Reducing "Structure From Motion": a General Framework for Dynamic Vision - Part 2: Experimental Evaluation
A number of methods have been proposed in the literature for estimating scene-structure and ego-motion from a sequence of images using dynamical models. Although all methods may be derived from a "natural" dynamical model within a unified framework, from an engineering perspective there are a number of trade-offs that lead to different strategies depending upon the specific applications and the goals one is targeting.
Which one is the winning strategy? In this paper we analyze the properties of the dynamical models that originate from each strategy under a variety of experimental conditions. For each model we assess the accuracy of the estimates, their robustness to measurement noise, sensitivity to initial conditions and visual angle, effects of the bas-relief ambiguity and occlusions, dependence upon the number of image measurements and their sampling rate
Comparing Kalman Filters and Observers for Power System Dynamic State Estimation with Model Uncertainty and Malicious Cyber Attacks
Kalman filters and observers are two main classes of dynamic state estimation
(DSE) routines. Power system DSE has been implemented by various Kalman
filters, such as the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the unscented Kalman
filter (UKF). In this paper, we discuss two challenges for an effective power
system DSE: (a) model uncertainty and (b) potential cyber attacks. To address
this, the cubature Kalman filter (CKF) and a nonlinear observer are introduced
and implemented. Various Kalman filters and the observer are then tested on the
16-machine, 68-bus system given realistic scenarios under model uncertainty and
different types of cyber attacks against synchrophasor measurements. It is
shown that CKF and the observer are more robust to model uncertainty and cyber
attacks than their counterparts. Based on the tests, a thorough qualitative

Bayesian Estimation of Intensity Surfaces on the Sphere via Needlet Shrinkage and Selection
This paper describes an approach for Bayesian modeling in spherical datasets. Our method is based upon a recent construction called the needlet, which is a particular form of spherical wavelet with many favorable statistical and computational properties. We perform shrinkage and selection of needlet coefficients, focusing on two main alternatives: empirical-Bayes thresholding, and Bayesian local shrinkage rules. We study the performance of the proposed methodology both on simulated data and on two real data sets: one involving the cosmic microwave background radiation, and one involving the reconstruction of a global news intensity surface inferred from published Reuters articles in August, 1996. The fully Bayesian approach based on robust, sparse shrinkage priors seems to outperform other alternatives.Business Administratio
