AI approaches to understand human deceptions, perceptions, and perspectives in social media

Social media platforms have created virtual space for sharing user generated information, connecting, and interacting among users. However, there are research and societal challenges: 1) The users are generating and sharing the disinformation 2) It is difficult to understand citizens\u27 perceptions or opinions expressed on wide variety of topics; and 3) There are overloaded information and echo chamber problems without overall understanding of the different perspectives taken by different people or groups. This dissertation addresses these three research challenges with advanced AI and Machine Learning approaches. To address the fake news, as deceptions on the facts, this dissertation presents Machine Learning approaches for fake news detection models, and a hybrid method for topic identification, whether they are fake or real. To understand the user\u27s perceptions or attitude toward some topics, this study analyzes the sentiments expressed in social media text. The sentiment analysis of posts can be used as an indicator to measure how topics are perceived by the users and how their perceptions as a whole can affect decision makers in government and industry, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is difficult to measure the public perception of government policies issued during the pandemic. The citizen responses to the government policies are diverse, ranging from security or goodwill to confusion, fear, or anger. This dissertation provides a near real-time approach to track and monitor public reactions toward government policies by continuously collecting and analyzing Twitter posts about the COVID-19 pandemic. To address the social media\u27s overwhelming number of posts, content echo-chamber, and information isolation issue, this dissertation provides a multiple view-based summarization framework where the same contents can be summarized according to different perspectives. This framework includes components of choosing the perspectives, and advanced text summarization approaches. The proposed approaches in this dissertation are demonstrated with a prototype system to continuously collect Twitter data about COVID-19 government health policies and provide analysis of citizen concerns toward the policies, and the data is analyzed for fake news detection and for generating multiple-view summaries

A Novel Spatiotemporal Prediction Method of Cumulative Covid-19 Cases

    Get PDF
Prediction methods are important for many applications. In particular, an accurate prediction for the total number of cases for pandemics such as the Covid-19 pandemic could help medical preparedness by providing in time a sufficient supply of testing kits, hospital beds and medical personnel. This thesis experimentally compares the accuracy of ten prediction methods for the cumulative number of Covid-19 pandemic cases. These ten methods include two types of neural networks and extrapolation methods based on best fit linear, best fit quadratic, best fit cubic and Lagrange interpolation, as well as an extrapolation method from Revesz. We also consider the Kriging and inverse distance weighting spatial interpolation methods. We also develop a novel spatiotemporal prediction method by combining the Best fit linear and IDW. The experiments show that among these ten prediction methods, the spatiotemporal method has the smallest root mean square error and mean absolute error on Covid-19 cumulative data for counties in New York State between June and July, 2020. Democratising data science : effective use of data by communities for civic participation, advocacy and action

PhD ThesisWe live in an age of data, where it is being collected and archived in tremendous volumes and at great velocity. Smart cities are a good example of how we generate and use data with the aim of improving the lives of citizens. Cities adopting more technologies and embedding them in the physical fabric of the city will drastically change the way decisions are made in the city, in addition to the way citizens interact with the city. Research to date has predominantly focused on engineering agendas or has narrowly focused on citizens’ participation as passive producers of data in the smart city. This thesis takes a more holistic approach by focusing on both the engineering problem-solving agenda and community problem-solving activities. Taking a participatory research approach, the thesis explores such a context through three case studies that involve the design, development and analysis of two Community Informatics (CI) systems. In addition to producing two open-source CI technologies (SenseMyStreet and Data:In Place) for active citizen participation, this study posits a Citizen Advocacy Framework and Community-Data Interaction (CDI) model as novel theoretical framings that enable researchers to discuss and design for the effective use of data by communities. Furthermore, this thesis provides a practical example of the use of CDI for supporting communities to take local action. This improved understanding of the relationship between data and communities demonstrates a better direction for future research and the design of CI technologies as they work towards democratising data science and enabling the effective use of data by communities for active civic participation, advocacy and action

Supporting pro-amateur composers using digital audio workstations

This thesis investigates the activity of pro-amateur composers in order to identify possible design improvements to a category of composition software called digital audio workstations. Pro-amateur composers are composers who are not full-time professional musicians but who have a considerably greater level of expertise than amateurs. In contrast to the collaborative settings that this group is normally studied in this thesis will focus on situations where pro-amateur composers work independently. Existing research on the use of composition software is reviewed, revealing that the composition process can involve a wide variety of component activities and overarching macro structures, and that other aids are often used in addition to composition software. Studies have also indicated that the design of composition software may constrain the creativity of composers. Four important considerations are identified for studying composers: triangulating multiple data capture methods, avoiding study designs that constrain what activities can be observed, capturing use of any external aids, and studying the use of a variety of composition software (or a prototype design) to mitigate any constraints that are due to the software's design. Four pro-amateur composers were observed composing in their usual environments using a methodology based on interaction analysis. Based on information recorded about the settings, artefacts used, and activities carried out, three major patterns are observed. Firstly, existing tools support different composition activities to varying degrees, with additional support needed for improvisation, reflection, and auditioning incompletely specified material; secondly, composers make coordinated use of multiple representations; and finally, composers make use of strategies that enable selective allocation of time and effort (habituation, limited exploration, and self-constraining). Previous authors have used many different notions of external cognition when studying the use of composition software. A literature review of such studies identifies techniques that can be applied to improve the representations used in composition software. Seven techniques are described: selective representation, diverse media types, structured representations, incomplete specification, representing alternatives, task lists, and representing history. A detailed review of evidence from the literature and the observational study is used to identify implementation suggestions for each technique. The technique of task lists has been studied significantly less in the literature on composition software and appears to be a fruitful avenue for further exploration. A prototype to-do list website designed for coordinated use with Ableton Live is created to further investigate the task lists technique by studying how it is used by five pro-amateur composers. Using thematic analysis of interviews triangulated with video recordings and logs, four main themes are identified: using to-do lists to plan and focus, changing to-do list items over time, organising to-do lists, and applicability of to-do lists. Seven key patterns of activity that are enabled by task lists are also described: planning activity, journalling activity, interleaving activities, reflection, organising the to-do list, idea capture, and collaboration. Task lists appear to be useful because explicitly representing tasks, processes, and plans helps the composer to consider those subjects; and also because task lists ease many related activities, such as tracking incomplete work, monitoring deviation from a planned creative direction, or identifying and re-using useful strategies. Two important considerations for design of task lists in DAWs are identified: how task lists are integrated with the DAW, and how to increase the visibility of the composer's activity. For both considerations, specific suggestions are made for how these could be achieved

Over the past decade, thousands of programs and projects around the world have worked to open data and use it to address a myriad of social and economic challenges. Meanwhile, issues related to data rights and privacy have moved to the centre of public and political discourse. As the open data movement enters a new phase in its evolution, shifting to target real-world problems and embed open data thinking into other existing or emerging communities of practice, big questions still remain. How will open data initiatives respond to new concerns about privacy, inclusion, and artificial intelligence? And what can we learn from the last decade in order to deliver impact where it is most needed? The State of Open Data brings together over 60 authors from around the world to address these questions and to take stock of the real progress made to date across sectors and around the world, uncovering the issues that will shape the future of open data in the years to come.
