    The Genetic Structure and History of Africans and African Americans.

    Africa is the source of all modern humans, but characterization of genetic variation and of relationships among populations across the continent has been enigmatic. We studied 121 African populations, four African American populations, and 60 non-African populations for patterns of variation at 1327 nuclear microsatellite and insertion/deletion markers. We identified 14 ancestral population clusters in Africa that correlate with self-described ethnicity and shared cultural and/or linguistic properties. We observed high levels of mixed ancestry in most populations, reflecting historical migration events across the continent. Our data also provide evidence for shared ancestry among geographically diverse hunter-gatherer populations (Khoesan speakers and Pygmies). The ancestry of African Americans is predominantly from Niger-Kordofanian (approximately 71%), European (approximately 13%), and other African (approximately 8%) populations, although admixture levels varied considerably among individuals. This study helps tease apart the complex evolutionary history of Africans and African Americans, aiding both anthropological and genetic epidemiologic studies

    Social policies of forest concessionaires in West and Central Africa

    Timber concessions in West and Central Africa have traditionally left a dismal record in terms of social policies that go back to the colonial period, yet these same policies have undergone unprecedented change in a limited number of concessions over the past few years. This paper draws on data primarily collected through interviews with representatives of large groups operating in the region. It describes the myriad ways in which timber concessionaires have devised means of improving the welfare of local populations and their own staff in collaboration with NGOs. In terms of policies towards local populations, several companies have recently begun implementing participatory mapping activities inside concessions so as to locate sites of social, economic and cultural importance to nearby populations. The exercise differs according to the type of population targeted: in the case of sedentary villagers (who are mostly Bantu), mapping generally involves identifying village ranges, known in Frenchspeaking Africa as finages. In the case of semi-nomadic populations, notably Pygmies, the use of the forest, and thus mapping activities, focus much more on identifying certain species found throughout the forest rather than specific geographical zones. In addition, a number of companies have formalized dialogue with local populations by setting up a range of committees that aim to (i) resolve conflicts and (ii) discuss how to allocate social expenditures and deliveries by companies. These include giving food, building or contributing to the running of schools and health posts, and providing populations with facilities such as roads and drinking water supplies. These same firms have also sought to improve the living and working conditions of their own staff.     Genome-wide SNP analysis of Southern African populations provides new insights into the dispersal of Bantu-speaking groups

    The expansion of Bantu-speaking agropastoralist populations had a great impact on the genetic, linguistic, and cultural variation of sub-Saharan Africa. It is generally accepted that Bantu languages originated in an area around the present border between Cameroon and Nigeria approximately 5,000 years ago, from where they spread South and East becoming the largest African linguistic branch. The demic consequences of this event are reflected in the relatively high genetic homogeneity observed across most of sub-Saharan Africa populations. In this work, we explored genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism data from 28 populations to characterize the genetic components present in sub-Saharan African populations. Combining novel data from four Southern African populations with previously published results, we reject the hypothesis that the "non-Bantu" genetic component reported in South-Eastern Africa (Mozambique) reflects extensive gene flow between incoming agriculturalist and resident hunter-gatherer communities. We alternatively suggest that this novel component is the result of demographic dynamics associated with the Bantu dispersal

    This article is a case study of a simple online course created jointly by a mission agency and small university. It demonstrates how open source course management technology has been used to create a true sense of community among students from a variety of cultural backgrounds and locations. The content of the course was delivered through a blending of open source technology and self-directed adult learning facilitated through online dialog, which in turned engendered multi-cultural, respectful virtual community. Information is shared to enable others to obtain low-cost technological help for setting up other individual courses in Moodle

    The Missing Link of Jewish European Ancestry: Contrasting the Rhineland and the Khazarian Hypotheses

    The question of Jewish ancestry has been the subject of controversy for over two centuries and has yet to be resolved. The "Rhineland Hypothesis" proposes that Eastern European Jews emerged from a small group of German Jews who migrated eastward and expanded rapidly. Alternatively, the "Khazarian Hypothesis" suggests that Eastern European descended from Judean tribes who joined the Khazars, an amalgam of Turkic clans that settled the Caucasus in the early centuries CE and converted to Judaism in the 8th century. The Judaized Empire was continuously reinforced with Mesopotamian and Greco-Roman Jews until the 13th century. Following the collapse of their empire, the Judeo-Khazars fled to Eastern Europe. The rise of European Jewry is therefore explained by the contribution of the Judeo-Khazars. Thus far, however, their contribution has been estimated only empirically; the absence of genome-wide data from Caucasus populations precluded testing the Khazarian Hypothesis. Recent sequencing of modern Caucasus populations prompted us to revisit the Khazarian Hypothesis and compare it with the Rhineland Hypothesis. We applied a wide range of population genetic analyses - including principal component, biogeographical origin, admixture, identity by descent, allele sharing distance, and uniparental analyses - to compare these two hypotheses. Our findings support the Khazarian Hypothesis and portray the European Jewish genome as a mosaic of Caucasus, European, and Semitic ancestries, thereby consolidating previous contradictory reports of Jewish ancestry.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, 7 supplementary figures, 7 supplementary table

    The dataset contains findings and information from 51 seroprevelance studies performed from on samples collected from 1961 to 2016. These investigated 84 exposure-defined subgroups of subjects reported to have had no symptoms of EVD during the outbreak period, or to have come from populations with no known outbreaks. The data covers more than 44,000 people. The dataset records the sample locations, exposure type, numbers investigated, number/% considered positive and the cut-off used to define positivity. The data comes from a systematic review of published papers: DOI/PMCID?PMIDs are recorded.     Interdisciplinary approach to the demography of Jamaica

    <p>Background: The trans-Atlantic slave trade dramatically changed the demographic makeup of the New World, with varying regions of the African coast exploited differently over roughly a 400 year period. When compared to the discrete mitochondrial haplotype distribution of historically appropriate source populations, the unique distribution within a specific source population can prove insightful in estimating the contribution of each population. Here, we analyzed the first hypervariable region of mitochondrial DNA in a sample from the Caribbean island of Jamaica and compared it to aggregated populations in Africa divided according to historiographically defined segments of the continent's coastline. The results from these admixture procedures were then compared to the wealth of historic knowledge surrounding the disembarkation of Africans on the island.</p> <p>Results: In line with previous findings, the matriline of Jamaica is almost entirely of West African descent. Results from the admixture analyses suggest modern Jamaicans share a closer affinity with groups from the Gold Coast and Bight of Benin despite high mortality, low fecundity, and waning regional importation. The slaves from the Bight of Biafra and West-central Africa were imported in great numbers; however, the results suggest a deficit in expected maternal contribution from those regions.</p> <p>Conclusions: When considering the demographic pressures imposed by chattel slavery on Jamaica during the slave era, the results seem incongruous. Ethnolinguistic and ethnographic evidence, however, may explain the apparent non-random levels of genetic perseverance. The application of genetics may prove useful in answering difficult demographic questions left by historically voiceless groups.</p&gt

    Extractive Industries and the Social Dimension of Sustainable Development: Reflection on the Chad-Cameroon Pipeline

    With the elaboration and diffusion of the concept of sustainable development, various projects have been defined as ‘sustainable’, even though they do not necessarily differ from what they would have been otherwise. Even extractive industries' activities, traditionally considered as both environmentally and socially harmful, have endorsed the sustainable development idea. We discuss the reasons why the Chad–Cameroon pipeline project, which aimed at being a ‘model’ project, did not meet the expectations in terms of sustainable development, putting the emphasis on its social dimension. Focusing on the World Bank, which played a key role in the implementation of the project, we critically examine the adoption of preventive measures, the identification of vulnerable populations and the level of participation of local populations. We argue that economic objectives still prevail over other considerations, and we question the very nature of the project as a (sustainable) development project.
