Fearless Friday: Venissa Ledesma

This week we are celebrating the work of Venissa Ledesma ’19. Venissa is a sophomore at Gettysburg College from San Diego, California. She is an Environmental Studies major and a Peace and Justice Studies minor. Currently, Venissa is the president of the Latin American Student Association (LASA), a Program Coordinator for Immersion Projects at the Center for Public Service (CPS), a tour guide for prospective students, and a Day Host Ambassador for the Admissions office. Fearless Friday: Tiffany Lane

This week, SURGE is highlighting the fearless work of Tiffany Lane, the new director of the Women’s and LGBTQ Resource Center on campus. Although she is a new addition to the Gettysburg community, Tiffany has been working with issues of systemic injustice for much of her life. Her social justice journey began when she was an undergrad at Michigan State University (MSU), where she began to accept her identity as a queer woman. Tiffany was a student leader and activist at MSU and became so passionate about this work that she decided to make a career out of her activism. Tiffany went on to get her masters in social work from the University of Minnesota. Prior to arriving on our campus, Tiffany was the director of an LGBT center, the program coordinator of an LGBT school-based program, and a program coordinator at the University of Michigan-Flint. In addition to her roles with DPE, she is the Assistant Dean of College Life and Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities as well as the Director of the Women’s Center. Heroes of Berlin Wall Struggle

When the Berlin Wall fell 25 years ago, on Nov. 9, 1989, symbolically signaling the end of the Cold War, it was no surprise that many credited President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev for bringing it down. But the true heroes behind the fall of the Berlin Wall are those Eastern Europeans whose protests and political pressure started chipping away at the wall years before. East German citizens from a variety of political backgrounds and occupations risked their freedom in protests against communist policies and one-party rule in what they called the peaceful revolution.
