    Automated identification of river hydromorphological features using UAV high resolution aerial imagery

    European legislation is driving the development of methods for river ecosystem protection in light of concerns over water quality and ecology. Key to their success is the accurate and rapid characterisation of physical features (i.e., hydromorphology) along the river. Image pattern recognition techniques have been successfully used for this purpose. The reliability of the methodology depends on both the quality of the aerial imagery and the pattern recognition technique used. Recent studies have proved the potential of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to increase the quality of the imagery by capturing high resolution photography. Similarly, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have been shown to be a high precision tool for automated recognition of environmental patterns. This paper presents a UAV based framework for the identification of hydromorphological features from high resolution RGB aerial imagery using a novel classification technique based on ANNs. The framework is developed for a 1.4 km river reach along the river Dee in Wales, United Kingdom. For this purpose, a Falcon 8 octocopter was used to gather 2.5 cm resolution imagery. The results show that the accuracy of the framework is above 81%, performing particularly well at recognising vegetation. These results leverage the use of UAVs for environmental policy implementation and demonstrate the potential of ANNs and RGB imagery for high precision river monitoring and river management

    Fuzzy logic applications to expert systems and control

    A considerable amount of work on the development of fuzzy logic algorithms and application to space related control problems has been done at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) over the past few years. Particularly, guidance control systems for space vehicles during proximity operations, learning systems utilizing neural networks, control of data processing during rendezvous navigation, collision avoidance algorithms, camera tracking controllers, and tether controllers have been developed utilizing fuzzy logic technology. Several other areas in which fuzzy sets and related concepts are being considered at JSC are diagnostic systems, control of robot arms, pattern recognition, and image processing. It has become evident, based on the commercial applications of fuzzy technology in Japan and China during the last few years, that this technology should be exploited by the government as well as private industry for energy savings

    Detection and segmentation of moving objects in video using optical vector flow estimation

    The objective of this thesis is to detect and identify moving objects in a video sequence. The currently available techniques for motion estimation can be broadly categorized into two main classes: block matching methods and optical flow methods.This thesis investigates the different motion estimation algorithms used for video processing applications. Among the available motion estimation methods, the Lucas Kanade Optical Flow Algorithm has been used in this thesis for detection of moving objects in a video sequence. Derivatives of image brightness with respect to x-direction, y-direction and time t are calculated to solve the Optical Flow Constraint Equation. The algorithm produces results in the form of horizontal and vertical components of optical flow velocity, u and v respectively. This optical flow velocity is measured in the form of vectors and has been used to segment the moving objects from the video sequence. The algorithm has been applied to different sets of synthetic and real video sequences.This method has been modified to include parameters such as neighborhood size and Gaussian pyramid filtering which improve the motion estimation process. The concept of Gaussian pyramids has been used to simplify the complex video sequences and the optical flow algorithm has been applied to different levels of pyramids. The estimated motion derived from the difference in the optical flow vectors for moving objects and stationary background has been used to segment the moving objects in the video sequences. A combination of erosion and dilation techniques is then used to improve the quality of already segmented content.The Lucas Kanade Optical Flow Algorithm along with other considered parameters produces encouraging motion estimation and segmentation results. The consistency of the algorithm has been tested by the usage of different types of motion and video sequences. Other contributions of this thesis also include a comparative analysis of the optical flow algorithm with other existing motion estimation and segmentation techniques. The comparison shows that there is need to achieve a balance between accuracy and computational speed for the implementation of any motion estimation algorithm in real time for video surveillance

    Reduction of impacts of oil and gas operations through intelligent maintenance solution

    Impacts of oil and gas production operations are always very obvious when there is imbalanced operation, uncontrolled stoppage or catastrophic failure of the system during normal operations. These impacts may range from high flaring and venting of associated petroleum gas, oil release or spillage, equipment damage, fire outbreak to even fatality. Possible causes of imbalanced operations or system failure are categorised into process upset, system degradation, ineffective operation and maintenance procedures and human errors. Effective maintenance strategy integrates major components of the system; people (human factors), operation and maintenance procedures (process) and production plant (technology) to develop an intelligent maintenance solution that is capable of monitoring and detecting fault in the system at incipient stage before operational integrity is compromised. This paper deploys data-based analytics technique to develop condition-based predictive maintenance system to monitor, predict and classify performance of gas processing system. Exhaust gas temperature (EGT) of Gas Turbine Engine (GTE) is one of the operating and control parameters associated with efficiency of the GTE operation. The EGT is measured using several thermocouples, temperature sensors spaced equidistant around the circumference of the exhaust duct of the GTE. Neural network technique of multisensory data fusion is integrated with intelligent maintenance system to monitor performance of GTE, detect fault and classify performance of GTE to optimal, average and abnormal performance

    Smart environment monitoring through micro unmanned aerial vehicles

    In recent years, the improvements of small-scale Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in terms of flight time, automatic control, and remote transmission are promoting the development of a wide range of practical applications. In aerial video surveillance, the monitoring of broad areas still has many challenges due to the achievement of different tasks in real-time, including mosaicking, change detection, and object detection. In this thesis work, a small-scale UAV based vision system to maintain regular surveillance over target areas is proposed. The system works in two modes. The first mode allows to monitor an area of interest by performing several flights. During the first flight, it creates an incremental geo-referenced mosaic of an area of interest and classifies all the known elements (e.g., persons) found on the ground by an improved Faster R-CNN architecture previously trained. In subsequent reconnaissance flights, the system searches for any changes (e.g., disappearance of persons) that may occur in the mosaic by a histogram equalization and RGB-Local Binary Pattern (RGB-LBP) based algorithm. If present, the mosaic is updated. The second mode, allows to perform a real-time classification by using, again, our improved Faster R-CNN model, useful for time-critical operations. Thanks to different design features, the system works in real-time and performs mosaicking and change detection tasks at low-altitude, thus allowing the classification even of small objects. The proposed system was tested by using the whole set of challenging video sequences contained in the UAV Mosaicking and Change Detection (UMCD) dataset and other public datasets. The evaluation of the system by well-known performance metrics has shown remarkable results in terms of mosaic creation and updating, as well as in terms of change detection and object detection
