An investigation into the cloud manufacturing based approach towards global high value manufacturing for smes

    Get PDF
Considering the high labour costs and intensive competitions in the global market, improving the effective deployment of innovative design and manufacturing and utilisation of all existing technical information, for the full life cycle of the product, is essential and much needed for manufacturing Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) in particular. Cloud Manufacturing , as a powerful tool supported with ‘big data’, will likely enable SMEs to move towards using dynamic scalability and ‘free’ available data resources in a virtual manner and to provide solution-based, value-added, digital-driven manufacturing service over the Internet. The research presented in this paper aims to develop a cloud manufacturing based approach towards value-added, knowledge/solution driven manufacturing for SMEs, where there are many constraints in engaging responsive high value manufacturing. The paper will present the framework, architecture and key moderator technologies for implementing cloud manufacturing and the associated application perspectives. The paper concludes with further discussion on the potential and application of the approach

Modelling of cross organizational manufacturing resource service chain based on service supply-demand dynamic matching network

In the cloud manufacturing systems, both manufacturing tasks and manufacturing services are in a dynamic environment. How could cloud manufacturing platform optimizes manufacturing cloud services based on QoS, matching an optimal service composition for manufacturing tasks has become an urgent problem at present. In view of this problem, we study the matching of manufacturing tasks and manufacturing services from the perspective of complex network theory. On the basis of manufacturing task network and manufacturing service network, a dynamic matching network theory model of manufacturing task-service is constructed. And then, we take a dynamic assessment of QoS. Finally, we use load and dynamic QoS as the optimization objectivities, transform the optimal manufacturing service composition problem into the shortest path problem, and the dynamic scheduling of manufacturing services is realized

Multitask Oriented Virtual Resource Integration and Optimal Scheduling in Cloud Manufacturing

To deal with the problem of resource integration and optimal scheduling in cloud manufacturing, based on the analyzation of the existing literatures, multitask oriented virtual resource integration and optimal scheduling problem is presented from the perspective of global optimization based on the consideration of sharing and correlation among virtual resources. The correlation models of virtual resources in a task and among tasks are established. According to the correlation model and characteristics of resource sharing, the formulation in which resource time-sharing scheduling strategy is employed is put forward, and then the formulation is simplified to solve the problem easily. The genetic algorithm based on the real number matrix encoding is proposed. And crossover and mutation operation rules are designed for the real number matrix. Meanwhile, the evaluation function with the punishment mechanism and the selection strategy with pressure factor are adopted so as to approach the optimal solution more quickly. The experimental results show that the proposed model and method are feasible and effective both in situation of enough resources and limited resources in case of a large number of tasks

A Production Planning Model for Make-to-Order Foundry Flow Shop with Capacity Constraint

The mode of production in the modern manufacturing enterprise mainly prefers to MTO (Make-to-Order); how to reasonably arrange the production plan has become a very common and urgent problem for enterprises’ managers to improve inner production reformation in the competitive market environment. In this paper, a mathematical model of production planning is proposed to maximize the profit with capacity constraint. Four kinds of cost factors (material cost, process cost, delay cost, and facility occupy cost) are considered in the proposed model. Different factors not only result in different profit but also result in different satisfaction degrees of customers. Particularly, the delay cost and facility occupy cost cannot reach the minimum at the same time; the two objectives are interactional. This paper presents a mathematical model based on the actual production process of a foundry flow shop. An improved genetic algorithm (IGA) is proposed to solve the biobjective problem of the model. Also, the gene encoding and decoding, the definition of fitness function, and genetic operators have been illustrated. In addition, the proposed algorithm is used to solve the production planning problem of a foundry flow shop in a casting enterprise. And comparisons with other recently published algorithms show the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm

A New Manufacturing Service Selection and Composition Method Using Improved Flower Pollination Algorithm

With an increasing number of manufacturing services, the means by which to select and compose these manufacturing services have become a challenging problem. It can be regarded as a multiobjective optimization problem that involves a variety of conflicting quality of service (QoS) attributes. In this study, a multiobjective optimization model of manufacturing service composition is presented that is based on QoS and an environmental index. Next, the skyline operator is applied to reduce the solution space. And then a new method called improved Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) is proposed for solving the problem of manufacturing service selection and composition. The improved FPA enhances the performance of basic FPA by combining the latter with crossover and mutation operators of the Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm. Finally, a case study is conducted to compare the proposed method with other evolutionary algorithms, including the Genetic Algorithm, DE, basic FPA, and extended FPA. The experimental results reveal that the proposed method performs best at solving the problem of manufacturing service selection and composition

Advances in Manufacturing Technology XXVII: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Manufacturing Research (ICMR2013)

ICMR2013 was organised by Cranfield University on the 19-20 September 2013. The conference focuses on any aspects of product development, manufacturing technology, manufacturing systems, information systems and digital technologies. It provides an excellent avenue for researchers to present state-of-the-art multidisciplinary manufacturing research and exchange ideas. In addition to the four keynote speeches from Airbus and Rolls-Royce and three invited presentations, there are 108 papers in these proceedings. These papers are split into 24 technical sessions. The International Conference on Manufacturing Research is a major event for academics and industrialists engaged in manufacturing research. Held annually in the UK since the late 1970s, the conference is renowned as a friendly and inclusive environment that brings together a broad community of researchers who share a common goal; developing and managing the technologies and operations that are key to sustaining the success of manufacturing businesses. For over two decades, ICMR has been the main manufacturing research conference organised in the UK, successfully bringing researchers, academics and industrialists together to share their knowledge and experiences. Initiated a National Conference by the Consortium of UK University Manufacturing Engineering Heads (COMEH), it became an International Conference in 2003. COMEH is an independent body established in 1978. Its main aim is to promote manufacturing engineering education, training and research. To achieve this, the Consortium maintains a close liaison with government bodies concerned with the training and continuing development of professional engineers, while responding to the appropriate consultative and discussion documents and other initiatives. COMEH is represented on the Engineering Professor’s council (EPC) and it organises and supports national manufacturing engineering education research conferences and symposia
