Multiphoton Quantum Optics and Quantum State Engineering
We present a review of theoretical and experimental aspects of multiphoton
quantum optics. Multiphoton processes occur and are important for many aspects
of matter-radiation interactions that include the efficient ionization of atoms
and molecules, and, more generally, atomic transition mechanisms;
system-environment couplings and dissipative quantum dynamics; laser physics,
optical parametric processes, and interferometry. A single review cannot
account for all aspects of such an enormously vast subject. Here we choose to
concentrate our attention on parametric processes in nonlinear media, with
special emphasis on the engineering of nonclassical states of photons and
atoms. We present a detailed analysis of the methods and techniques for the
production of genuinely quantum multiphoton processes in nonlinear media, and
the corresponding models of multiphoton effective interactions. We review
existing proposals for the classification, engineering, and manipulation of
nonclassical states, including Fock states, macroscopic superposition states,
and multiphoton generalized coherent states. We introduce and discuss the
structure of canonical multiphoton quantum optics and the associated one- and
two-mode canonical multiphoton squeezed states. This framework provides a
consistent multiphoton generalization of two-photon quantum optics and a
consistent Hamiltonian description of multiphoton processes associated to
higher-order nonlinearities. Finally, we discuss very recent advances that by
combining linear and nonlinear optical devices allow to realize multiphoton
entangled states of the electromnagnetic field, that are relevant for
applications to efficient quantum computation, quantum teleportation, and

The relation between pitch and gestures in a story-telling task
Anecdotal evidence suggests that both pitch range and
gestures contribute to the perception of speakers\u2019 liveliness in
speech. However, the relation between speakers\u2019 pitch range
and gestures has received little attention. It is possible that
variations in pitch range might be accompanied by variations
in gestures, and vice versa. In second language speech, the
relation between pitch range and gestures might also be
affected by speakers\u2019 difficulty in speaking the L2. In this
pilot study we compare global pitch range and gesture rate in
the speech of 3 native Italian speakers, telling the same story
once in Italian and twice in English as part of an in-class oral
presentation task. The hypothesis tested is that contextual
factors, such as speakers\u2019 nervousness with the task, cause
speakers to use narrow pitch range and limited gestures; a
greater ease with the task, due to its repetition, cause speakers
to use a wider pitch range and more gestures. This
experimental hypothesis is partially confirmed by the results
of this study
Virtual Pitch and Pitch Shifts in Church Bells
It is well established that musical sounds comprising multiple partials with frequencies approximately in the ratio of small integers give rise to a strong sensation of pitch even if the lowest or fundamental partial is missing—the so-called virtual pitch effect. Experiments on thirty test subjects demonstrate that this virtual pitch is shifted significantly by changes in the spacing of the constituent partials. The experiments measured pitch by comparison of sounds of similar timbre and were automated so that they could be performed remotely across the Internet. Analysis of the test sounds used shows that the pitch shifts are not predicted by Terhardt’s classic model of virtual pitch. The test sounds used were modelled on the sounds of church bells, but a further experiment on seventeen test subjects showed that changes in partial amplitude only had a minor effect on the pitch shifts observed, and that a pitch shift was still observed when two of the lowest frequency partials were removed, so that the effects reported are of general interest
The influence of banner advertisements on attention and memory: human faces with averted gaze can enhance advertising effectiveness
Research suggests that banner advertisements used in online marketing are often overlooked, especially when positioned horizontally on webpages. Such inattention invariably gives rise to an inability to remember advertising brands and messages, undermining the effectiveness of this marketing method. Recent interest has focused on whether human faces within banner advertisements can increase attention to the information they contain, since the gaze cues conveyed by faces can influence where observers look. We report an experiment that investigated the efficacy of faces located in banner advertisements to enhance the attentional processing and memorability of banner contents. We tracked participants’ eye movements when they examined webpages containing either bottom-right vertical banners or bottom-centre horizontal banners. We also manipulated facial information such that banners either contained no face, a face with mutual gaze or a face with averted gaze. We additionally assessed people’s memories for brands and advertising messages. Results indicated that relative to other conditions, the condition involving faces with averted gaze increased attention to the banner overall, as well as to the advertising text and product. Memorability of the brand and advertising message was also enhanced. Conversely, in the condition involving faces with mutual gaze, the focus of attention was localised more on the face region rather than on the text or product, weakening any memory benefits for the brand and advertising message. This detrimental impact of mutual gaze on attention to advertised products was especially marked for vertical banners. These results demonstrate that the inclusion of human faces with averted gaze in banner advertisements provides a promising means for marketers to increase the attention paid to such adverts, thereby enhancing memory for advertising information
Location of the target pitch within a vibrato wave
The current study investigated the relationship between the vibrato wave and the target pitch while eliminating some of the methodological problems that have plagued such research in the past. Three commercially-recorded selections were chosen for each of seven artists (for a total of 21 selections), and modern computer equipment was used to extract pitch information for each of six to fourteen notes from each selection. The chosen selections were all accompanied so that the target pitch could be determined from the accompaniment, and target pitch location within the vibrato wave was quantified absolutely and relatively. In general, the target pitch lay at or slightly below (average 4.29 cents below) the vibrato wave mean, and an analysis of variance revealed no significant differences between artists. Analyses of variance within each artist showed no differences between selections except for the soprano, who had one selection where the target pitch was generally above the vibrato wave mean
Speech Melody Properties in English, Czech and Czech English: Reference and Interference
Two major objectives were set for the present study: to provide reference data for the description of Czech and English F0 contours, and to investigate the limits of the ‘interference hypothesis’ on Czech English data. Altogether, the production of 40 speakers in 2392 breath-group F0 contours was analyzed. The speech of 32 professional speakers of English and Czech provides reference values for various acoustic correlates of pitch level, pitch span and downtrend gradient. These values were subsequently used as a benchmark for a confirmation of the interference hypothesis through comparison with a further sample of 8 non-professional speakers of English and Czech-accented English. The native English speakers of both genders produced significantly higher pitch level indicators, wider pitch span and a steeper downtrend gradient than the reference native speakers of Czech. Although the pitch level of the Czech-accented material lies in between the two reference groups, the pitch span of this group is the narrowest, which indicates that factors of foreign-accentedness other than simply interference are in effect
Time-scale and pitch modifications of speech signals and resynthesis from the discrete short-time Fourier transform
The modification methods described in this paper combine characteristics of PSOLA-based methods and algorithms that resynthesize speech from its short-time Fourier magnitude only. The starting point is a short-time Fourier representation of the signal. In the case of duration modification, portions, in voiced speech corresponding to pitch periods, are removed from or inserted in this representation. In the case of pitch modification, pitch periods are shortened or extended in this representation, and a number of pitch periods is inserted or removed, respectively. Since it is an important tool for both duration and pitch modification, the resynthesis-from-short-time-Fourier-magnitude-only method of Griffin and Lim (1984) and Griffin et al. (1984) is reviewed and adapted. Duration and pitch modification methods and their results are presented.\ud
