Decentralized Fair Scheduling in Two-Hop Relay-Assisted Cognitive OFDMA Systems
In this paper, we consider a two-hop relay-assisted cognitive downlink OFDMA
system (named as secondary system) dynamically accessing a spectrum licensed to
a primary network, thereby improving the efficiency of spectrum usage. A
cluster-based relay-assisted architecture is proposed for the secondary system,
where relay stations are employed for minimizing the interference to the users
in the primary network and achieving fairness for cell-edge users. Based on
this architecture, an asymptotically optimal solution is derived for jointly
controlling data rates, transmission power, and subchannel allocation to
optimize the average weighted sum goodput where the proportional fair
scheduling (PFS) is included as a special case. This solution supports
decentralized implementation, requires small communication overhead, and is
robust against imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT)
and sensing measurement. The proposed solution achieves significant throughput
gains and better user-fairness compared with the existing designs. Finally, we
derived a simple and asymptotically optimal scheduling solution as well as the
associated closed-form performance under the proportional fair scheduling for a
large number of users. The system throughput is shown to be
, where is the
number of users in one cluster, is the number of subchannels and is
the active probability of primary users.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures, IEEE JOURNAL OF SELECTED TOPICS IN SIGNAL

Beamforming Techniques for Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access in 5G Cellular Networks
In this paper, we develop various beamforming techniques for downlink
transmission for multiple-input single-output (MISO) non-orthogonal multiple
access (NOMA) systems. First, a beamforming approach with perfect channel state
information (CSI) is investigated to provide the required quality of service
(QoS) for all users. Taylor series approximation and semidefinite relaxation
(SDR) techniques are employed to reformulate the original non-convex power
minimization problem to a tractable one. Further, a fairness-based beamforming
approach is proposed through a max-min formulation to maintain fairness between
users. Next, we consider a robust scheme by incorporating channel
uncertainties, where the transmit power is minimized while satisfying the
outage probability requirement at each user. Through exploiting the SDR
approach, the original non-convex problem is reformulated in a linear matrix
inequality (LMI) form to obtain the optimal solution. Numerical results
demonstrate that the robust scheme can achieve better performance compared to
the non-robust scheme in terms of the rate satisfaction ratio. Further,
simulation results confirm that NOMA consumes a little over half transmit power
needed by OMA for the same data rate requirements. Hence, NOMA has the
potential to significantly improve the system performance in terms of transmit
power consumption in future 5G networks and beyond.Comment: accepted to publish in IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technolog
Flexible resource allocation for joint optimization of energy and spectral efficiency in OFDMA multi-cell networks
The radio resource allocation problem is studied, aiming to jointly optimize the energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) of downlink OFDMA multi-cell networks. Different from existing works on either EE or SE optimization, a novel EE-SE tradeoff (EST) metric, which can capture both the EST relation and the individual cells’ preferences for EE or SE performance, is introduced as the utility function for each base station (BS). Then the joint EE-SE optimization problem is formulated, and an iterative subchannel allocation and power allocation algorithm is proposed. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm can exploit the EST relation flexibly and optimize the EE and SE simultaneously to meet diverse EE and SE preferences of individual cells.<br/
Weighted Max-Min Resource Allocation for Frequency Selective Channels
In this paper, we discuss the computation of weighted max-min rate allocation
using joint TDM/FDM strategies under a PSD mask constraint. We show that the
weighted max-min solution allocates the rates according to a predetermined rate
ratio defined by the weights, a fact that is very valuable for
telecommunication service providers. Furthermore, we show that the problem can
be efficiently solved using linear programming. We also discuss the resource
allocation problem in the mixed services scenario where certain users have a
required rate, while the others have flexible rate requirements. The solution
is relevant to many communication systems that are limited by a power spectral
density mask constraint such as WiMax, Wi-Fi and UWB
Enhancing Physical Layer Security in AF Relay Assisted Multi-Carrier Wireless Transmission
In this paper, we study the physical layer security (PLS) problem in the dual
hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless
communication system. First, we consider a single user single relay system and
study a joint power optimization problem at the source and relay subject to
individual power constraint at the two nodes. The aim is to maximize the end to
end secrecy rate with optimal power allocation over different sub-carriers.
Later, we consider a more general multi-user multi-relay scenario. Under high
SNR approximation for end to end secrecy rate, an optimization problem is
formulated to jointly optimize power allocation at the BS, the relay selection,
sub-carrier assignment to users and the power loading at each of the relaying
node. The target is to maximize the overall security of the system subject to
independent power budget limits at each transmitting node and the OFDMA based
exclusive sub-carrier allocation constraints. A joint optimization solution is
obtained through duality theory. Dual decomposition allows to exploit convex
optimization techniques to find the power loading at the source and relay
nodes. Further, an optimization for power loading at relaying nodes along with
relay selection and sub carrier assignment for the fixed power allocation at
the BS is also studied. Lastly, a sub-optimal scheme that explores joint power
allocation at all transmitting nodes for the fixed subcarrier allocation and
relay assignment is investigated. Finally, simulation results are presented to
validate the performance of the proposed schemes.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted in Transactions on Emerging
