Guest editorial: Time-critical communication and computation for intelligent vehicular networks
Vehicular networks are expected to empower auto mated driving and intelligent transportation via vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications and edge/cloud-assisted computation, and in the meantime Cellular V2X (C-V2X) is gaining wide support from the global industrial ecosystem. The 5G NR-V2X technology is the evolution of LTE-V2X, which is expected to provide ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications (uRLLC) with 1ms latency and 99.999% reliability. Nevertheless, vehicular networks still face great challenges in supporting many emerging time-critical applications, which comprise sensing, communication and computation as closed-loops
Feasibility Study of Enabling V2X Communications by LTE-Uu Radio Interface
Compared with the legacy wireless networks, the next generation of wireless
network targets at different services with divergent QoS requirements, ranging
from bandwidth consuming video service to moderate and low date rate machine
type services, and supporting as well as strict latency requirements. One
emerging new service is to exploit wireless network to improve the efficiency
of vehicular traffic and public safety. However, the stringent packet
end-to-end (E2E) latency and ultra-low transmission failure rates pose
challenging requirements on the legacy networks. In other words, the next
generation wireless network needs to support ultra-reliable low latency
communications (URLLC) involving new key performance indicators (KPIs) rather
than the conventional metric, such as cell throughput in the legacy systems. In
this paper, a feasibility study on applying today's LTE network infrastructure
and LTE-Uu air interface to provide the URLLC type of services is performed,
where the communication takes place between two traffic participants (e.g.,
vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian). To carry out this study, an
evaluation methodology of the cellular vehicle-to-anything (V2X) communication
is proposed, where packet E2E latency and successful transmission rate are
considered as the key performance indicators (KPIs). Then, we describe the
simulation assumptions for the evaluation. Based on them, simulation results
are depicted that demonstrate the performance of the LTE network in fulfilling
new URLLC requirements. Moreover, sensitivity analysis is also conducted
regarding how to further improve system performance, in order to enable new

UAV-Empowered Disaster-Resilient Edge Architecture for Delay-Sensitive Communication
The fifth-generation (5G) communication systems will enable enhanced mobile
broadband, ultra-reliable low latency, and massive connectivity services. The
broadband and low-latency services are indispensable to public safety (PS)
communication during natural or man-made disasters. Recently, the third
generation partnership project long term evolution (3GPPLTE) has emerged as a
promising candidate to enable broadband PS communications. In this article,
first we present six major PS-LTE enabling services and the current status of
PS-LTE in 3GPP releases. Then, we discuss the spectrum bands allocated for
PS-LTE in major countries by international telecommunication union (ITU).
Finally, we propose a disaster resilient three-layered architecture for PS-LTE
(DR-PSLTE). This architecture consists of a software-defined network (SDN)
layer to provide centralized control, an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) cloudlet
layer to facilitate edge computing or to enable emergency communication link,
and a radio access layer. The proposed architecture is flexible and combines
the benefits of SDNs and edge computing to efficiently meet the delay
requirements of various PS-LTE services. Numerical results verified that under
the proposed DR-PSLTE architecture, delay is reduced by 20% as compared with
the conventional centralized computing architecture.Comment: 9,
Reliable Video Streaming over mmWave with Multi Connectivity and Network Coding
The next generation of multimedia applications will require the
telecommunication networks to support a higher bitrate than today, in order to
deliver virtual reality and ultra-high quality video content to the users. Most
of the video content will be accessed from mobile devices, prompting the
provision of very high data rates by next generation (5G) cellular networks. A
possible enabler in this regard is communication at mmWave frequencies, given
the vast amount of available spectrum that can be allocated to mobile users;
however, the harsh propagation environment at such high frequencies makes it
hard to provide a reliable service. This paper presents a reliable video
streaming architecture for mmWave networks, based on multi connectivity and
network coding, and evaluates its performance using a novel combination of the
ns-3 mmWave module, real video traces and the network coding library Kodo. The
results show that it is indeed possible to reliably stream video over cellular
mmWave links, while the combination of multi connectivity and network coding

Performance Comparison of Dual Connectivity and Hard Handover for LTE-5G Tight Integration
Communications at frequencies above 10 GHz (the mmWave band) are expected to
play a major role for the next generation of cellular networks (5G), because of
the potential multi-gigabit, ultra-low latency performance of this technology.
mmWave frequencies however suffer from very high isotropic pathloss, which may
result in cells with a much smaller coverage area than current LTE macrocells.
High directionality techniques will be used to improve signal quality and
extend coverage area, along with a high density deployment of mmWave base
stations (BS). However, when propagation conditions are hard and it is
difficult to provide high quality coverage with mmWave BS, it is necessary to
rely on previous generation LTE base stations, which make use of lower
frequencies (900 MHz - 3.5 GHz), which are less sensitive to blockage and
experience lower pathloss. In order to provide ultra-reliable services to
mobile users there is a need for network architectures that tightly and
seamlessly integrate the LTE and mmWave Radio Access Technologies. In this
paper we will present two possible alternatives for this integration and show

V2X Meets NOMA: Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for 5G Enabled Vehicular Networks
Benefited from the widely deployed infrastructure, the LTE network has
recently been considered as a promising candidate to support the
vehicle-to-everything (V2X) services. However, with a massive number of devices
accessing the V2X network in the future, the conventional OFDM-based LTE
network faces the congestion issues due to its low efficiency of orthogonal
access, resulting in significant access delay and posing a great challenge
especially to safety-critical applications. The non-orthogonal multiple access
(NOMA) technique has been well recognized as an effective solution for the
future 5G cellular networks to provide broadband communications and massive
connectivity. In this article, we investigate the applicability of NOMA in
supporting cellular V2X services to achieve low latency and high reliability.
Starting with a basic V2X unicast system, a novel NOMA-based scheme is proposed
to tackle the technical hurdles in designing high spectral efficient scheduling
and resource allocation schemes in the ultra dense topology. We then extend it
to a more general V2X broadcasting system. Other NOMA-based extended V2X

Enabling Communication Technologies for Automated Unmanned Vehicles in Industry 4.0
Within the context of Industry 4.0, mobile robot systems such as automated
guided vehicles (AGVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are one of the major
areas challenging current communication and localization technologies. Due to
stringent requirements on latency and reliability, several of the existing
solutions are not capable of meeting the performance required by industrial
automation applications. Additionally, the disparity in types and applications
of unmanned vehicle (UV) calls for more flexible communication technologies in
order to address their specific requirements. In this paper, we propose several
use cases for UVs within the context of Industry 4.0 and consider their
respective requirements. We also identify wireless technologies that support
