On the perspectivization of a recipient role - cross-linguistic results from a speech production experiment on GET-passives in German, Dutch and Luxembourgish

    Get PDF
The focus of this paper is the perspectivization of thematic roles generally and the recipient role specifically. Whereas perspective is defined here as the representation of something for someone from a given position (Sandig 1996: 37), perspectivization refers to the verbalization of a situation in the speech generation process (Storrer 1996: 233). In a prototypical act of giving, for example, the focus of perception (the attention of the external observer) may be on the person who gives (agent), the transferred object (patient) or the person who receives the transferred object (recipient). The languages of the world provide differing linguistic means to perspectivize such an act of giving, or better: to perspectivize the participants of such an action. In this article, the linguistic means of three selected continental West Germanic languages –German, Dutch and Luxembourgish– will be taken into consideration, with an emphasis on the perspectivization of the recipient role

Shaping of the Public Discourse on Refugees in Social Media: "Refugees Welcome Lithuania"

Social media websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are starting to become places, where people present and evaluate various events in the world: terrorist attacks in London, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels. What is more, these websites influence values of their users and readers. Technologies allow people to exchange views at the very moment of the event. The time zone, area, or other physical aspects of the platform participants do not matter. However, this ability might cause negative impact on the discussed social groups. The aim of this article – to analyse the discourse formation in media regarding refugees\u27 integration and humanitarian crisis in Europe. The goals of this study are: to figure out how the practices of public participation evidences in the context of communication through social media; to form a methodology according to up-to-date communicational concepts and analyse how the images of refugees are formed in social media; to reveal the main actors, involved in the formation of the discourse on refugees in Lithuania, by analysing the content in Facebook pages “Priimsiu pabėgėlį” (eng. “Refugees Welcome”) and “Visuomeninis komitetas prieš priverstinę imigraciją” (eng. “Public Committee against Forced Immigration”)

Introduction: Linguistic and literary aspects of perspectivity

    Get PDF
The relationship between meaning and perspectivity has been recognized for a long time both in linguistics and in literary theory. It is well-known that the perspectival character of our sensory experiences constitutes an important factor in the determination of meaning. But the nature of the relationship between meaning and perspective is heavily contested. Perspectival phenomena are sometimes treated as isolated or local issues. In some cases, however, they are conceived of as playing a fundamental role in scientific theorizing. This introductory paper gives a short overview of the current trends and results from this ongoing research

    Towards an Epistemic Sensibilization

    Get PDF
This paper examines the ways in which the concept discussed under the term “intersectionality” can provide a productive framing for entangled inequalities, as both concepts have a lot in common. The paper argues that an intersectional sensibilization to conceptualizations of inequalities helps capture inequalities in their entangled historical, micro and macro level dimensions and avoid one-dimensional reductions. However, this concept which is itself deeply Euro- and U.S.-centric must be improved for use in transnational contexts and for other locations of knowledge production. As such, an intersectional epistemic sensibilization can prove useful for contextualizing and situating multiple knowledges and modes of knowledge production and provide a frame for an implicit critique of hegemony. This conceptual work is a necessary step towards developing ways to overcome asymmetrical social power structures as expressed in unequal circulations of knowledge

The Interpretation of Message and the Social Impact of Selection Contributor\u27s Thread on Young on Top Kaskus Community (Yotkc)

Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Interpretation of Message, and SocialImpact. This research aims to interpret the message in selection contributor\u27s thread on Young on Top Kaskus Community and analyze the social impact of the thread toward the kaskus users and hence tries to answer the problems of the study, i.e.: (1) what are the interpretation on the messages performed by Billy Boen on his motivational threads, (2) What are the textual interpretations performed by kaskusers on Billy Boen\u27s mot ivat ional threads, and (3) What are the social impact found on Billy Boen\u27s motivat ional threads. This research uses Critical Discourse Analysis theoretical framework from Norman Fairclough consisting of textual analysis, discursive practice, and sociocultural process. On the level of textual analysis, it has a purpose to interpret the message on Billy Boen motivational threads by using staging, perspectivization, and choices of word theories from Renkema. Discursive analysis is used to analyze the textual interpretations perfomed by kaskusers on his motivational threads. While social analysis is used to find out the impacts of his threads toward kaskusers. The writer used qualitative approach and document or content analysis method in conducting the research. The data were collected from kaskus especially from Billy Boen\u27s mot ivat ional threads and the comments posted by ISO kaskusers. The results indicate that (1) on staging analysis; Billy Boen\u27s utterances have already proved the theory of staging because most of his utterances use the same style of staging proposed by Renkema. In terms of perspectivization analysis, Billy Boen uses vision perspectivization rather than empathy perspectivization on his utterances, meanwhile on choices of words analysis, Billy Boen is balanced in using standard and non standard words on his utterances. (2) Most of ISO kaskus users basically can understand the messages on his motivational threads. (3) Most of ISO kaskusers are basically willing to do his advice and the number of ISO kaskuser who agrees with his opinion on his motivational thread are quite a lot.The writer suggests the next researchers to have good understanding on Critical Discourse Analysis especially how to relate between language, power, ideology and its social impact toward society. Then, the next researcher also needs to use the other theory than Critical Discourse Analysis theoretical framework proposed by Norman Fairchlough (1995)

Perspectivization and modes of quoting in Hungarian

This paper examines modes of quoting with special regard to the organization of perspective. Due to the pragmatic interest of the study, our focus is on the functioning of two context-dependent vantage points, the subject of consciousness and the referential centre. Our key question about the former is to whom speaking as a sign of active consciousness is attributed and how this is linguistically marked. As regards the latter, the central issue is from where and how the spatio-temporal and interpersonal relations of the quoted discourse are represented.Further problems to be discussed include the questions of how and to what extent quoting is associated with pragmatic or metapragmatic awareness, and how various quoting modes may differ along this dimension.Although the paper is mostly concerned with a ‘universal pragmatic’ characterization of the functioning of perspective in quotations, it also highlights some language-particular features of Hungarian quoting strategies and touches on their evolution in the history of the language

Two times three little pigs: Dysfluency, cognitive complexity and autism

This paper presents an analysis of dysfluencies in two oral tellings of a familiar children's story by a young boy with autism. Thurber & Tager-Flusberg (1993) postulate a lower degree of cognitive and communicative investment to explain a lower frequency of non-grammatical pauses observed in elicited narratives of children with autism in comparison to typically developing and intellectually disabled controls. we also found a very low frequency of non-grammatical pauses in our data, but indications of high engagement and cognitive and communicative investment. We point to a wider range of disfluencies as indicators of cognitive load, and show that the kind and location of dysfluencies produced may reveal which aspects of the narrative task are creating the greatest cognitive demand: here, mental state ascription, perspectivization, and adherence to story schema. This paper thus generates analytical options and hypotheses that can be explored further in a larger population of children with autism and typically developing controls

This article presents an emergent model of the conceptualization of strah (Fear) in Croatian with focus on the constructions derived from the container image schema coded by preposition u (in). the semantic and syntactic analysis of the collocations of lexeme strah demonstrates conceptual hierarchy of the activation of metonymic and metaphoric processes via syntactic organization and perspectivization. It is argued that the meaning of the lexeme strah is conceptualized by metonymic profiling sensory-motor correlates of affective states and by superimposing metaphorical mappings of objects, spatial relations, object/entities with thematic and agentive roles that are organized in an emergent system of respective ontological, spatial, thematic and agentive patterns of linguistic constructions.
