Performance of a biomedical implant communication system using PWM coded ASK

peer reviewedBiomedical implanted systems require wireless technology to transfer data and power to the implanted devices. This paper compares the performance and suitability of the ASK, FSK, PSK, OOK and PWM-ASK modulation schemes in implantable devices. Simulations illustrate that the best scenario for power and data transmission is obtained using PWM coded ASK (PWM-ASK) with the 0 bit transmitted as a 50% duty cycle, and the 1 bit transmitted as 90% duty cycle. The latter is the most popular and promising system due to the low power requirement for the receiver while providing a decent BER compared to traditional modulation schemes: a comparison of the power transmission level of PWM-ASK shows a 53.4% power increase compared to OOK modulation. © 2012 IEEE
