    Development of television tubes for the large space telescope

    Princeton Observatory has been working for several years under NASA sponsorship to develop television type sensors to use in place of photographic film for space astronomy. The performance of an SEC-vidicon with a 25 mm x 25 mm active area, MgF2 window, and bi-alkali photocathode is discussed. Results from ground based use on the Coude spectrograph of the 200-inch Hale telescope are included. The intended use of this tube in an echelle spectrograph sounding rocket payload and on Stratoscope 2 for direct high resolution imagery is also discussed. The paper also discusses the large space telescope image sensor requirements and the development of a larger television tube for this mission

    The PreAmplifier ShAper for the ALICE TPC-Detector

    In this paper the PreAmplifier ShAper (PASA) for the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) of the ALICE experiment at LHC is presented. The ALICE TPC PASA is an ASIC that integrates 16 identical channels, each consisting of Charge Sensitive Amplifiers (CSA) followed by a Pole-Zero network, self-adaptive bias network, two second-order bridged-T filters, two non-inverting level shifters and a start-up circuit. The circuit is optimized for a detector capacitance of 18-25 pF. For an input capacitance of 25 pF, the PASA features a conversion gain of 12.74 mV/fC, a peaking time of 160 ns, a FWHM of 190 ns, a power consumption of 11.65 mW/ch and an equivalent noise charge of 244e + 17e/pF. The circuit recovers smoothly to the baseline in about 600 ns. An integral non-linearity of 0.19% with an output swing of about 2.1 V is also achieved. The total area of the chip is 18 mm2^2 and is implemented in AMS's C35B3C1 0.35 micron CMOS technology. Detailed characterization test were performed on about 48000 PASA circuits before mounting them on the ALICE TPC front-end cards. After more than two years of operation of the ALICE TPC with p-p and Pb-Pb collisions, the PASA has demonstrated to fulfill all requirements

    Professional project report submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Journalism from the School of Journalism, University of Missouri--Columbia.The study examined how Chinese newspaper Southern Weekly has portrayed women in the past 25 years by looking into the front-page articles of six sample years with an interval of five years. The researcher used content analysis and found out how the coverage shifted during the 25 years. The gender-biased tone and language became neutral in the late-90s, and pictures showed less of women's attractive features and focused more on newsworthiness. The number of women as important figures on the front pages generally decreased from the late 80s to recent years, but women seem to lose the impression that they could only work in professions that rely largely on their appearances.Includes bibliographic references

    Trace Mineral Supplementation of Diets for Growing-Finishing Swine

    Until the past few years, most diets for growing-finishing swine contained .5% salt. However, recent research has confirmed that a level of .2 to .25% added salt will meet the dietary sodium and chlorine requirements of the growing-finishing pig fed a grain-soybean meal diet. Some producers rely on trace mineral salt to supply the needed trace minerals to the diet. A reduction in the amount of trace mineral salt added to the diet from .5 to .25% results in only half as much of each of the trace minerals supplemented to the diet. The study reported herein was designed to evaluate the performance of growing-finishing pigs fed salt containing different amounts of trace minerals at a level of .25% of the diet

    Basal metabolic rate as a proxy for overnight energy expenditure: the effect of age

    Recommendations for daily energy requirements use factorial calculations based on BMR. Expressing total energy requirements as a multiple of BMR is based on the assumption that BMR is equal to overnight metabolic rate (OMR). The objective of the present study was to determine if BMR is an appropriate proxy for OMR in children, young adults and elderly. Data are presented of thirty children (11 (SD 2) years), thirty young adults (25 (SD 5) years) and fifty-nine elderly (61 (SD 5) years). OMR was measured in a respiration chamber while sleep was not hindered and BMR was measured directly afterwards with a ventilated hood system under strictly controlled conditions. The mean ratio of OMR:BMR was 0.92 (SD 0.09) for children, which was significantly different from 1.00 (P<0.001), 1.00 (SD 0.07) for young adults and 1.06 (SD 0.09) for elderly which was also different from 1.00 (P<0.001). For adults, BMR is an appropriate measure of OMR. In children, the use of BMR to estimate OMR would introduce an overestimate and for elderly an underestimate

    AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT AND FOOD SECURITY POLICY IN ERITREA - AN ANALYSIS

    The main economic activity of the people of Eritrea is agriculture: crop production and livestock herding. Agriculture mainly comprises mixed farming and some commercial concessions. Most agriculture is rain-fed. The main rain-fed crops are sorghum, millet and sesame, and the main irrigated crops are all horticultural crops like bananas, onions and tomatoes and cotton. The major livestock production constraints are disease, water and feed shortages and agricultural expansion especially in the river frontages. The agricultural sector employs eighty percent of the working population, but its production has not managed to cover internal food demand and is forced to cover nearly 50 per cent of its annual cereal requirements through imports-commercial and food assistance. Like most African countries, Eritrea is also a victim of the problem of food insecurity. In good years the country produces only about 60 per cent of its total food needs and in poor years, it produces no more than 25 per cent. On average, once in 10 years, the country is threatened with famines. Annual crop production depends on rainfall that is variable and unevenly distributed from year to year. Therefore, the primary goal of Eritrea is to guarantee food security by introducing modern technology, irrigation, terracing, soil and water conservation, with less dependence on rainwater. Thus the Government has articulated its food policy, which stresses national ownership of grant food assistance and to achieve food security in the coming five years. The policy indeed encompasses all sectoral policies and represents the Government’s engagements with regard to food security. Despite the general trends of improvement in the economy of Eritrea, it has not yet fully recovered, and thus will still continue to require variable degrees of food assistance for the coming few more years. Based on this historical and recurrent food insecurity in Eritrea, an attempt is made in this paper to assess the agriculture development and food policy in the country.
