Scientific divers quantify first known outbreaks of cold-water coral disease

    Get PDF
Coral diseases are widely reported in the tropics but the first incidence of cold-water coral disease was not noted until 2002 when divers recorded an outbreak at 10-28 m depth off Lundy in a NE Atlantic marine protected area. The seafan Eunicella verrucosa exhibited coenchyme necrosis and subsequent diving surveys of \u3e600 colonies at 13 sites since revealed that disease outbreaks were widespread in SW England to depths of 50 m from 2003-2008, possibly caused by infection by Vibrio bacteria at high temperatures

Nanomaterials with high solar reflectance as an emerging path towards energy-efficient envelope systems: a review

    Get PDF
The application of nanomaterials in the construction field is allowing the development of smart, green, durable and more efficient buildings. Among the most widely researched nanomaterials are nanosized cool pigments, which are being enforced to achieve thermal and energy-efficient facades, with the development of high reflectance and retro-reflectance coatings. Their peculiar optical and catalytic activity turns nanomaterials into suitable candidates to be used as dark coloured high solar reflectance without affecting aesthetic characteristics, thus improving the durability of coatings. The objective of this paper is to review the state-of-the-art on the benefits of using high reflectance nanopigments as coatings in building facades and their production and synthesis processes. It is thus divided into three main topics: (i) the benefits of using nanopigments on facades, (ii) the most important nanomaterials used as cool pigments and (iii) the main methods of synthesizing nanopigments. One expects that the study of near-infrared nanopigmentation synthesis processes will be able to promote and disseminate the use of nanotechnology in construction, assessing the production problems and limitation and thus helping to disseminate new products by reducing production costs and increase availability. Toxicity study of CaCe₂S₄

    Get PDF
In recent years, rare earth sulfides have received attention for their interesting thermoelectric and optical properties.1 They exhibit a fairly wide range of colors, which makes them promising candidates as pigments.2 The demand for red colored pigments in industrial application is high but the current ones in use are not environmentally friendly. This has garnered attention towards the rare-earth sulfides. Among the rare-earth sulfide compounds, Ce₂S₃ is a highperformance pigment of red color. It is particularly interesting as doping with alkaline earth metal stabilizes the structure of Ce₂S₃ at low temperature and plays a role in tuning its color from red to orange. This thesis presents the cytotoxicity study of an alkaline earth doped rare earth sulfide of red color, CaCe₂S₄. Cytotoxicity of CaCe₂S₄ and CdS was evaluated on human dermal fibroblasts cells (HDFα) with Lactase dehydrogenase (LDH) assay. The study showed higher toxicity of CaCe₂S₄ compound at 1000 μg/mL-50 μg/mL. At concentrations of 1 ng/mL-200 ng/mL CaCe₂S₄ showed considerably low toxicity compared to commercially successful red pigment CdS, which makes it a reliable environment friendly pigment

    Get PDF
440 p.TECHNART2017 is the international biannual congress on the application of Analytical Techniques in Art and Cultural Heritage. The aim of this European conference is to provide a scientific forum to present and promote the use of analytical spectroscopic techniques in cultural heritage on a worldwide scale to stimulate contacts and exchange experiences, making a bridge between science and art. This conference builds on the momentum of the previous TECHNART editions of Lisbon, Athens, Berlin, Amsterdam and Catania, offering an outstanding and unique opportunity for exchanging knowledge on leading edge developments. Cultural heritage studies are interpreted in a broad sense, including pigments, stones, metal, glass, ceramics, chemometrics on artwork studies, resins, fibers, forensic applications in art, history, archaeology and conservation science. The meeting is focused in different aspects: - X-ray analysis (XRF, PIXE, XRD, SEM-EDX). - Confocal X-ray microscopy (3D Micro-XRF, 3D Micro-PIXE). - Synchrotron, ion beam and neutron based techniques/instrumentation. - FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. - UV-Vis and NIR absorption/reflectance and fluorescence. - Laser-based analytical techniques (LIBS, etc.). - Magnetic resonance techniques. - Chromatography (GC, HPLC) and mass spectrometry. - Optical imaging and coherence techniques. - Mobile spectrometry and remote sensing
