One Child\u27s Story of School-experienced Isolation and Rejection
Abstract
For twelve years of school, a tiny girl endured isolation and rejection from her peers most likely due to a physical abnormality. As the girl remembers, the educators in a small, rural school district did little to support her as she was ostracized by her classmates and encourage other children to practice compassion. At times, the educators even participated in the rejection of the child. This is the story of a tiny, brown-eyed little girl who experienced isolation and rejection time and time again.

Impact of Socialization in Elderly Public-Housing Residents
Older adults who experience social isolation have higher rates of mortality relative to their counterparts. Social interactions are an important way to combat this isolation. This research aims to better understand how social isolation in older adults living in low-income households in Richmond, Virginia (RVA) is related to their economic, physical, and psychological health status. As part of the iCubed Health and Wellness Aging Core and in collaboration with the Richmond Memorial: East End Housing Coalition for Older Adults, older adults from a selected public housing unit (n=28) self-reported their financial status, experiences with physical and psycho-social health, and feelings of social isolation. Survey participants were 71.4% female, the mean age was 69.75 years, and 25% were high school graduates. Participants averaged 34 years living in the East End and reported an average of $300 to spend on rent monthly. Overall, 55% (n=20) reported having two or more supports and 61% (n=22) reported hardly ever feeling isolated. However, a small subset of the sample reported having either no supports (5.6%, n=2) and 41.7% (n=15) lacked companionship some of the time or often. A one-way ANOVA was conducted and it was determined that participants who reported feeling left out more often were significantly more likely to report stress, anxiety, and depression (F[2, 25] = 6.998). Findings support the existence of supportive communities formed in low-income areas. Findings also indicate some older individuals residing in public housing in RVA experience social isolation and that this status is linked to poorer psycho-social health.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1048/thumbnail.jp

The effect of cubic damping on a base excited isolator: an experimental study for harmonic excitation
An experimental study has been conducted to validate theoretical solutions for the response of a base excited single degree-of-freedom isolation system possessing pure cubic damping. The cubic damping characteristic was implemented using an electromagnetic shaker with a simple non-linear velocity feedback control. The rig and practical implementation of the active damping are described. The base excitation was harmonic at a set of discrete frequencies with constant displacement amplitude. Consistent with theoretical predictions, the isolation performance at high excitation frequencies is shown to be worse than either the undamped or linear viscously damped isolation system with the displacement transmissibility tending to unity. This is contrary to the case of force excitation reported in the literature where cubic damping offers improved performance. Assessment of zonal isolation risk to changes in design parameters
The Well Containment Screening Tool (WCST) focuses on well integrity evaluation after well control incident. The WCST favors a greater wall thickness and, hence, a narrower cementing annulus, potentially increasing the risk of cement loss. We develop a structured and systematic physical model to simulate and track formation damage. A simulation process is conducted to assess the sensitivity of zonal isolation risk as design parameters are changed. In this paper, a physical model involving wellbore, casing and cement fluid is developed to understand the interaction between cement fluid and the formation. Two failure metrics are defined that provide a comprehensive understanding of the zonal isolation risk. Quantitative risk assessment is implemented with Monte Carlo simulation to assess the risk of zonal isolation problems when design parameters are changed. Models of production casing and intermediate casing are studied to verify the generality of this analysis. Taking both failure metrics into consideration, sensitivity analysis for models of production casing and intermediate casing present common observations regarding changes of design parameters. Our analysis suggests that minor increases (within 0.05”) in casing thickness, due to increased outer diameter, has little influence on the risk of cement loss, as does slight decreases in mean open hole diameter (within 0.05”). To verify the generality of this approach, in addition to casing and wellbore parameters, the sensitivity to cement fluid flow rate is analyzed. We find that risk is not significantly affected by small increase of flowrate (e.g. from 40 to 100 gpm). This paper applies a novel quantitative risk analysis to assess the influence of different design parameters on zonal isolation problems. This approach, if well implemented, can help to assess the impact of changes in design parameters (e.g., casing length and depth, mud density and cement fluid density, etc.) on drilling safety. The isolation of graphene has triggered an avalanche of studies into the
spin-dependent physical properties of this material, as well as graphene-based
spintronic devices. Here we review the experimental and theoretical
state-of-art concerning spin injection and transport, defect-induced magnetic
moments, spin-orbit coupling and spin relaxation in graphene. Future research
in graphene spintronics will need to address the development of applications
such as spin transistors and spin logic devices, as well as exotic physical
properties including topological states and proximity-induced phenomena in

Multi-service Signal Multiplexing and Isolation for Physical-Layer Network Slicing (PNS)
Network slicing has been identified as one of the most important features for 5G and beyond to enable operators to utilize networks on an as-a-service basis and meet the wide range of use cases. In physical layer, the frequency and time resources are split into slices to cater for the services with individual optimal designs, resulting in services/slices having different baseband numerologies (e.g., subcarrier spacing) and / or radio frequency (RF) front-end configurations. In such a system, the multi-service signal multiplexing and isolation among the service/slices are critical for the Physical-Layer Network Slicing (PNS) since orthogonality is destroyed and significant inter-service/ slice-band-interference (ISBI) may be generated. In this paper, we first categorize four PNS cases according to the baseband and RF configurations among the slices. The system model is established by considering a low out of band emission (OoBE) waveform operating in the service/slice frequency band to mitigate the ISBI. The desired signal and interference for the two slices are derived. Consequently, one-tap channel equalization algorithms are proposed based on the derived model. The developed system models establish a framework for further interference analysis, ISBI cancelation algorithms, system design and parameter selection (e.g., guard band), to enable spectrum efficient network slicing
