER Cut-off Threshold Tool (HMMERCTTER) adds a reliable cut-off threshold to the popular HMMER. Using a high quality superfamily phylogeny, it clusters a set of training sequences such that the cluster-specific HMMER profiles show cluster or subfamily member detection with 100% precision and recall (P&R), thereby generating a specific threshold as inclusion cut-off. Profiles and thresholds are then used as classifiers to screen a target dataset. Iterative inclusion of novel sequences to groups and the corresponding HMMER profiles results in high sensitivity while specificity is maintained by imposing 100% P&R self detection. In three presented case studies of protein superfamilies, classification of large datasets with 100% precision was achieved with over 95% recall. Limits and caveats are presented and explained. Conclusions: HMMERCTTER is a promising protein superfamily sequence classifier provided high quality training datasets are used. It provides a decision support system that aids in the difficult task of sequence function assignation in the twilight zone of sequence similarity.
