Rational approximation to the fractional Laplacian operator in reaction-diffusion problems
This paper provides a new numerical strategy to solve fractional in space
reaction-diffusion equations on bounded domains under homogeneous Dirichlet
boundary conditions. Using the matrix transform method the fractional Laplacian
operator is replaced by a matrix which, in general, is dense. The approach here
presented is based on the approximation of this matrix by the product of two
suitable banded matrices. This leads to a semi-linear initial value problem in
which the matrices involved are sparse. Numerical results are presented to
verify the effectiveness of the proposed solution strategy
An efficient implementation of an implicit FEM scheme for fractional-in-space reaction-diffusion equations
Fractional differential equations are becoming increasingly used as a modelling tool for processes with anomalous diffusion or spatial heterogeneity. However, the presence of a fractional differential operator causes memory (time fractional) or nonlocality (space fractional) issues, which impose a number of computational constraints. In this paper we develop efficient, scalable techniques for solving fractional-in-space reaction diffusion equations using the finite element method on both structured and unstructured grids, and robust techniques for computing the fractional power of a matrix times a vector. Our approach is show-cased by solving the fractional Fisher and fractional Allen-Cahn reaction-diffusion equations in two and three spatial dimensions, and analysing the speed of the travelling wave and size of the interface in terms of the fractional power of the underlying Laplacian operator
Psi-Series Solution of Fractional Ginzburg-Landau Equation
One-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equations with derivatives of noninteger
order are considered. Using psi-series with fractional powers, the solution of
the fractional Ginzburg-Landau (FGL) equation is derived. The leading-order
behaviours of solutions about an arbitrary singularity, as well as their
resonance structures, have been obtained. It was proved that fractional
equations of order with polynomial nonlinearity of order have the
noninteger power-like behavior of order near the singularity.Comment: LaTeX, 19 pages, 2 figure
Rational spectral methods for PDEs involving fractional Laplacian in unbounded domains
Many PDEs involving fractional Laplacian are naturally set in unbounded
domains with underlying solutions decay very slowly, subject to certain power
laws. Their numerical solutions are under-explored. This paper aims at
developing accurate spectral methods using rational basis (or modified mapped
Gegenbauer functions) for such models in unbounded domains. The main building
block of the spectral algorithms is the explicit representations for the
Fourier transform and fractional Laplacian of the rational basis, derived from
some useful integral identites related to modified Bessel functions. With these
at our disposal, we can construct rational spectral-Galerkin and direct
collocation schemes by pre-computing the associated fractional differentiation
matrices. We obtain optimal error estimates of rational spectral approximation
in the fractional Sobolev spaces, and analyze the optimal convergence of the
proposed Galerkin scheme. We also provide ample numerical results to show that
the rational method outperforms the Hermite function approach
A new approach for solving nonlinear Thomas-Fermi equation based on fractional order of rational Bessel functions
In this paper, the fractional order of rational Bessel functions collocation
method (FRBC) to solve Thomas-Fermi equation which is defined in the
semi-infinite domain and has singularity at and its boundary condition
occurs at infinity, have been introduced. We solve the problem on semi-infinite
domain without any domain truncation or transformation of the domain of the
problem to a finite domain. This approach at first, obtains a sequence of
linear differential equations by using the quasilinearization method (QLM),
then at each iteration solves it by FRBC method. To illustrate the reliability
of this work, we compare the numerical results of the present method with some
well-known results in other to show that the new method is accurate, efficient
and applicable
On the analysis of mixed-index time fractional differential equation systems
In this paper we study the class of mixed-index time fractional differential
equations in which different components of the problem have different time
fractional derivatives on the left hand side. We prove a theorem on the
solution of the linear system of equations, which collapses to the well-known
Mittag-Leffler solution in the case the indices are the same, and also
generalises the solution of the so-called linear sequential class of time
fractional problems. We also investigate the asymptotic stability properties of
this class of problems using Laplace transforms and show how Laplace transforms
can be used to write solutions as linear combinations of generalised
Mittag-Leffler functions in some cases. Finally we illustrate our results with
some numerical simulations.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures (some are made up of sub-figures - there are 15
