Butterflies and Rebirth
During the Renaissance, collectors saw Morpho butterflies as beautiful, elegant, and rare creatures. Their exotic origin and sophistication made these fascinating creatures the subjects of scientific observation, decoration, and symbolism. Butterflies of the Morpho genus include a wide variety of marvelous, striking, and beautiful species. Home to South and Central America, Morpho butterflies thrive in the rainforests of Nicaragua, Colombia, and Venezuela. When Renaissance Europeans began exploring American rainforests, they were quickly captivated by these butterflies. Morphos feature vivid blue coloration and iridescence on the dorsal side of their wings as well as a yellow-brown coloration on the other side. [excerpt
A broad typology of dry rainforests on the western slopes of New South Wales
Dry rainforests are those communities that have floristic and structural affinities to mesic rainforests and occur in parts of eastern and northern Australia where rainfall is comparatively low and often highly seasonal. The dry rainforests of the western slopes of New South Wales are poorly-understood compared to other dry rainforests in Australia, due to a lack of regional scale studies. This paper attempts to redress this by deriving a broad floristic and structural typology for this vegetation type. Phytogeographical analysis followed full floristic surveys conducted on 400 m2 plots located within dry rainforest across the western slopes of NSW. Cluster analysis and ordination of 208 plots identified six floristic groups. Unlike in some other regional studies of dry rainforest these groups were readily assigned to Webb structural types, based on leaf size classes, leaf retention classes and canopy height. Five community types were described using both floristic and structural data: 1) Ficus rubiginosa–Notelaea microcarpa notophyll vine thicket, 2) Ficus rubiginosa–Alectryon subcinereus–Notelaea microcarpa notophyll vine forest, 3) Elaeodendron australe–Notelaea microcarpa–Geijera parviflora notophyll vine thicket, 4) Notelaea microcarpa– Geijera parviflora–Ehretia membranifolia semi-evergreen vine thicket, and 5) Cadellia pentastylis low microphyll vine forest. Floristic groupings were consistent with those described by previous quantitative studies which examined smaller portions of this study area. There was also general agreement between the present analytical study and a previous intuitive classification of dry rainforest vegetation throughout the study area, but little concurrence with a continental scale floristic classification of rainforest

Ecophysiological adaptations of the lichen genera pseudocyphellaria and sticta to south temperate rainforests
Temperate rainforests are a poorly researched habitat with respect to lichen ecophysiology in comparison to desert and polar regions. The evergreen, broadleaf forests provide a dim, moist environment that is relatively stable throughout the year. Lichens are abundant in both quantity and species diversity with the large foliose genera Sticta and Pseudocyphellaria normally being dominant, visually and in terms of biomass. These lichens exhibit a great diversity of both form and habitat range. Physiological and morphological adaptation has also been demonstrated. Pseudocyphellaria dissimilis shows changes in thallus water storage capacity with evaporative demand and is also highly shade-adapted. The species has the lowest light saturation and compensation values for photosynthesis yet known for lichens (20 and 1-μmol m−2s−1, PAR, respectively). Unexpectedly it is also highly desiccation-sensitive with some thalli being killed after only 20 h exposure to 15% relative humidity. Photobiont versatility is also a feature of these genera. Photosymbiodemes occur, i.e. a single thallus containing both green algal and cyanobacterial sectors. Because the different sectors have the same fungal partner and grow in the same habitat, it is possible to investigate whether particular physiological traits are photobiont determined. The ability to recover photosynthetic activity in humid air is confined to thalli with green algal photobionts whilst the inability of thalli containing cyanobacterial photobionts to tolerate high light stress may be related to their lack of a protective xanthophyll cycle
Campylopus, a modern and successful genus!?
Campylopus with nearly 200 revised species is one of the largest genera of mosses in the world and has extremely broad geographical, altitudinal and ecological ranges. Factors to be considered for the rich speciation are 1) the enormous anatomical plasticity of the structure of the costa, 2) the ability for vegetative propagation utilizing different methods, and 3) the special twist mechanism of the cygneous setae. Phytogeographical interpretations of present ranges of species of Campylopus lead to the conclusion that this genus is of Gondwanalandic origin. Most of the species seem to be cool temperate in origin. They have adapted to dry habitats in the Mesozoic and invaded the tropical mountains during the Tertiary, accompanied by rich speciation. This is supported by the physiology of these species. According to preliminary gas exchange measurements, tropical montane species do not differ from temperate species, and are not able to stand climatic conditions of the tropical lowland rainforests; a relatively young habitat for bryophytes. A cladistic analysis of the infrageneric categories of Campylopus using phytogeographical evaluations of apomorphic character states shows that the section Homalocarpus seems to be the most primitive and the subgenera Campylopidulum and Thysanomitrion the most derived

An overview of the Lejeuneaceae in Australia
As currently understood, the Lejeuneaceae flora of Australia consists of 122 species in 27 genera. The family occurs almost exclusively in rainforested areas along the eastern coast of the continent. Based on species composition, three floristic regions are recognized: tropical, subtropical and temperate. The tropical region contains 80 percent of the total number of Lejeuneaceae found in Australia, the subtropical region contains 45 percent, and the temperate region only 15 percent of the total flora. The affinities of the Lejeuneaceae in the tropical and subtropical regions are strongest with the Asian flora, and those of the temperate region are strongest with the New Zealand flora. The diversity of the Lejeuneaceae flora in Australia is higher than might be expected for a non-equatorial region. This diversity may result from the wide variety of rainforest habitats that are available along both latitudinal and altitudinal gradients. The temperate flora is probably derived from that which existed in Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and probably southern South America prior to the breakup of Gondwanaland. The modern tropical flora is probably a mixture of species that were part of the original northern Gondwanan flora and those that have invaded more recently
Tropical rainforest bird community structure in relation to altitude, tree species composition, and null models in the Western Ghats, India
Studies of species distributions on elevational gradients are essential to
understand principles of community organisation as well as to conserve species
in montane regions. This study examined the patterns of species richness,
abundance, composition, range sizes, and distribution of rainforest birds at 14
sites along an elevational gradient (500-1400 m) in the Kalakad-Mundanthurai
Tiger Reserve (KMTR) of the Western Ghats, India. In contrast to theoretical
expectation, resident bird species richness did not change significantly with
elevation although the species composition changed substantially (<10%
similarity) between the lowest and highest elevation sites. Constancy in
species richness was possibly due to relative constancy in productivity and
lack of elevational trends in vegetation structure. Elevational range size of
birds, expected to increase with elevation according to Rapoport's rule, was
found to show a contrasting inverse U-shaped pattern because species with
narrow elevational distributions, including endemics, occurred at both ends of
the gradient (below 800 m and above 1,200 m). Bird species composition also did
not vary randomly along the gradient as assessed using a hierarchy of null
models of community assembly, from completely unconstrained models to ones with
species richness and range-size distribution restrictions. Instead, bird
community composition was significantly correlated with elevation and tree
species composition of sites, indicating the influence of deterministic factors
on bird community structure. Conservation of low- and high-elevation areas and
maintenance of tree species composition against habitat alteration are
important for bird conservation in the southern Western Ghats rainforests.Comment: 36 pages, 5 figures, two tables (including one in the appendix)
