    Physically Embedded Genetic Algorithm Learning in Multi-Robot Scenarios: The PEGA algorithm

    We present experiments in which a group of autonomous mobile robots learn to perform fundamental sensor-motor tasks through a collaborative learning process. Behavioural strategies, i.e. motor responses to sensory stimuli, are encoded by means of genetic strings stored on the individual robots, and adapted through a genetic algorithm (Mitchell, 1998) executed by the entire robot collective: robots communicate their own strings and corresponding fitness to each other, and then execute a genetic algorithm to improve their individual behavioural strategy. The robots acquired three different sensormotor competences, as well as the ability to select one of two, or one of three behaviours depending on context ("behaviour management"). Results show that fitness indeed increases with increasing learning time, and the analysis of the acquired behavioural strategies demonstrates that they are effective in accomplishing the desired task

    Bounded Distributed Flocking Control of Nonholonomic Mobile Robots

    There have been numerous studies on the problem of flocking control for multiagent systems whose simplified models are presented in terms of point-mass elements. Meanwhile, full dynamic models pose some challenging problems in addressing the flocking control problem of mobile robots due to their nonholonomic dynamic properties. Taking practical constraints into consideration, we propose a novel approach to distributed flocking control of nonholonomic mobile robots by bounded feedback. The flocking control objectives consist of velocity consensus, collision avoidance, and cohesion maintenance among mobile robots. A flocking control protocol which is based on the information of neighbor mobile robots is constructed. The theoretical analysis is conducted with the help of a Lyapunov-like function and graph theory. Simulation results are shown to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed distributed flocking control scheme

    Particle Swarm Optimization Based Source Seeking

    Signal source seeking using autonomous vehicles is a complex problem. The complexity increases manifold when signal intensities captured by physical sensors onboard are noisy and unreliable. Added to the fact that signal strength decays with distance, noisy environments make it extremely difficult to describe and model a decay function. This paper addresses our work with seeking maximum signal strength in a continuous electromagnetic signal source with mobile robots, using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). A one to one correspondence with swarm members in a PSO and physical Mobile robots is established and the positions of the robots are iteratively updated as the PSO algorithm proceeds forward. Since physical robots are responsive to swarm position updates, modifications were required to implement the interaction between real robots and the PSO algorithm. The development of modifications necessary to implement PSO on mobile robots, and strategies to adapt to real life environments such as obstacles and collision objects are presented in this paper.     Realization of reactive control for multi purpose mobile agents

    Mobile robots are built for different purposes, have different physical size, shape, mechanics and electronics. They are required to work in real-time, realize more than one goal simultaneously, hence to communicate and cooperate with other agents. The approach proposed in this paper for mobile robot control is reactive and has layered structure that supports multi sensor perception. Potential field method is implemented for both obstacle avoidance and goal tracking. However imaginary forces of the obstacles and of the goal point are separately treated, and then resulting behaviors are fused with the help of the geometry. Proposed control is tested on simulations where different scenarios are studied. Results have confirmed the high performance of the method

    MPC-based humanoid pursuit-evasion in the presence of obstacles

    We consider a pursuit-evasion problem between humanoids in the presence of obstacles. In our scenario, the pursuer enters the safety area of the evader headed for collision, while the latter executes a fast evasive motion. Control schemes are designed for both the pursuer and the evader. They are structurally identical, although the objectives are different: the pursuer tries to align its direction of motion with the line- of-sight to the evader, whereas the evader tries to move in a direction orthogonal to the line-of-sight to the pursuer. At the core of the control architecture is a Model Predictive Control scheme for generating a stable gait. This allows for the inclusion of workspace obstacles, which we take into account at two levels: during the determination of the footsteps orientation and as an explicit MPC constraint. We illustrate the results with simulations on NAO humanoids

    Application of Biological Learning Theories to Mobile Robot Avoidance and Approach Behaviors

    We present a neural network that learns to control approach and avoidance behaviors in a mobile robot using the mechanisms of classical and operant conditioning. Learning, which requires no supervision, takes place as the robot moves around an environment cluttered with obstacles and light sources. The neural network requires no knowledge of the geometry of the robot or of the quality, number or configuration of the robot's sensors.
