Reproducing reality. Recreating bonding defects observed in transparent poly(methyl methacrylate) museum objects and assessing defect formation

The most common method chosen by artists, designers, and craftsmen to realize artworks and objects with transparent poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is to bond pieces from premanufactured sheets using solvents or adhesives. This method is considered relatively easy to use, however achieving bonds that are both transparent and strong can be difficult. Artifacts from museum collections made by bonding transparent PMMA often exhibit a variety of bonding defects and failures not yet addressed in depth in the conservation literature. Therefore, an international project started with the aims of classifying these bonding issues and understand their causes. This paper presents the results of the first part of this project which included the following research activities: surveys of bonding defects in PMMA artworks and design objects in museum collections, a literature review of the most recommended materials and methods used to bond PMMA over time, the preparation of bonded PMMA mock-ups based on literature review, chemical characterization of the bonding materials, thermal ageing of mock-ups, and finally technical examinations of the PMMA bonded mock-ups. The main defects observed in the museum objects surveyed were successfully recreated in the lab and the causes of their formation were assessed

An implementation of four of Ledgard\u27s mini-languages

For decades humans have been searching for the test way to communicate with an intelligent machine, a computer. Several programming languages have been written with the idea of a universal language have been written with the idea of a universal language which includes solutions to solve as many problems as one can think of. Put the more universal the languages are the more complex they are to study. Henery Ledgard tried to combine these two ideas together. He suggests the idea of studying programming language by dealing with a few key features at a time. He separated the various programming features. grouped the similar ones together and wrote his own small languages called Mini-languages . The programming language landscape\u27 (15) which includes 13 mini-languages was used as the central reference for this thesis work. Each of the four mini-languages was implemented in 2 sections; a compiler and an interpreter. One can write a program in any of the four mini-languages; compile and run (interpret) it to test the correctness

    Algebraic models for rational G-spectra

In this thesis we present two themes. Firstly, for a compact Lie group G, we work with the category of Continuous Weyl Toral Modules (CWTMG), where objects are sheaves of Q modules over a G topological category TCG whose object space consists of the closed subgroups of G. It is believed that an algebraic model for rational G equivariant spectra (for any compact Lie group G) will be of the form of CWTMG with some additional structure. We establish a very well behaved monoidal model structure on categories like CWTMG allowing one to do homotopy theory there. We do this by using the fact that there is an injective model structure on the category of chain complexes in a Grothendieck category. Secondly, we provide an algebraic model for rational SO(3) equivariant spectra by using an extensive study of interaction between the restriction – coinduction adjunction and left and right Bousfield localisation. We start by splitting the category of rational SO(3) equivariant spectra into three parts: exceptional, dihedral and cyclic. This splitting allows us to treat every part seperately. Our passage for the exceptional part is monoidal and it is applied to provide a monoidal algebraic model for G rational spectra for any finite G. The passage for the cyclic part is monoidal except for the last Quillen equivalence which simplifies the algebraic model
