Son of a dog
Son of a Dog is inspired by a real-life figure whose exploits captured the Nigerian public imagination in the 1980s. Famously known as Ovbigbo (“The Law”), Lawrence Anini unleashed a nationwide reign of terror against law and order. Set against the backdrop of the political turmoil following the Nigerian civil war, the novel traces Anini’s formative years in menial jobs to his rise to the leadership of a notorious criminal gang. It fuses the established facts of his short meteoric career with my imagined version of his inner life and the contemporary myths that sprung up around his legend. It finally crosses the boundary between the real and the mythic as Lawrence Anini becomes truly invincible and elusive after a lust-struck encounter with a fantastical character. I draw inspiration from the dark visceral fiction of Michael Cisco and Brian Evenson, AyiKwei Armah’s unflinchingly descriptive prose and E.C. Osondu’s sharp contemporary humour

Leituras dialógicas do grotesco : textos contemporâneos do excesso
Além de Das Groteske: Seine Gestaltung in Malerei und
Lendo dialogicamente as
Mikhail Bakhtin is unquestionably a fundamental reference in contemporary linguistic and
literary studies where his Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics has become a landmark in the specific
fields of dialogism and polyphony. Critics regard Rabelais and His World as a ground-breaking
study of the grotesque, only equated with Wolfgang Kayser’s Das Groteske: Seine Gestaltung in
Malerei und Dichtung. My analysis is based mainly on a Bakhtinian view of the grotesque which
is complemented by perspectives more directly related with the fields in question,
postcolonialism and women’s literature. Among these are counted Mary Russo, Martha
Reineke, Julia Kristeva and René Girard’s studies. The dialogical readings of the selected texts
by Githa Hariharan, Salman Rushdie, Robert Coover, Ben Okri and Angela Carter reveal that
the grotesque is not only a philosophy and aesthetic abounding in postcolonial and women’s
literature but also that it is a political tool and a powerful intervention force in the ongoing
process of changing mentalities
Copy(write): Intellectual Property in the Writing Classroom
The editors of Copy(write): Intellectual Property in the Writing Classroom bring together stories, theories, and research that can further inform the ways in which we situate and address intellectual property issues in our writing classrooms. The essays in the collection identify and describe a wide range of pedagogical strategies, consider theories, present research, explore approaches, and offer both cautionary tales and local and contextual successes that can further inform the ways in which we situate and address intellectual property issues in our teaching.https://digitalcommons.liberty.edu/textbooks/1003/thumbnail.jp

Major Total Conversion in English: The Question of Directionality
This research investigates the directionality of major total conversion
in English, where major total conversion is defined as the process and at the
same time as the result of deriving a new lexical item by altering the part of
speech of the base without marking the alteration overtly, as in the
presumed pair dry – to dry. The question is whether there is a reliable
strategy for deciding which member of a pair is the base and which member
is the converted counterpart. Various attempts had been made to resolve the
controversial directional issue, but the results have been inconsistent.
The investigation aims to discover whether or not there exists a
coherent notion about how to decide directionality by considering four factors
assumed in the literature to reflect directionality. A large corpus of potential
examples of major total conversion was collected to act as test materials.
The four factors were compared for each major total conversion pair to see
to what extent there was agreement among them.
Results showed the factors did not agree to the expected extent. The
findings are discussed in detail and it is claimed the inconsistencies can
often be explained with recourse to a few general principles.
In conclusion, on the whole the four factors considered are consistent
with one another. In other words, the notion about how to determine
directionality in major total conversion is coherent and can be maintained for

Compact Anthology of World Literature II: Volumes 4, 5, and 6
The Compact Anthology of World Literature, Parts 4, 5, and 6 is designed as an e-book to be accessible on a variety of devices: smart phone, tablet, e-reader, laptop, or desktop computer. Students have reported ease of accessibility and readability on all these devices. To access the ePub text on a laptop, desktop, or tablet, you will need to download a program through which you can read the text. We recommend Readium, an application available through Google. If you plan to read the text on an Android device, you will need to download an application called Lithium from the App Store. On an iPhone, the text will open in iBooks. Affordable Learning Georgia has also converted the .epub files to PDF. Because .epub does not easily convert to other formats, the left margin of the .pdf is very narrow. ALG recommends using the .epub version.
Although the text is designed to look like an actual book, the Table of Contents is composed of hyperlinks that will take you to each introductory section and then to each text. The three parts of the text are organized into the following units:
Part 4—The Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
Unit I: The Age of Reason
Unit II: The Near East and Asia
Part 5—The Long Nineteenth Century
Unit I Romanticism
Unit II Realism
Part 6—The Twentieth Century and Contemporary Literature
Unit I Modernism
Unit II Postcolonial Literature
Unit III Contemporary Literature
Texts from a variety of genres and cultures are included in each unit. Additionally, each selection or collection includes a brief introduction about the author and text(s), and each includes 3 – 5 discussion questions. Texts in the public domain--those published or translated before 1923--are replicated here. Texts published or translated after 1923 are not yet available in the public domain. In those cases, we have provided a link to a stable site that includes the text. Thus, in Part 6, most of the texts are accessible in the form of links to outside sites. In every case, we have attempted to connect to the most stable links available.
