A Bayesian Network View on Acoustic Model-Based Techniques for Robust Speech Recognition
This article provides a unifying Bayesian network view on various approaches
for acoustic model adaptation, missing feature, and uncertainty decoding that
are well-known in the literature of robust automatic speech recognition. The
representatives of these classes can often be deduced from a Bayesian network
that extends the conventional hidden Markov models used in speech recognition.
These extensions, in turn, can in many cases be motivated from an underlying
observation model that relates clean and distorted feature vectors. By
converting the observation models into a Bayesian network representation, we
formulate the corresponding compensation rules leading to a unified view on
known derivations as well as to new formulations for certain approaches. The
generic Bayesian perspective provided in this contribution thus highlights
structural differences and similarities between the analyzed approaches
Affective Music Information Retrieval
Much of the appeal of music lies in its power to convey emotions/moods and to
evoke them in listeners. In consequence, the past decade witnessed a growing
interest in modeling emotions from musical signals in the music information
retrieval (MIR) community. In this article, we present a novel generative
approach to music emotion modeling, with a specific focus on the
valence-arousal (VA) dimension model of emotion. The presented generative
model, called \emph{acoustic emotion Gaussians} (AEG), better accounts for the
subjectivity of emotion perception by the use of probability distributions.
Specifically, it learns from the emotion annotations of multiple subjects a
Gaussian mixture model in the VA space with prior constraints on the
corresponding acoustic features of the training music pieces. Such a
computational framework is technically sound, capable of learning in an online
fashion, and thus applicable to a variety of applications, including
user-independent (general) and user-dependent (personalized) emotion
recognition and emotion-based music retrieval. We report evaluations of the
aforementioned applications of AEG on a larger-scale emotion-annotated corpora,
AMG1608, to demonstrate the effectiveness of AEG and to showcase how
evaluations are conducted for research on emotion-based MIR. Directions of

Scaled unscented transform Gaussian sum filter: theory and application
In this work we consider the state estimation problem in
nonlinear/non-Gaussian systems. We introduce a framework, called the scaled
unscented transform Gaussian sum filter (SUT-GSF), which combines two ideas:
the scaled unscented Kalman filter (SUKF) based on the concept of scaled
unscented transform (SUT), and the Gaussian mixture model (GMM). The SUT is
used to approximate the mean and covariance of a Gaussian random variable which
is transformed by a nonlinear function, while the GMM is adopted to approximate
the probability density function (pdf) of a random variable through a set of
Gaussian distributions. With these two tools, a framework can be set up to
assimilate nonlinear systems in a recursive way. Within this framework, one can
treat a nonlinear stochastic system as a mixture model of a set of sub-systems,
each of which takes the form of a nonlinear system driven by a known Gaussian
random process. Then, for each sub-system, one applies the SUKF to estimate the
mean and covariance of the underlying Gaussian random variable transformed by
the nonlinear governing equations of the sub-system. Incorporating the
estimations of the sub-systems into the GMM gives an explicit (approximate)
form of the pdf, which can be regarded as a "complete" solution to the state
estimation problem, as all of the statistical information of interest can be
obtained from the explicit form of the pdf ...

scaled unscented transform
Single camera pose estimation using Bayesian filtering and Kinect motion priors
Traditional approaches to upper body pose estimation using monocular vision
rely on complex body models and a large variety of geometric constraints. We
argue that this is not ideal and somewhat inelegant as it results in large
processing burdens, and instead attempt to incorporate these constraints
through priors obtained directly from training data. A prior distribution
covering the probability of a human pose occurring is used to incorporate
likely human poses. This distribution is obtained offline, by fitting a
Gaussian mixture model to a large dataset of recorded human body poses, tracked
using a Kinect sensor. We combine this prior information with a random walk
transition model to obtain an upper body model, suitable for use within a
recursive Bayesian filtering framework. Our model can be viewed as a mixture of
discrete Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, in that states behave as random walks,
but drift towards a set of typically observed poses. This model is combined
with measurements of the human head and hand positions, using recursive
Bayesian estimation to incorporate temporal information. Measurements are
obtained using face detection and a simple skin colour hand detector, trained
using the detected face. The suggested model is designed with analytical
tractability in mind and we show that the pose tracking can be
Rao-Blackwellised using the mixture Kalman filter, allowing for computational
efficiency while still incorporating bio-mechanical properties of the upper
body. In addition, the use of the proposed upper body model allows reliable
three-dimensional pose estimates to be obtained indirectly for a number of
joints that are often difficult to detect using traditional object recognition
strategies. Comparisons with Kinect sensor results and the state of the art in

A Review of Audio Features and Statistical Models Exploited for Voice Pattern Design
Audio fingerprinting, also named as audio hashing, has been well-known as a
powerful technique to perform audio identification and synchronization. It
basically involves two major steps: fingerprint (voice pattern) design and
matching search. While the first step concerns the derivation of a robust and
compact audio signature, the second step usually requires knowledge about
database and quick-search algorithms. Though this technique offers a wide range
of real-world applications, to the best of the authors' knowledge, a
comprehensive survey of existing algorithms appeared more than eight years ago.
Thus, in this paper, we present a more up-to-date review and, for emphasizing
on the audio signal processing aspect, we focus our state-of-the-art survey on
the fingerprint design step for which various audio features and their
