    IMI – industry guidelines and ethical considerations for myopia control report

    PURPOSE. To discuss guidelines and ethical considerations associated with the development and prescription of treatments intended for myopia control (MC). METHODS. Critical review of published papers and guidance documents was undertaken, with a view to carefully considering the ethical standards associated with the investigation, development, registration, marketing, prescription, and use of MC treatments. RESULTS. The roles and responsibilities of regulatory bodies, manufacturers, academics, eye care practitioners, and patients in the use of MC treatments are explored. Particular attention is given to the ethical considerations for deciding whether to implement a MC strategy and how to implement this within a clinical trial or practice setting. Finally, the responsibilities in marketing, support, and education required to transfer required knowledge and skills to eye care practitioners and academics are discussed. CONCLUSIONS. Undertaking MC treatment in minors creates an ethical challenge for a wide variety of stakeholders. Regulatory bodies, manufacturers, academics, and clinicians all share an ethical responsibility to ensure that the products used for MC are safe and efficacious and that patients understand the benefits and potential risks of such products. This International Myopia Institute report highlights these ethical challenges and provides stakeholders with recommendations and guidelines in the development, financial support, prescribing, and advertising of such treatments.</p

    A Conceptual UX-aware Model of Requirements

    User eXperience (UX) is becoming increasingly important for success of software products. Yet, many companies still face various challenges in their work with UX. Part of these challenges relate to inadequate knowledge and awareness of UX and that current UX models are commonly not practical nor well integrated into existing Software Engineering (SE) models and concepts. Therefore, we present a conceptual UX-aware model of requirements for software development practitioners. This layered model shows the interrelation between UX and functional and quality requirements. The model is developed based on current models of UX and software quality characteristics. Through the model we highlight the main differences between various requirement types in particular essentially subjective and accidentally subjective quality requirements. We also present the result of an initial validation of the model through interviews with 12 practitioners and researchers. Our results show that the model can raise practitioners' knowledge and awareness of UX in particular in relation to requirement and testing activities.     Imputing unknown competitor marketing activity with a Hidden Markov Chain

    We demonstrate on a case study with two competing products at a bank how one can use a Hidden Markov Chain (HMC) to estimate missing information on a competitor's marketing activity. The idea is that given time series with sales volumes for products A and B and marketing expenditures for product A, as well as suitable predictors of sales for products A and B, we can infer at each point in time whether it is likely or not that marketing activities took place for product B. The method is successful in identifying the presence or absence of marketing activity for product B about 84% of the time. We allude to the issue of whether, if one can infer marketing activity about product B from knowledge of marketing activity for product A and of sales volumes of both products, the reverse might be possible and one might be able to impute marketing activity for product A from knowledge of that of product B. This leads to a concept of symmetric imputation of competing marketing activity. The exposition in this paper aims to be accessible and relevant to practitioners

    Value Creation or Destruction: The Role of Private label in UK Grocery Category Management Decisions

    Category management is a collaborative approach between food manufacturers and retailers to manage product categories rather than individual brands. It operates at both strategic and operational levels and seeks to create value ultimately for the consumer. The paper contributes to the literature and practice. It uses a qualitative interview study of twenty five senior practitioners and explores the role of private label products within UK grocery categories as consumers continue to switch due to lower prices and comparable quality to the traditional brands. The research also examines how private label manufacturers can create value within the category management relationship and how they can aspire to category captainship if they generate retailer specific and differentiated category strategies. The paper accepts its limitations and explains how further research in this important field of retailing is necessary to update the literature and help practitioners navigate their way through turbulent sector change

    Factors Influencing Collaboration Between Academic Researchers And Industry Practitioners For Commercialising Research Product

    In a competitive globalised world, research product commercialisation has been recognised as a new engine for wealth creation of a nation. Malaysia is not lagging behind in the mission of creating wealth and prosperities for the country. However, studies reveal that commercialisation of research product in Malaysia is still not at satisfactory level. One of the reasons is due to the weakness of collaboration between academic researchers and industry practitioners in commercialising research products. As such, this research aimed to investigate factors which influence a collaboration between academic researchers and industry practitioners in commercialising research products. For this purpose, a case study was employed within the context of the Malaysian Technical Universities (MTU) in order to gain an in depth understanding. As a case study requires multiple sources of data collection, a document analysis on Intellectual Property (IP) policies of MTU and interviews session with eight academic researchers and four industry practitioners have been conducted. The findings of this study yielded that four elements were needed in order to achieve collaboration between academic researchers and industry practitioners in commercialising research products; university, academic researcher, industry practitioner and research products. These elements are interdependent in which each role is crucial in complementing others in order to achieve high level of collaboration. The relationship between the elements were shaped by interdependence theory where they are required to promote each other‘s effort. If one element is missing, it would be difficult to achieve the collaboration. The findings were then developed into a framework. This study contributes to the literature by establishing the framework of the factors influencing collaboration between academic researchers and industry practitioners for research products commercialisation. Besides, this study also portrays a comparison of the perceptions from academic researchers and industry practitioners in discovering the real issues of collaboration and factors influencing them in achieving a collaboration in research products commercialisation endeavour. The findings of this study will be able to give valuable insights for academic researchers as well as industry practitioners to plan their strategies in commercialising research products.     The Australian Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology Association (ARATA) responds&nbsp;to the NDIA’s AT Discussion Paper, and advocates that roles for all stakeholders must be considered.&nbsp; • Summary of ARATA\u27s key recommendations arising from the Discussion Paper: 1. Evaluate outcomes from AT provision in trial sites and other systems to inform in the development of procurement and service delivery policy, consumer supports, and continuing professional development. 2. Support practitioners and researchers to validate existing AT service models for use in Australia. 3. Assist ARATA and other key stakeholders to develop a national accreditation system for AT practitioners and suppliers. 4. Investigate and document the roles, activities, and scope of practice of suppliers and peer mentors in AT service delivery, and associated outcomes for AT users. 5. Ensure the coupling of AT devices with appropriate soft technology support for device selection, implementation and review. 6. Investigate the efficacy and potential expansion of existing peer and consumer networking channels. 7. Support research into consumer use of information and decision-making in AT provision. 8.     Grounding knowledge and normative valuation in agent-based action and scientific commitment

    Philosophical investigation in synthetic biology has focused on the knowledge-seeking questions pursued, the kind of engineering techniques used, and on the ethical impact of the products produced. However, little work has been done to investigate the processes by which these epistemological, metaphysical, and ethical forms of inquiry arise in the course of synthetic biology research. An attempt at this work relying on a particular area of synthetic biology will be the aim of this chapter. I focus on the reengineering of metabolic pathways through the manipulation and construction of small DNA-based devices and systems synthetic biology. Rather than focusing on the engineered products or ethical principles that result, I will investigate the processes by which these arise. As such, the attention will be directed to the activities of practitioners, their manipulation of tools, and the use they make of techniques to construct new metabolic devices. Using a science-in-practice approach, I investigate problems at the intersection of science, philosophy of science, and sociology of science. I consider how practitioners within this area of synthetic biology reconfigure biological understanding and ethical categories through active modelling and manipulation of known functional parts, biological pathways for use in the design of microbial machines to solve problems in medicine, technology, and the environment. We might describe this kind of problem-solving as relying on what Helen Longino referred to as “social cognition” or the type of scientific work done within what Hasok Chang calls “systems of practice”. My aim in this chapter will be to investigate the relationship that holds between systems of practice within metabolic engineering research and social cognition. I will attempt to show how knowledge and normative valuation are generated from this particular network of practitioners. In doing so, I suggest that the social nature of scientific inquiry is ineliminable to both knowledge acquisition and ethical evaluations
