    Ransomware in High-Risk Environments

    In today’s modern world, cybercrime is skyrocketing globally, which impacts a variety of organizations and endpoint users. Hackers are using a multitude of approaches and tools, including ransomware threats, to take over targeted systems. These acts of cybercrime lead to huge damages in areas of business, healthcare systems, industry sectors, and other fields. Ransomware is considered as a high risk threat, which is designed to hijack the data. This paper is demonstrating the ransomware types, and how they are evolved from the malware and trojan codes, which is used to attack previous incidents, and explains the most common encryption algorithms such as AES, and RSA, ransomware uses them during infection process in order to produce complex threats. The practical approach for data encryption uses python programming language to show the efficiency of those algorithms in real attacks by executing this section on Ubuntu virtual machine. Furthermore, this paper analyzes programming languages, which is used to build ransomware. An example of ransomware code is being demonstrated in this paper, which is written specifically in C sharp language, and it has been tested out on windows operating system using MS visual studio. So, it is very important to recognize the system vulnerability, which can be very useful to prevent the ransomware. In contrast, this threat might sneak into the system easily, allowing for a ransom to be demanded. Therefore, understanding ransomware anatomy can help us to find a better solution in different situations. Consequently, this paper shows a number of outstanding removal techniques to get rid from ransomware attacks in the system

    With cybersecurity constantly in the media outlets with breaches, cybercrime, and cyberwarfare, it has become a significant concern for all. One of the most recent breaches in the summer of 2021 was the Colonial Pipeline breach, which has proven the country\u27s reliance on these industrial control systems and networking. The systems were taken for ransom by a new type of ransomware written in a different programming language. Although the Colonial Pipeline breach was quickly addressed, the impact of the gas shortage and the response time were alarming at triaging the breach. However, this attack showed the public how dangerous ransomware could be, mainly when groups target crucial supply chains and infrastructure critical to the functioning of a nation\u27s economy. The only proper solution to these attacks is a standard solution to many information security issues, user training. However, the reality of the problem is that even if computers were one hundred percent secure and infallible machines, which they are not, user error could still compromise an entire system

    A cyber-kill-chain based taxonomy of crypto-ransomware features

    In spite of being just a few years old, ransomware is quickly becoming a serious threat to our digital infrastructures, data and services. Majority of ransomware families are requesting for a ransom payment to restore a custodian access or decrypt data which were encrypted by the ransomware earlier. Although the ransomware attack strategy seems to be simple, security specialists ranked ransomware as a sophisticated attack vector with many variations and families. Wide range of features which are available in different families and versions of ransomware further complicates their detection and analysis. Though the existing body of research provides significant discussions about ransomware details and capabilities, the all research body is fragmented. Therefore, a ransomware feature taxonomy would advance cyber defenders’ understanding of associated risks of ransomware. In this paper we provide, to the best of our knowledge, the first scientific taxonomy of ransomware features, aligned with Lockheed Martin Cyber Kill Chain (CKC) model. CKC is a well-established model in industry that describes stages of cyber intrusion attempts. To ease the challenge of applying our taxonomy in real world, we also provide the corresponding ransomware defence taxonomy aligned with Courses of Action matrix (an intelligence-driven defence model). We believe that this research study is of high value for the cyber security research community, as it provides the researchers with a means of assessing the vulnerabilities and attack vectors towards the intended victims

    Ransomware Simulator for In-Depth Analysis and Detection: Leveraging Centralized Logging and Sysmon for Improved Cybersecurity

    Abstract Ransomware attacks have become increasingly prevalent and sophisticated, posing significant threats to organizations and individuals worldwide. To effectively combat these threats, security professionals must continuously develop and adapt their detection and mitigation strategies. This master thesis presents the design and implementation of a ransomware simulator to facilitate an in-depth analysis of ransomware Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) and to evaluate the effectiveness of centralized logging and Sysmon, including the latest event types, in detecting and responding to such attacks. The study explores the advanced capabilities of Sysmon as a logging tool and data source, focusing on its ability to capture multiple event types, such as file creation, process execution, and network traffic, as well as the newly added event types. The aim is to demonstrate the effectiveness of Sysmon in detecting and analyzing malicious activities, with an emphasis on the latest features. By focusing on the comprehensive aspects of a cyber-attack, the study showcases the versatility and utility of Sysmon in detecting and addressing various attack vectors. The ransomware simulator is developed using a PowerShell script that emulates various ransomware TTPs and attack scenarios, providing a comprehensive and realistic simulation of a ransomware attack. Sysmon, a powerful system monitoring tool, is utilized to monitor and log the activities associated with the simulated attack, including the events generated by the new Sysmon features. Centralized logging is achieved through the integration of Splunk Enterprise, a widely used platform for log analysis and management. The collected logs are then analyzed to identify patterns, indicators of compromise (IoCs), and potential detection and mitigation strategies. Through the development of the ransomware simulator and the subsequent analysis of Sysmon logs, this research contributes to strengthening the security posture of organizations and improving cybersecurity measures against ransomware threats, with a focus on the latest Sysmon capabilities. The results demonstrate the importance of monitoring and analyzing system events to effectively detect and respond to ransomware attacks. This research can serve as a basis for further exploration of ransomware detection and response strategies, contributing to the advancement of cybersecurity practices and the development of more robust security measures against ransomware threats
