TESTING THE NEG MODEL : FURTHER EVIDENCE FROM PANEL DATA

    Get PDF
Local wage variations in the UK are explained by two non-nested rival hypotheses. The first derives from new economic geography theory, in which wages depend on market access. The second come from urban economics theory, giving a reduced form with wage rates dependent on employment density. The paper examines whether one of these rivals is encompassed by the other by fitting an artificial nesting model using three alternative panel data estimators. The estimates indicate that neither hypothesis is encompassed by its rival, suggesting a need for new, more comprehensive, theory.PANEL DATA, SPATIALLY CORRELATED ERROR COMPONENTS, MARKET ACCESS, NEW ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY, SPATIAL ECONOMETRICS, NON-NESTED HYPOTHESIS

    Let A = \pmatrix A_{11} & A_{12} \cr A_{21} & A_{22}\cr\pmatrix \in M_n, where A11MmA_{11} \in M_m with mn/2m \le n/2, be such that the numerical range of AA lies in the set \{e^{i\varphi} z \in \IC: |\Im z| \le (\Re z) \tan \alpha\}, for some φ[0,2π)\varphi \in [0, 2\pi) and α[0,π/2)\alpha \in [0, \pi/2). We obtain the optimal containment region for the generalized eigenvalue λ\lambda satisfying \lambda \pmatrix A_{11} & 0 \cr 0 & A_{22}\cr\pmatrix x = \pmatrix 0 & A_{12} \cr A_{21} & 0\cr\pmatrix x \quad \hbox{for some nonzero} x \in \IC^n, and the optimal eigenvalue containment region of the matrix ImA111A12A221A21I_m - A_{11}^{-1}A_{12} A_{22}^{-1}A_{21} in case A11A_{11} and A22A_{22} are invertible. From this result, one can show det(A)sec2m(α)det(A11)det(A22)|\det(A)| \le \sec^{2m}(\alpha) |\det(A_{11})\det(A_{22})|. In particular, if AA is a accretive-dissipative matrix, then det(A)2mdet(A11)det(A22)|\det(A)| \le 2^m |\det(A_{11})\det(A_{22})|. These affirm some conjectures of Drury and Lin.Comment: 6 pages, to appear in Journal of Mathematical Analysi

Coherent eta photoproduction on the deuteron in the S11S_{11} resonance region

Coherent eta photoproduction on the deuteron is studied in the S11S_{11} resonance region neglecting eta rescattering and two-body processes. For the elementary reaction on the nucleon, we have considered the dominant S11(1535)S_{11}(1535) resonance and as background the nucleon pole terms as well as ρ\rho and ω\omega meson exchange. We have studied the influence of different choices for the neutron resonance amplitude, different prescriptions for fixing the invariant mass of the resonance amplitude and different methods for deriving the elementary production amplitude for an arbitrary reference frame.Comment: 33 pages revtex including 13 postscript figure

eta-photoproduction in the resonance energy region

The η\eta production in the nucleon resonance energy region is studied within the unitary coupled-channels effective Lagrangian approach of the Giessen model. We demonstrate that the second peak recently observed in the cross section of η\eta photoproduction on the neutron at s\sqrt{s}=1.66 GeV can be explained in terms of coupled-channel effects due to S11(1650)S_{11}(1650) and P11(1710)P_{11}(1710) resonance excitations

Abstract - This paper describes inward and outward stocks and flows of Chinese direct investment, and assesses what they might disclose about the current process of economic development. More particularly, it shows the difficulties met with by the Chinese economy in acquiring the high technology standards it seeks.CHINE, INVESTISSEMENTS DIRECTS ÉTRANGERS, DÉVELOPPEMENT ÉCONOMIQUE, TRANSFERT TECHNOLOGIQUE

A CSO Search for ll-C3_3H+^+: Detection in the Orion Bar PDR

    Get PDF
The results of a Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) search for ll-C3_3H+^+, first detected by Pety et al. (2012) in observations toward the Horsehead photodissociation region (PDR), are presented. A total of 39 sources were observed in the 1 mm window. Evidence of emission from ll-C3_3H+^+ is found in only a single source - the Orion Bar PDR region, which shows a rotational temperature of 178(13) K and a column density of 7(2) x 101110^{11} cm2^{-2}. In the remaining sources, upper limits of ~10111013^{11} - 10^{13} cm2^{-2} are found. These results are discussed in the context of guiding future observational searches for this species.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 4 table
