    The advent of multicore systems has renewed the interest of research community on real-time scheduling on multiprocessor systems. Real-time scheduling theory for uniprocessors is considered a mature research field, but real-time scheduling theory for multiprocessors is an emerging research field. Being part of this research community I have decided to implement the Sporadic Multiprocessor Linux Scheduler that implements a new real-time scheduling algorithm, which was designed to schedule real-time sporadic tasks on multiprocessor systems.     A Fuzzy Algorithm for Scheduling Periodic Tasks on Multiprocessor Soft Real-Time Systems

    Summary In this paper we consider the use of fuzzy logic in the scheduling of periodic tasks in soft real-time multiprocessor systems. Most researches concerning real-time system scheduling assumes scheduling constraint to be precise. However, in many circumstances the values of these parameters are vague. The vagueness of parameters suggests that we make use of fuzzy logic to decide in what order the requests should be executed to better utilize the system and as a result reduce the chance of a request being missed. Our main contribution is proposing a fuzzy approach to multiprocessor real-time scheduling in which the scheduling parameters are treated as fuzzy variables. A simulation is also performed and the results are judged against each other. It is concluded that the proposed fuzzy approach is very promising and it has the potential to be considered for future research

    Optimal virtual cluster-based multiprocessor scheduling

    Scheduling of constrained deadline sporadic task systems on multiprocessor platforms is an area which has received much attention in the recent past. It is widely believed that finding an optimal scheduler is hard, and therefore most studies have focused on developing algorithms with good processor utilization bounds. These algorithms can be broadly classified into two categories: partitioned scheduling in which tasks are statically assigned to individual processors, and global scheduling in which each task is allowed to execute on any processor in the platform. In this paper we consider a third, more general, approach called cluster-based scheduling. In this approach each task is statically assigned to a processor cluster, tasks in each cluster are globally scheduled among themselves, and clusters in turn are scheduled on the multiprocessor platform. We develop techniques to support such cluster-based scheduling algorithms, and also consider properties that minimize total processor utilization of individual clusters. In the last part of this paper, we develop new virtual cluster-based scheduling algorithms. For implicit deadline sporadic task systems, we develop an optimal scheduling algorithm that is neither Pfair nor ERfair. We also show that the processor utilization bound of us-edf{m/(2m−1)} can be improved by using virtual clustering. Since neither partitioned nor global strategies dominate over the other, cluster-based scheduling is a natural direction for research towards achieving improved processor utilization bounds

    NPM-BUNDLE: Non-Preemptive Multitask Scheduling for Jobs with BUNDLE-Based Thread-Level Scheduling

    The BUNDLE and BUNDLEP scheduling algorithms are cache-cognizant thread-level scheduling algorithms and associated worst case execution time and cache overhead (WCETO) techniques for hard real-time multi-threaded tasks. The BUNDLE-based approaches utilize the inter-thread cache benefit to reduce WCETO values for jobs. Currently, the BUNDLE-based approaches are limited to scheduling a single task. This work aims to expand the applicability of BUNDLE-based scheduling to multiple task multi-threaded task sets. BUNDLE-based scheduling leverages knowledge of potential cache conflicts to selectively preempt one thread in favor of another from the same job. This thread-level preemption is a requirement for the run-time behavior and WCETO calculation to receive the benefit of BUNDLE-based approaches. This work proposes scheduling BUNDLE-based jobs non-preemptively according to the earliest deadline first (EDF) policy. Jobs are forbidden from preempting one another, while threads within a job are allowed to preempt other threads. An accompanying schedulability test is provided, named Threads Per Job (TPJ). TPJ is a novel schedulability test, input is a task set specification which may be transformed (under certain restrictions); dividing threads among tasks in an effort to find a feasible task set. Enhanced by the flexibility to transform task sets and taking advantage of the inter-thread cache benefit, the evaluation shows TPJ scheduling task sets fully preemptive EDF cannot

    An Efficient Online Benefit-aware Multiprocessor Scheduling Technique for Soft Real-Time Tasks Using Online Choice of Approximation Algorithms

    Maximizing the benefit gained by soft real-time tasks in many applications and embedded systems is highly needed to provide an acceptable QoS (Quality of Service). Examples of such applications and embedded systems include real-time medical monitoring systems, video- streaming servers, multiplayer video games, and mobile multimedia devices. In these systems, tasks are not equally critical (or beneficial). Each task comes with its own benefit-density function which can be different from the others’. The sooner a task completes, the more benefit it gains. In this work, a novel online benefit-aware preemptive approach is presented in order to enhance scheduling of soft real-time aperiodic and periodic tasks in multiprocessor systems. The objective of this work is enhancing the QoS by increasing the total benefit, while reducing flow times and deadline misses. This method prioritizes the tasks using their benefit-density functions, which imply their importance to the system, and schedules them in a real-time basis. The first model I propose is for scheduling soft real-time aperiodic tasks. An online choice of two approximation algorithms, greedy and load-balancing, is used in order to distribute the low- priority tasks among identical processors at the time of their arrival without using any statistics. The results of theoretical analysis and simulation experiments show that this method is able to maximize the gained benefit and decrease the computational complexity (compared to existing algorithms) while minimizing makespan with fewer missed deadlines and more balanced usage of processors. I also propose two more versions of this algorithm for scheduling SRT periodic tasks, with implicit and non-implicit deadlines, in addition to another version with a modified loadbalancing factor. The extensive simulation experiments and empirical comparison of these algorithms with the state of the art, using different utilization levels and various benefit density functions show that these new techniques outperform the existing ones. A general framework for benefit-aware multiprocessor scheduling in applications with periodic, aperiodic or mixed real-time tasks is also provided in this work.Computer Science, Department o

    Scheduling and locking in multiprocessor real-time operating systems

    With the widespread adoption of multicore architectures, multiprocessors are now a standard deployment platform for (soft) real-time applications. This dissertation addresses two questions fundamental to the design of multicore-ready real-time operating systems: (1) Which scheduling policies offer the greatest flexibility in satisfying temporal constraints; and (2) which locking algorithms should be used to avoid unpredictable delays? With regard to Question 1, LITMUSRT, a real-time extension of the Linux kernel, is presented and its design is discussed in detail. Notably, LITMUSRT implements link-based scheduling, a novel approach to controlling blocking due to non-preemptive sections. Each implemented scheduler (22 configurations in total) is evaluated under consideration of overheads on a 24-core Intel Xeon platform. The experiments show that partitioned earliest-deadline first (EDF) scheduling is generally preferable in a hard real-time setting, whereas global and clustered EDF scheduling are effective in a soft real-time setting. With regard to Question 2, real-time locking protocols are required to ensure that the maximum delay due to priority inversion can be bounded a priori. Several spinlock- and semaphore-based multiprocessor real-time locking protocols for mutual exclusion (mutex), reader-writer (RW) exclusion, and k-exclusion are proposed and analyzed. A new category of RW locks suited to worst-case analysis, termed phase-fair locks, is proposed and three efficient phase-fair spinlock implementations are provided (one with few atomic operations, one with low space requirements, and one with constant RMR complexity). Maximum priority-inversion blocking is proposed as a natural complexity measure for semaphore protocols. It is shown that there are two classes of schedulability analysis, namely suspension-oblivious and suspension-aware analysis, that yield two different lower bounds on blocking. Five asymptotically optimal locking protocols are designed and analyzed: a family of mutex, RW, and k-exclusion protocols for global, partitioned, and clustered scheduling that are asymptotically optimal in the suspension-oblivious case, and a mutex protocol for partitioned scheduling that is asymptotically optimal in the suspension-aware case.     Control techniques for thermal-aware energy-efficient real time multiprocessor scheduling

    La utilización de microprocesadores multinúcleo no sólo es atractiva para la industria sino que en muchos ámbitos es la única opción. La planificación tiempo real sobre estas plataformas es mucho más compleja que sobre monoprocesadores y en general empeoran el problema de sobre-diseño, llevando a la utilización de muchos más procesadores /núcleos de los necesarios. Se han propuesto algoritmos basados en planificación fluida que optimizan la utilización de los procesadores, pero hasta el momento presentan en general inconvenientes que los alejan de su aplicación práctica, no siendo el menor el elevado número de cambios de contexto y migraciones.Esta tesis parte de la hipótesis de que es posible diseñar algoritmos basados en planificación fluida, que optimizan la utilización de los procesadores, cumpliendo restricciones temporales, térmicas y energéticas, con un bajo número de cambios de contexto y migraciones, y compatibles tanto con la generación fuera de línea de ejecutivos cíclicos atractivos para la industria, como de planificadores que integran técnicas de control en tiempo de ejecución que permiten la gestión eficiente tanto de tareas aperiódicas como de desviaciones paramétricas o pequeñas perturbaciones.A este respecto, esta tesis contribuye con varias soluciones. En primer lugar, mejora una metodología de modelo que representa todas las dimensiones del problema bajo un único formalismo (Redes de Petri Continuas Temporizadas). En segundo lugar, propone un método de generación de un ejecutivo cíclico, calculado en ciclos de procesador, para un conjunto de tareas tiempo real duro sobre multiprocesadores que optimiza la utilización de los núcleos de procesamiento respetando también restricciones térmicas y de energía, sobre la base de una planificación fluida. Considerar la sobrecarga derivada del número de cambios de contexto y migraciones en un ejecutivo cíclico plantea un dilema de causalidad: el número de cambios de contexto (y en consecuencia su sobrecarga) no se conoce hasta generar el ejecutivo cíclico, pero dicho número no se puede minimizar hasta que se ha calculado. La tesis propone una solución a este dilema mediante un método iterativo de convergencia demostrada que logra minimizar la sobrecarga mencionada.En definitiva, la tesis consigue explotar la idea de planificación fluida para maximizar la utilización (donde maximizar la utilización es un gran problema en la industria) generando un sencillo ejecutivo cíclico de mínima sobrecarga (ya que la sobrecarga implica un gran problema de los planificadores basados en planificación fluida).Finalmente, se propone un método para utilizar las referencias de la planificación fuera de línea establecida en el ejecutivo cíclico para su seguimiento por parte de un controlador de frecuencia en línea, de modo que se pueden afrontar pequeñas perturbaciones y variaciones paramétricas, integrando la gestión de tareas aperiódicas (tiempo real blando) mientras se asegura la integridad de la ejecución del conjunto de tiempo real duro.Estas aportaciones constituyen una novedad en el campo, refrendada por las publicaciones derivadas de este trabajo de tesis.<br /
