    Graph Summarization

    The continuous and rapid growth of highly interconnected datasets, which are both voluminous and complex, calls for the development of adequate processing and analytical techniques. One method for condensing and simplifying such datasets is graph summarization. It denotes a series of application-specific algorithms designed to transform graphs into more compact representations while preserving structural patterns, query answers, or specific property distributions. As this problem is common to several areas studying graph topologies, different approaches, such as clustering, compression, sampling, or influence detection, have been proposed, primarily based on statistical and optimization methods. The focus of our chapter is to pinpoint the main graph summarization methods, but especially to focus on the most recent approaches and novel research trends on this topic, not yet covered by previous surveys.Comment: To appear in the Encyclopedia of Big Data Technologie

    Event detection and user interest discovering in social media data streams

    Social media plays an increasingly important role in people’s life. Microblogging is a form of social media which allows people to share and disseminate real-life events. Broadcasting events in microblogging networks can be an effective method of creating awareness, divulging important information and so on. However, many existing approaches at dissecting the information content primarily discuss the event detection model and ignore the user interest which can be discovered during event evolution. This leads to difficulty in tracking the most important events as they evolve including identifying the influential spreaders. There is further complication given that the influential spreaders interests will also change during event evolution. The influential spreaders play a key role in event evolution and this has been largely ignored in traditional event detection methods. To this end, we propose a user-interest model based event evolution model, named the HEE (Hot Event Evolution) model. This model not only considers the user interest distribution, but also uses the short text data in the social network to model the posts and the recommend methods to discovering the user interests. This can resolve the problem of data sparsity, as exemplified by many existing event detection methods, and improve the accuracy of event detection. A hot event automatic filtering algorithm is initially applied to remove the influence of general events, improving the quality and efficiency of mining the event. Then an automatic topic clustering algorithm is applied to arrange the short texts into clusters with similar topics. An improved user-interest model is proposed to combine the short texts of each cluster into a long text document simplifying the determination of the overall topic in relation to the interest distribution of each user during the evolution of important events. Finally a novel cosine measure based event similarity detection method is used to assess correlation between events thereby detecting the process of event evolution. The experimental results on a real Twitter dataset demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of our proposed model for both event detection and user interest discovery during the evolution of hot events.N/

    Twitter has redefined the way social activities can be coordinated; used for mobilizing people during natural disasters, studying health epidemics, and recently, as a communication platform during social and political change. As a large scale system, the volume of data transmitted per day presents Twitter users with a problem: how can valuable content be distilled from the back chatter, how can the providers of valuable information be promoted, and ultimately how can influential individuals be identified?To tackle this, we have developed a model based upon the Twitter message exchange which enables us to analyze conversations around specific topics and identify key players in a conversation. A working implementation of the model helps categorize Twitter users by specific roles based on their dynamic communication behavior rather than an analysis of their static friendship network. This provides a method of identifying users who are potentially producers or distributers of valuable knowledge

    Management Responses to Online Reviews: Big Data From Social Media Platforms

    User-generated content from virtual communities helps businesses develop and sustain competitive advantages, which leads to asking how firms can strategically manage that content. This research, which consists of two studies, discusses management response strategies for hotel firms to gain a competitive advantage and improve customer relationship management by leveraging big data, social media analytics, and deep learning techniques. Since negative reviews' harmful effects are greater than positive comments' contribution, firms must strategise their responses to intervene in and minimise those damages. Although current literature includes a sheer amount of research that presents effective response strategies to negative reviews, they mostly overlook an extensive classification of response strategies. The first study consists of two phases and focuses on comprehensive response strategies to only negative reviews. The first phase is explorative and presents a correlation analysis between response strategies and overall ratings of hotels. It also reveals the differences in those strategies based on hotel class, average customer rating, and region. The second phase investigates effective response strategies for increasing the subsequent ratings of returning customers using logistic regression analysis. It presents that responses involving statements of admittance of mistake(s), specific action, and direct contact requests help increase following ratings of previously dissatisfied returning customers. In addition, personalising the response for better customer relationship management is particularly difficult due to the significant variability of textual reviews with various topics. The second study examines the impact of personalised management responses to positive and negative reviews on rating growth, integrating a novel method of multi-topic matching approach with a panel data analysis. It demonstrates that (a) personalised responses improve future ratings of hotels; (b) the effect of personalised responses is stronger for luxury hotels in increasing future ratings.     COMMUNITY DETECTION IN GRAPHS

As a type of unsupervised or semi-supervised approach, community detection aims to explore node high-order closeness by leveraging graph topological structure. By grouping similar nodes or edges into the same community while separating dissimilar ones apart into different communities, graph structure can be revealed in a coarser resolution. It can be beneficial for numerous applications such as user shopping recommendation and advertisement in e-commerce, protein-protein interaction prediction in the bioinformatics, and literature recommendation or scholar collaboration in citation analysis. However, identifying communities is an ill-defined problem. Due to the No Free Lunch theorem [1], there is neither gold standard to represent perfect community partition nor universal methods that are able to detect satisfied communities for all tasks under various types of graphs. To have a global view of this research topic, I summarize state-of-art community detection methods by categorizing them based on graph types, research tasks and methodology frameworks. As academic exploration on community detection grows rapidly in recent years, I hereby particularly focus on the state-of-art works published in the latest decade, which may leave out some classic models published decades ago. Meanwhile, three subtle community detection tasks are proposed and assessed in this dissertation as well. First, apart from general models which consider only graph structures, personalized community detection considers user need as auxiliary information to guide community detection. In the end, there will be fine-grained communities for nodes better matching user needs while coarser-resolution communities for the rest of less relevant nodes. Second, graphs always suffer from the sparse connectivity issue. Leveraging conventional models directly on such graphs may hugely distort the quality of generate communities. To tackle such a problem, cross-graph techniques are involved to propagate external graph information as a support for target graph community detection. Third, graph community structure supports a natural language processing (NLP) task to depict node intrinsic characteristics by generating node summarizations via a text generative model. The contribution of this dissertation is threefold. First, a decent amount of researches are reviewed and summarized under a well-defined taxonomy. Existing works about methods, evaluation and applications are all addressed in the literature review. Second, three novel community detection tasks are demonstrated and associated models are proposed and evaluated by comparing with state-of-art baselines under various datasets. Third, the limitations of current works are pointed out and future research tracks with potentials are discussed as well
