Background: The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence, distribution and association of developmental alteration in tooth number with gender, location, and presence of delayed eruption of tooth among children who attended to Student's polyclinic of IIUM Kuantan, Malaysia. Methods: A cross sectional study on total 727 Orthopanthomograms (OPGs) of 3-17 years old children from April 2009 to July 2012. OPGs with presence of alteration number were scrutinized to find out the prevalence, distribution and association. The data was analyzed comparing gender, location and presence of delayed eruption and tested using Chi-square test. Results: Out of 727 OPGs, 71 OPGs showed developmental alteration in tooth number. The prevalence was 98/1000 OPGs within 3 years. Among those 71 OPGs, the gender differences were: males (49.3%) and females (50.7%). Locations were found in maxilla (45.1%), mandible (40.8%) and both (14.0%). The finding of delayed eruption was (7.0%). There were significant differences between alteration in tooth number with location as (p<0.05) while there were no significant differences with gender and delayed eruption as (p>0.05). Conclusions: This study showed that hyperdontia was considerably lower than hypodontia. There was association between alteration in tooth number with location, but no association with gender and delayed eruption

    No full text
Using recently available survey data for Tajikistan, this paper investigates changes in the pattern of maternal health care over the last decade, and the extent to which inequalities in access to that care have emerged. In particular, the link between poverty, women's education status and the utilisation of maternal health services is investigated. The results demonstrate a significant decline in the use of maternal health services in Tajikistan since independence, as well as changes in the location of delivery and type of person providing assistance, with a clear shift away from giving birth in a health facility toward giving birth at home. Over two-fifths of all women who gave birth in the year prior to the survey in 1999 had a home delivery. There are clear differences in access by socio-economic status with women from the poorest quintile being three times more likely to experience a home delivery with no trained assistance than women from the richest quintile

Towards Automatic Lesion Classification in the Upper Aerodigestive Tract Using OCT and Deep Transfer Learning Methods

Early detection of cancer is crucial for treatment and overall patient survival. In the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) the gold standard for identification of malignant tissue is an invasive biopsy. Recently, non-invasive imaging techniques such as confocal laser microscopy and optical coherence tomography (OCT) have been used for tissue assessment. In particular, in a recent study experts classified lesions in the UADT with respect to their invasiveness using OCT images only. As the results were promising, automatic classification of lesions might be feasible which could assist experts in their decision making. Therefore, we address the problem of automatic lesion classification from OCT images. This task is very challenging as the available dataset is extremely small and the data quality is limited. However, as similar issues are typical in many clinical scenarios we study to what extent deep learning approaches can still be trained and used for decision support.Comment: Accepted for publication at CARS 201

This study of health insurance systems in Zaire was carried out as part of a larger program of initiatives designed to improve the sustainability of health care systems and increase the health status of the Zairian population. This paper presents the objectives of the study and a discussion of the economic aspects of health insurance, background information about the health sector and health financing systems in Zaire and highlights of previous related work. The major motivations for this study were: (a) to provide information for the ongoing social sector adjustment dialogue in Zaire; and (b) to serve as a case study in the World Bank's Region Study of Health Finance. Specifically, the study sought to document different types of insurance systems in Zaire, and to conduct in-depth case studies of several schemes. The in-depth case studies presented in this report evaluate the design, management operational efficiency of four health insurance programs from both rural and urban areas. The case studies also attempt to analyze the effects of insurance on equity of access, utilization of health care services, and mobilization of financial resources for the health sector. From these analyses, the report draws conclusions about the advantages and disadvantages of health insurance programs as a means of financing health care services in Zaire, and suggests avenues for future research, policy, and programming initiatives.Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Insurance Law,Health Economics&Finance,Insurance&Risk Mitigation,Health Systems Development&Reform
