    Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Wireless Communications: Principles, Challenges, and Opportunities

    Recently there has been a flurry of research on the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in wireless networks to create smart radio environments. In a smart radio environment, surfaces are capable of manipulating the propagation of incident electromagnetic waves in a programmable manner to actively alter the channel realization, which turns the wireless channel into a controllable system block that can be optimized to improve overall system performance. In this article, we provide a tutorial overview of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for wireless communications. We describe the working principles of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and elaborate on different candidate implementations using metasurfaces and reflectarrays. We discuss the channel models suitable for both implementations and examine the feasibility of obtaining accurate channel estimates. Furthermore, we discuss the aspects that differentiate RIS optimization from precoding for traditional MIMO arrays highlighting both the arising challenges and the potential opportunities associated with this emerging technology.     Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Communication

    The adoption of a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) for downlink multi-user communication from a multi-antenna base station is investigated in this paper. We develop energy-efficient designs for both the transmit power allocation and the phase shifts of the surface reflecting elements, subject to individual link budget guarantees for the mobile users. This leads to non-convex design optimization problems for which to tackle we propose two computationally affordable approaches, capitalizing on alternating maximization, gradient descent search, and sequential fractional programming. Specifically, one algorithm employs gradient descent for obtaining the RIS phase coefficients, and fractional programming for optimal transmit power allocation. Instead, the second algorithm employs sequential fractional programming for the optimization of the RIS phase shifts. In addition, a realistic power consumption model for RIS-based systems is presented, and the performance of the proposed methods is analyzed in a realistic outdoor environment.     Simulating the temporal reference of Dutch and English Root Infinitives.

    Hoekstra & Hyams (1998) claim that the overwhelming majority of Dutch children’s Root Infinitives (RIs) are used to refer to modal (not realised) events, whereas in English speaking children, the temporal reference of RIs is free. Hoekstra & Hyams attribute this difference to qualitative differences in how temporal reference is carried by the Dutch infinitive and the English bare form. Ingram & Thompson (1996) advocate an input-driven account of this difference and suggest that the modal reading of German (and Dutch) RIs is caused by the fact that infinitive forms are predominantly used in modal contexts. This paper investigates whether an input-driven account can explain the differential reading of RIs in Dutch and English. To this end, corpora of English and Dutch Child Directed Speech were fed through MOSAIC, a computational model that has already been used to simulate the basic Optional Infinitive phenomenon. Infinitive forms in the input were tagged for modal or non-modal reference based on the sentential context in which they appeared. The output of the model was compared to the results of corpus studies and recent experimental data which call into question the strict distinction between Dutch and English advocated by Hoekstra & Hyams

    DC Spin Current Generation in a Rashba-type Quantum Channel

    We propose and demonstrate theoretically that resonant inelastic scattering (RIS) can play an important role in dc spin current generation. The RIS makes it possible to generate dc spin current via a simple gate configuration: a single finger-gate that locates atop and orients transversely to a quantum channel in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The ac biased finger-gate gives rise to a time-variation in the Rashba coupling parameter, which causes spin-resolved RIS, and subsequently contributes to the dc spin current. The spin current depends on both the static and the dynamic parts in the Rashba coupling parameter, α0\alpha_0 and α1\alpha_1, respectively, and is proportional to α0α12\alpha_0 \alpha_1^2. The proposed gate configuration has the added advantage that no dc charge current is generated. Our study also shows that the spin current generation can be enhanced significantly in a double finger-gate configuration.Comment: 4 pages,4 figure

    Simultaneous dual-element analyses of refractory metals in naturally occurring matrices using resonance ionization of sputtered atoms

    The combination of secondary neutral mass spectrometry (SNMS) and resonance ionization spectroscopy (RIS) has been shown to be a powerful tool for the detection of low levels of elemental impurities in solids. Drawbacks of the technique have been the laser-repetition-rate-limited, low duty cycle of the analysis and the fact that RIS schemes are limited to determinations of a single element. These problems have been addressed as part of an ongoing program to explore the usefulness of RIS/SNMS instruments for the analysis of naturally occurring samples. Efficient two-color, two-photon (1+1) resonance ionization schemes were identified for Mo and for four platinum-group elements (Ru, Os, Ir, and Re). Careful selection of the ionization schemes allowed Mo or Ru to be measured simultaneously with Re, Os, or Ir, using two tunable dye lasers and an XeCl excimer laser. Resonance frequencies could be switched easily under computer control, so that all five elements can be rapidly analyzed. In situ measurements of these elements in metal grains from five meteorites were conducted. From the analyses, estimates of the precision and the detection limit of the instrument were made.     Low_Tech Innovation in a High-Tech Environment? The Case of the Food Industry in the Vienna Metropolitan Region

    This paper explores the opportunities for low-tech innovations in regional high-tech contexts. The literature suggests that traditional sectors tend to be only weakly integrated in such socio-institutional environments, because the specific innovation mode of low-tech industries is not compatible with the institutional framework of high-tech. Focusing on the empirical case of the food industry situated in the Vienna metropolitan region, the paper provides evidence that the link between old industries and their high-tech contexts may be more complex than commonly thought. Drawing on 20 face-to-face interviews with local companies, knowledge providers (universities and other research organisations) and industry experts it is highlighted that strong and weak forms of integration in the regional innovation system (RIS) co-exist, depending on the specific RIS dimension under consideration. Innovative companies in the local food sector, thus, embed themselves in a selective way in their regional institutional context. They make use of the scientific competences available within the RIS whilst at the same time they tend to “bypass” the RIS and tap into knowledge sources located outside the region.
