The conservation of Buddhist sculptures that were transferred to Europe at some point during their lifetime raises numerous questions: while these objects historically served a religious, devotional purpose, many of them currently belong to museums or private collections, where they are detached from their original context and often adapted to western taste. A scientific study was carried out to address questions from Museo d'Arte Orientale of Turin curators in terms of whether these artifacts might be forgeries or replicas, and how they may have transformed over time. Several analytical techniques were used for materials identification and to study the production technique, ultimately aiming to discriminate the original materials from those added within later interventions

The Quest to End Human Trafficking: An Educational and Practical Guide for Everyone Who Wants to Help Break the Bonds and Assist Survivors

People often assume that only legislators and law enforcement personnel can take meaningful steps to fight human trafficking, one of the most lucrative transnational crimes in the world. This inquiry sought to assess the validity of that belief. The study was informed by the author’s experience as a college instructor of human trafficking and the inspiration he drew from the range and quality of his students’ projects. The methodology included examining the strategies that governmental and non-governmental organizations are using to fight trafficking and assist survivors. It also considered the work of individual activists and service providers such as social workers and health/mental health professionals. Business allies selected for review included convenience store managers and those in the lodging, tourism, airline, and transportation industries. Community influencers such as public officials, members of the press, spiritual leaders, and college instructors were studied as well. The research demonstrated that each group is making a valuable contribution. The analysis first summarizes major concepts and laws that every antitrafficking activist needs to know. The author then organized the insights and lessons learned into five types of activities: Awareness, political advocacy, prevention, reducing demand (shopping wisely), and survivor intervention/aftercare. A separate discussion focused on ideas for student service projects, internships, and relevant career opportunities. The concluding chapters offer an easy-to-follow game plan for anyone interested in joining the cause. Altogether, the Guide has more than 1,100 hyperlinks to articles and free resources that advocates can use to pursue their personal antitrafficking interests and priorities

Vernacular architecture, tangible and intangible heritage of great importance to European and global culture, represents the response of a society culturally linked to its territory, in terms of climate and landscape. Its construction features are born from the practical experience of the inhabitants, making use of local materials, taking into consideration geographical conditions and cultural, social and constructive traditions, based on the conditions of the surrounding nature and habitat. Above all, it plays an essential role in contemporary society as it is able to teach us important principles and lessons for a respectful sustainable architecture. Vernacular Heritage: Culture, People and Sustainability will be a valuable source of information for academics and professionals in the fields of Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Construction and Building Engineering and ArchitectureMileto, C.; Vegas López-Manzanares, F.; Cristini, V.; García Soriano, L. Examining childhood trauma and comorbid mental disorders among people with opioid use disorder

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is characterised by persistent opioid use despite the experience of harm. Current literature suggests that childhood trauma and mental disorders are risk factors for illicit OUD. However, little is known about the effects of childhood trauma and mental disorders on OUD-related harm. Our understanding of this relationship is also limited by imprecise childhood trauma and mental disorder prevalence data; few studies on people prescribed opioids for chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP); and a lack of research on interventions that reduce harm related to childhood trauma and mental disorders among people with OUD. This thesis uses multiple study methods on data from several different opioid-using populations to broaden our understanding of the relationship between childhood trauma, mental disorders, and OUD. The studies in this thesis aimed to 1) estimate the prevalence of specific childhood trauma types and mental disorders among people with OUD; 2) investigate childhood trauma as an independent risk factor for OUD among a large sample of people prescribed opioids for CNCP; 3) explore the effects of childhood trauma and mental disorders on OAT engagement, crime, and mortality among people with illicit OUD; and 4) examine the associations between OAT and causes of mortality, including suicide, among people with OUD. Multiple key findings emerged from this thesis. The first two studies confirmed that people with OUD experience childhood trauma and mental disorders at far higher rates than the general population. The third study of people prescribed opioids for CNCP found that childhood trauma independently increased the risk of OUD after controlling for mental disorders and other known OUD risk factors. The fourth study found that childhood trauma and most mental disorders were related to poorer OAT engagement and higher criminal offending rates among people with OUD. The fifth study, a systematic review and meta-analysis, found that OAT was associated with reduced risk of multiple causes of mortality, including suicide, among people with OUD. Findings from these studies highlight the importance of addressing childhood trauma and mental disorders in both the treatment of OUD and the management of CNCP with pharmaceutical opioids. The results can inform clinical guidelines, policy, and future research that impact people with OUD and those prescribed opioids for CNCP

Graphs behind data: A network-based approach to model different scenarios

Nowadays, the amount and variety of scenarios that can benefit from techniques for extracting and managing knowledge from raw data have dramatically increased. As a result, the search for models capable of ensuring the representation and management of highly heterogeneous data is a hot topic in the data science literature. In this thesis, we aim to propose a solution to address this issue. In particular, we believe that graphs, and more specifically complex networks, as well as the concepts and approaches associated with them, can represent a solution to the problem mentioned above. In fact, we believe that they can be a unique and unifying model to uniformly represent and handle extremely heterogeneous data. Based on this premise, we show how the same concepts and/or approach has the potential to address different open issues in different contexts. INGEGNERIA DELL'INFORMAZIONEopenVirgili, Luc
