    Correct-By-Construction Control Synthesis for Systems with Disturbance and Uncertainty

    This dissertation focuses on correct-by-construction control synthesis for Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) under model uncertainty and disturbance. CPSs are systems that interact with the physical world and perform complicated dynamic tasks where safety is often the overriding factor. Correct-by-construction control synthesis is a concept that provides formal performance guarantees to closed-loop systems by rigorous mathematic reasoning. Since CPSs interact with the environment, disturbance and modeling uncertainty are critical to the success of the control synthesis. Disturbance and uncertainty may come from a variety of sources, such as exogenous disturbance, the disturbance caused by co-existing controllers and modeling uncertainty. To better accommodate the different types of disturbance and uncertainty, the verification and control synthesis methods must be chosen accordingly. Four approaches are included in this dissertation. First, to deal with exogenous disturbance, a polar algorithm is developed to compute an avoidable set for obstacle avoidance. Second, a supervised learning based method is proposed to design a good student controller that has safety built-in and rarely triggers the intervention of the supervisory controller, thus targeting the design of the student controller. Third, to deal with the disturbance caused by co-existing controllers, a Lyapunov verification method is proposed to formally verify the safety of coexisting controllers while respecting the confidentiality requirement. Finally, a data-driven approach is proposed to deal with model uncertainty. A minimal robust control invariant set is computed for an uncertain dynamic system without a given model by first identifying the set of admissible models and then simultaneously computing the invariant set while selecting the optimal model. The proposed methods are applicable to many real-world applications and reflect the notion of using the structure of the system to achieve performance guarantees without being overly conservative.PHDMechanical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Methods For Data-Driven Model Predictive Control

    Model predictive control (MPC) is essential to optimal decision making in a broad range of applications like building energy management and autonomous racing. MPC provides significant energy cost savings in building operations in the form of energy-efficient control with better occupant comfort, lower peak demand charges, and risk-free participation in demand response. In autonomous racing, MPC computes a safe minimum-time trajectory while driving at the limit of a vehicle’s handling capability. However, the ease in controller design depends upon the modeling complexity of the underlying physical system. For example, the identification of physics-based models of buildings is considered to be the biggest bottleneck in making MPC scalable to real buildings due to massive engineering effort. Thus, the traditional modeling approaches like the white-box and the grey-box techniques, although detailed, are considered cost and time prohibitive. In the case of autonomous racing, one of the fundamental challenges lies in predicting the vehicle’s future states like position, orientation, and speed with high accuracy because it is inevitably hard to identify vehicle model parameters that capture its real nonlinear dynamics in the presence of lateral tire slip. To this end, we present methods for data-driven MPC that combine predictive control and tools from machine learning such as Gaussian processes, neural networks, and random forests to reduce the cost of model identification and controller design in these applications. First, we introduce learning and control algorithms for building energy management based on black-box modeling that require minimum external intervention and solve some of the fundamental practical challenges ranging from experiment design to predictive control to online model update. We learn dynamical models of energy consumption and zone temperatures with high accuracy, and demonstrate load curtailment during demand response, energy savings during regular operations, and better occupant comfort compared to the default system controller. We validate our methods on several buildings in different case studies, including a real house in Italy. Next, we present a model-based planning and control framework for autonomous racing based on discrepancy error modeling that significantly reduces the effort required in system identification of the vehicle model. We start with an easy-to-tune but inaccurate physics-based model of the vehicle dynamics and thereafter correct the model predictions by learning from prior experience. Our approach bridges the gap between the design in a simulation and the real world by learning from on-board sensor measurements. We demonstrate its efficacy on a 1/43 scale autonomous racing simulation platform

    Efficient Automated Driving Strategies Leveraging Anticipation and Optimal Control

    Automated vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems bring computation, sensing, and communication technologies that exceed human abilities in some ways. For example, automated vehicles may sense a panorama all at once, do not suffer from human impairments and distractions, and could wirelessly communicate precise data with neighboring vehicles. Prototype and commercial deployments have demonstrated the capability to relieve human operators of some driving tasks up to and including fully autonomous taxi rides in some areas. The ultimate impact of this technology’s large-scale market penetration on energy efficiency remains unclear, with potential negative factors like road use by empty vehicles competing with positive ones like automatic eco-driving. Fundamentally enabled by historic and look-ahead data, this dissertation addresses the use of automated driving and driver assistance to optimize vehicle motion for energy efficiency. Facets of this problem include car following, co-optimized acceleration and lane change planning, and collaborative multi-agent guidance. Optimal control, especially model predictive control, is used extensively to improve energy efficiency while maintaining safe and timely driving via constraints. Techniques including chance constraints and mixed integer programming help overcome uncertainty and non-convexity challenges. Extensions of these techniques to tractor trailers on sloping roads are provided by making use of linear parameter-varying models. To approach the wheel-input energy eco-driving problem over generally shaped sloping roads with the computational potential for closed-loop implementation, a linear programming formulation is constructed. Distributed and collaborative techniques that enable connected and automated vehicles to accommodate their neighbors in traffic are also explored and compared to centralized control. Using simulations and vehicle-in-the-loop car following experiments, the proposed algorithms are benchmarked against others that do not make use of look-ahead information

    REFINE: Reachability-based Trajectory Design using Robust Feedback Linearization and Zonotopes

    Performing real-time receding horizon motion planning for autonomous vehicles while providing safety guarantees remains difficult. This is because existing methods to accurately predict ego vehicle behavior under a chosen controller use online numerical integration that requires a fine time discretization and thereby adversely affects real-time performance. To address this limitation, several recent papers have proposed to apply offline reachability analysis to conservatively predict the behavior of the ego vehicle. This reachable set can be constructed by utilizing a simplified model whose behavior is assumed a priori to conservatively bound the dynamics of a full-order model. However, guaranteeing that one satisfies this assumption is challenging. This paper proposes a framework named REFINE to overcome the limitations of these existing approaches. REFINE utilizes a parameterized robust controller that partially linearizes the vehicle dynamics even in the presence of modeling error. Zonotope-based reachability analysis is then performed on the closed-loop, full-order vehicle dynamics to compute the corresponding control-parameterized, over-approximate Forward Reachable Sets (FRS). Because reachability analysis is applied to the full-order model, the potential conservativeness introduced by using a simplified model is avoided. The pre-computed, control-parameterized FRS is then used online in an optimization framework to ensure safety. The proposed method is compared to several state of the art methods during a simulation-based evaluation on a full-size vehicle model and is evaluated on a 1/10th race car robot in real hardware testing. In contrast to existing methods, REFINE is shown to enable the vehicle to safely navigate itself through complex environments
