Incentive Mechanisms for Participatory Sensing: Survey and Research Challenges
Participatory sensing is a powerful paradigm which takes advantage of
smartphones to collect and analyze data beyond the scale of what was previously
possible. Given that participatory sensing systems rely completely on the
users' willingness to submit up-to-date and accurate information, it is
paramount to effectively incentivize users' active and reliable participation.
In this paper, we survey existing literature on incentive mechanisms for
participatory sensing systems. In particular, we present a taxonomy of existing
incentive mechanisms for participatory sensing systems, which are subsequently
discussed in depth by comparing and contrasting different approaches. Finally,
we discuss an agenda of open research challenges in incentivizing users in

Mechanisms for improving information quality in smartphone crowdsensing systems
Given its potential for a large variety of real-life applications, smartphone crowdsensing has recently gained tremendous attention from the research community. Smartphone crowdsensing is a paradigm that allows ordinary citizens to participate in large-scale sensing surveys by using user-friendly applications installed in their smartphones. In this way, fine-grained sensing information is obtained from smartphone users without employing fixed and expensive infrastructure, and with negligible maintenance costs.
Existing smartphone sensing systems depend completely on the participants\u27 willingness to submit up-to-date and accurate information regarding the events being monitored. Therefore, it becomes paramount to scalably and effectively determine, enforce, and optimize the information quality of the sensing reports submitted by the participants. To this end, mechanisms to improve information quality in smartphone crowdsensing systems were designed in this work. Firstly, the FIRST framework is presented, which is a reputation-based mechanism that leverages the concept of mobile trusted participants to determine and improve the information quality of collected data. Secondly, it is mathematically modeled and studied the problem of maximizing the likelihood of successful execution of sensing tasks when participants having uncertain mobility execute sensing tasks. Two incentive mechanisms based on game and auction theory are then proposed to efficiently and scalably solve such problem. CENTURION: Incentivizing Multi-Requester Mobile Crowd Sensing
The recent proliferation of increasingly capable mobile devices has given
rise to mobile crowd sensing (MCS) systems that outsource the collection of
sensory data to a crowd of participating workers that carry various mobile
devices. Aware of the paramount importance of effectively incentivizing
participation in such systems, the research community has proposed a wide
variety of incentive mechanisms. However, different from most of these existing
mechanisms which assume the existence of only one data requester, we consider
MCS systems with multiple data requesters, which are actually more common in
practice. Specifically, our incentive mechanism is based on double auction, and
is able to stimulate the participation of both data requesters and workers. In
real practice, the incentive mechanism is typically not an isolated module, but
interacts with the data aggregation mechanism that aggregates workers' data.
For this reason, we propose CENTURION, a novel integrated framework for
multi-requester MCS systems, consisting of the aforementioned incentive and
data aggregation mechanism. CENTURION's incentive mechanism satisfies
truthfulness, individual rationality, computational efficiency, as well as
guaranteeing non-negative social welfare, and its data aggregation mechanism
generates highly accurate aggregated results. The desirable properties of
CENTURION are validated through both theoretical analysis and extensive
simulations
Quality of Information in Mobile Crowdsensing: Survey and Research Challenges
Smartphones have become the most pervasive devices in people's lives, and are
clearly transforming the way we live and perceive technology. Today's
smartphones benefit from almost ubiquitous Internet connectivity and come
equipped with a plethora of inexpensive yet powerful embedded sensors, such as
accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone, and camera. This unique combination has
enabled revolutionary applications based on the mobile crowdsensing paradigm,
such as real-time road traffic monitoring, air and noise pollution, crime
control, and wildlife monitoring, just to name a few. Differently from prior
sensing paradigms, humans are now the primary actors of the sensing process,
since they become fundamental in retrieving reliable and up-to-date information
about the event being monitored. As humans may behave unreliably or
maliciously, assessing and guaranteeing Quality of Information (QoI) becomes
more important than ever. In this paper, we provide a new framework for
defining and enforcing the QoI in mobile crowdsensing, and analyze in depth the
current state-of-the-art on the topic. We also outline novel research

PREFERENCE-AWARE TASK ASSIGNMENT IN MOBILE CROWDSENSING
Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) is an emerging form of crowdsourcing, which facilitates the sensing data collection with the help of mobile participants (workers). A central problem in MCS is the assignment of sensing tasks to workers. Existing work in the field mostly seek a system-level optimization of task assignments (e.g., maximize the number of completed tasks, minimize the total distance traveled by workers) without considering individual preferences of task requesters and workers. However, users may be reluctant to participate in MCS campaigns that disregard their preferences. In this dissertation, we argue that user preferences should be a primary concern in the task assignment process for an MCS campaign to be effective, and we develop preference-aware task assignment (PTA) mechanisms for five different MCS settings. Since the PTA problem is computationally hard in most of these settings, we present efficient approximation and heuristic algorithms. Extensive simulations performed on synthetic and real data sets validate our theoretical results, and demonstrate that the proposed algorithms produce near-optimal solutions in terms of preference-awareness, outperforming the state-of-the-art assignment algorithms by a wide margin in most cases
A Stackelberg Game Approach Towards Socially-Aware Incentive Mechanisms for Mobile Crowdsensing (Online report)
Mobile crowdsensing has shown a great potential to address large-scale data
sensing problems by allocating sensing tasks to pervasive mobile users. The
mobile users will participate in a crowdsensing platform if they can receive
satisfactory reward. In this paper, to effectively and efficiently recruit
sufficient number of mobile users, i.e., participants, we investigate an
optimal incentive mechanism of a crowdsensing service provider. We apply a
two-stage Stackelberg game to analyze the participation level of the mobile
users and the optimal incentive mechanism of the crowdsensing service provider
using backward induction. In order to motivate the participants, the incentive
is designed by taking into account the social network effects from the
underlying mobile social domain. For example, in a crowdsensing-based road
traffic information sharing application, a user can get a better and accurate
traffic report if more users join and share their road information. We derive
the analytical expressions for the discriminatory incentive as well as the
uniform incentive mechanisms. To fit into practical scenarios, we further
formulate a Bayesian Stackelberg game with incomplete information to analyze
the interaction between the crowdsensing service provider and mobile users,
where the social structure information (the social network effects) is
uncertain. The existence and uniqueness of the Bayesian Stackelberg equilibrium
are validated by identifying the best response strategies of the mobile users.
Numerical results corroborate the fact that the network effects tremendously
stimulate higher mobile participation level and greater revenue of the
crowdsensing service provider. In addition, the social structure information
