Knowledge-aware Complementary Product Representation Learning
Learning product representations that reflect complementary relationship
plays a central role in e-commerce recommender system. In the absence of the
product relationships graph, which existing methods rely on, there is a need to
detect the complementary relationships directly from noisy and sparse customer
purchase activities. Furthermore, unlike simple relationships such as
similarity, complementariness is asymmetric and non-transitive. Standard usage
of representation learning emphasizes on only one set of embedding, which is
problematic for modelling such properties of complementariness. We propose
using knowledge-aware learning with dual product embedding to solve the above
challenges. We encode contextual knowledge into product representation by
multi-task learning, to alleviate the sparsity issue. By explicitly modelling
with user bias terms, we separate the noise of customer-specific preferences
from the complementariness. Furthermore, we adopt the dual embedding framework
to capture the intrinsic properties of complementariness and provide geometric
interpretation motivated by the classic separating hyperplane theory. Finally,
we propose a Bayesian network structure that unifies all the components, which
also concludes several popular models as special cases. The proposed method
compares favourably to state-of-art methods, in downstream classification and
recommendation tasks. We also develop an implementation that scales efficiently

University-Based Knowledge Product Outsourcing Model
Outsourcing is not new in this ever changing world. It refers to the process of subcontracting a process, such as product design or manufacturing, to a third-party company. Today, the IT outsourcing industry has matured. This paper highlights about outsourcing with emphasis on its scope of operation, importance and impact in the business process and industry in general. This paper describes the unique approach in a university-based knowledge product outsourcing. It presents a discussion on the different resources in the operation and management of the university-based knowledge enterprise. The inception stage in the development of the outsourcing model is also described in this paper. The outsourcing process model presented in this paper highlights the following: faculty and staff as the knowledge provider, infrastructure as the outsourcing facility, business sector as the knowledge seeker, University-based as the business process, and product cost and income as the sharing of limited practice of profession. SOFTWARE ENTREPRENEURSHIP: KNOWLEDGE NETWORKS AND PERFORMANCE OF SOFTWARE VENTURES IN CHINA AND RUSSIA
This study examines the impact of entrepreneurs’ network structure and knowledge homogeneity/heterogeneity of their network members on product development, and revenue growth of software ventures in China and Russia. The empirical data are composed of structured interviews with 159 software entrepreneurs in Beijing and Moscow. The study found that structural holes and knowledge heterogeneity affect positively product diversity in interactive ways. The study also found that knowledge homogeneity accelerates product development. Product development speed enhances revenue growth in the long term. However, the combination of speed with dense and homogeneous networks harms revenue growth over time. The effects of structural holes and knowledge heterogeneity on product diversity and revenue growth over time are more salient in Russia due to the unique institutional, social, and cultural conditions present in the country.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/40137/3/wp751.pd
Building dynamic capabilities in product development: the role of knowledge management
This paper contributes to the clarification of the connections between knowledge management and dynamic capabilities in the context of product development to see how they explain product development competences. Building on the knowledge management and dynamic capabilities literatures, the paper argues that the social side of knowledge management has a role to play as enabler of dynamic capabilities in the context of product development. Framework for product knowledge and product related knowledge which supports product modelling for mass customization
Knowledge Communication in Product Development Projects
During the last decades, a number of studies have been concerned with com-munication related to new product development. These have looked at either intra-organizational communication between departments or communication between new product development teams and external stakeholders such as customers or suppliers. Only little research, however, has combined internal and external stakeholder communication and explored the role of technology uncertainty on communication. The purpose of this study is to examine how technology uncertainty affects project manager communication behavior during new product development. We carried out an embedded case study of a major NPD project in the automation industry. The findings indicate that technology uncertainty is positively related to communication frequency between project manager and project stakeholders during the early phase of NPD project. In addition we found a negative association between technology uncertainty and the breadth and depth of communication between project manager and stakeholders in early phase of the NPD project. These findings indicate that under high technology uncertainty, managers of NPD projects modify their communication behavior not only with respect to how frequently they communicate with stakeholders, but also to which stakeholders they communicate and how deeply they engage different stakeholders in different phases of the new product development project.
Impacts of Incoming Knowledge on Product Innovation: Technology Transfer in Auto-related Industries in Developing Economies
This paper studies two questions on the role of networked sources of knowledge influential to product innovation. First: What is the extent of technology transferred through vertical linkages and public-private alliances, including university-industry linkages, in the phase of product improvement and development? Second: What types of knowledge are transferred from external technology sources? In a sample of ASEAN firms’ self-reported partner data restricted to automotive related industries, we found that direct linkages with MNC customers in foreign countries resulted in a lower propensity of product innovation. Indeed, incoming knowledge from MNC customers relating to the management of quality of existing products especially explained the lower propensity of product innovation. We also found that production linkages with MNC suppliers in foreign countries resulted in a higher propensity of product innovation. Incoming knowledge from MNC suppliers about quality controls explained a lower propensity of product innovation. These findings empirically indicate that networked sources of knowledge have a significant influence trade-off between maintaining existing operations and developing new products. The impacts of public-private alliances on innovation are sizable compared with the impacts of vertical linkages. Public-private alliances and vertical linkages offer knowledge with different effects on product innovation.
Imputing unknown competitor marketing activity with a Hidden Markov Chain
We demonstrate on a case study with two competing products at a bank how one
can use a Hidden Markov Chain (HMC) to estimate missing information on a
competitor's marketing activity. The idea is that given time series with sales
volumes for products A and B and marketing expenditures for product A, as well
as suitable predictors of sales for products A and B, we can infer at each
point in time whether it is likely or not that marketing activities took place
for product B. The method is successful in identifying the presence or absence
of marketing activity for product B about 84% of the time. We allude to the
issue of whether, if one can infer marketing activity about product B from
knowledge of marketing activity for product A and of sales volumes of both
products, the reverse might be possible and one might be able to impute
marketing activity for product A from knowledge of that of product B. This
leads to a concept of symmetric imputation of competing marketing activity. The
