D-branes and Short Distances in String Theory
We study the behavior of D-branes at distances far shorter than the string
length scale~. We argue that short-distance phenomena are described by the
IR behavior of the D-brane world-volume quantum theory. This description is
valid until the brane motion becomes relativistic. At weak string coupling
\gs this corresponds to momenta and energies far above string scale. We use
0-brane quantum mechanics to study 0-brane collisions and find structure at
length scales corresponding to the eleven-dimensional Planck length (\lp11
\sim \gs^{1/3} l_s) and to the radius of the eleventh dimension in M-theory
(\R11 \sim \gs l_s). We use 0-branes to probe non-trivial geometries and
topologies at sub-stringy scales. We study the 0-brane 4-brane system,
calculating the 0-brane moduli space metric, and find the bound state at
threshold, which has characteristic size \lp11. We examine the blowup of an
orbifold and are able to resolve the resulting down to size \lp11. A
0-brane with momentum approaching is able to explore a larger
configuration space in which the blowup is embedded. Analogous phenomena occur
for small instantons. We finally turn to 1-branes and calculate the size of a

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pembelajaran joyful learning terhadap minat belajar siswa kelas V mata pelajaran IPA SD Negeri Tangkil 4. Subyek penelitian adalah guru kelas V dan Siswa kelas V SD Negeri Tangkil 4 yang berjumlah 22 siswa. Uji Validitas
penelitian ini menggunakan korelasi product moment dengan 16 soal valid dari 20 soal, sedangkan Hasil Uji reabilitas Cronbach’s alpha dengan koefisien reliabilitas (r11)0,920. Harga (r11) untuk semua variabel lebih besar dari rtabel pada taraf signifikansi
H0 Revisited
I reanalyse the Riess et al. (2011, hereafter R11) Cepheid data using the
revised geometric maser distance to NGC 4258 of Humphreys et al. (2013). I
explore different outlier rejection criteria designed to give a reduced
chi-squared of unity and compare the results with the R11 rejection algorithm,
which produces a reduced chi-squared that is substantially less than unity and,
in some cases, to underestimates of the errors on parameters. I show that there
are sub-luminous low metallicity Cepheids in the R11 sample that skew the
global fits of the period-luminosity relation. This has a small but
non-negligible impact on the global fits using NGC 4258 as a distance scale
anchor, but adds a poorly constrained source of systematic error when using the
Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as an anchor. I also show that the small Milky Way
(MW) Cepheid sample with accurate parallax measurements leads to a distance to
NGC 4258 that is in tension with the maser distance. I conclude that H0 based
on the NGC 4258 maser distance is H0 = 70.6 +/- 3.3 km/s/Mpc compatible within
1 sigma with the recent determination from Planck for the base six-parameter
LCDM cosmology. If the H-band period-luminosity relation is assumed to be
independent of metallicity and the three distance anchors are combined, I find
H0 = 72.5 +/- 2.5 km/s/Mpc, which differs by 1.9 sigma from the Planck value.
The differences between the Planck results and these estimates of H0 are not
large enough to provide compelling evidence for new physics at this stage.Comment: 14 page

As national and local economies become more globalized, many rural areas are going to find it more difficult to compete for private capital investments. A traditional tool, modifications to tax policy, of state and local governments will not be as effective (for many communities it has never been effective) in the future. These communities will need to seek other avenues of growth.
