    Near-field baseband communication system for use in biomedical implants

    This thesis introduces the reader to the near-field baseband pulse radio communication for biomedical implants. It details the design and implementation of the complete communication system with a particular emphasis on the antenna structure and waveform coding that is compatible with this particular technology. The wireless communication system has great employability in small pill-sized biomedical diagnostic devices offering the advantages of low power consumption and easy integration with SoC and lab-in-a-pill technologies. The greatest challenge was the choice of antenna that had to be made to effectively transmit the pulses. A systematic approach has been carried out in arriving at the most suitable antenna for efficient emanation of pulses and the fields around it are analysed electromagnetically using a commercially available software. A magnetic antenna can be used to transmit the information from inside a human body to the outside world. The performance of the above antenna was evaluated in a salt solution of different concentrations which is similar to a highly conductive lossy medium like a human body. Near-field baseband pulse transmission is a waveform transmission scheme wherein the pulse shape is crucial for decoding information at the receiver. This demands a new approach to the antenna design, both at the transmitter and the receiver. The antenna had to be analysed in the time-domain to know its effects on the pulse and an expression for the antenna bandwidth has been proposed in this thesis. The receiving antenna should be able to detect very short pulses and while doing so has to also maintain the pulse shape with minimal distortion. Different loading congurations were explored to determine the most feasible one for receiving very short pulses. Return-to-zero (RZ), Non-return-zero (NRZ) and Manchester coded pulse waveforms were tested for their compatibility and performance with the near-field baseband pulse radio communication. It was concluded that Manchester coded waveform are perfectly suited for this particular near-field communication technology. Pulse interval modulation was also investigated and the findings suggested that it was easier to implement and had a high throughput rate too. A simple receiver algorithm has been suggested and practically tested on a digital signal processor. There is further scope for research to develop complex signal processing algorithms at the receiver

    An energy-efficient wireless data link for implantable electronics

Furthermore, in implanted systems with many neural recording electrodes, the data rate of the wireless link will need to be quite high since each recording electrode can produce about 120 kbps of data. For low-power operation, inductively-coupled near-field wireless links have shown great promise and were used to develop a power-efficient data link for biomedical implants. A prototype bi-directional, half-duplex wireless link based on inductive coupling was designed in a 0.18 [mu]m process. The uplink (i.e. data transmission from the internal transceiver) was designed to use an impedance modulation strategy. Since this technique only requires a single local oscillator (LO) in the external transceiver, the energy expenditure of the implanted transceiver is minimized. Simulated uplink data transfer rates of up to 10 Mbps has been shown. A PWM based ASK coding strategy was used for the downlink (i.e. data transmission to the implanted device). The downlink is able to achieve a data transfer rate of up to 1.5 Mbps. A technique to reduce BER of inductive coupling links due to pulse-width distortion effects by pre-distorting the transmitted data is also presented. A calibration technique to reduce the resonant frequency mismatch between the two magnetically coupled resonators is also shown.by Daniel Prashanth Kumar.S.M

    RÉSUMÉ Les implants médicaux électroniques (Implantable Medical Devices - IMDs) sont notamment utilisés pour restaurer ou améliorer des fonctions perdues de certains organes. Ils sont capables de traiter des complications qui ne peuvent pas être guéries avec des médicaments ou par la chirurgie. Offrant des propriétés et des améliorations curatives sans précédent, les IMDs sont de plus en plus demandés par les médecins et les patients. En 2017, le marché mondial des IMD était évalué à 15,21 milliards de dollars. D’ici 2025, il devrait atteindre 30,42 mil-liards de dollars, soutenu par un taux de croissance annuel de 9,24% selon le nouveau rapport publié par Fior Markets. Cette expansion entraîne une augmentation des exigences pour as-surer des performances supérieures, des fonctionnalités supplémentaires et une durée de vie plus longue. Ces exigences ne peuvent être satisfaites qu’avec des techniques d’alimentation avancées, un débit de données élevé et une électronique miniaturisée robuste. Construire des systèmes capables de fournir toutes ces caractéristiques est l’objectif principal d’un grand nombre de chercheurs. Parmi plusieurs technologies sans fil, le lien inductif, qui consiste en une paire de bobines à couplage magnétique, est la technique sans fil la plus largement utilisée pour le transfert de puissance et de données. Cela est dû à sa simplicité, sa sécurité et sa capacité à transmettre à la fois de la puissance et des données de façon bidirectionnelle. Cependant, il existe encore un certain nombre de défis concernant la mise en œuvre d’un tel système de transfert d’énergie et de données sans fil (Wireless Power and Data Transfer - WPDT system). Un défi majeur est que les exigences pour une efficacité de transfert d’énergie élevée et pour une communication à haut débit sont contradictoires. En fait, la bande passante doit être élargie pour des débits de données élevés, mais réduite pour une transmission efficace de l’énergie. Un autre grand défi consiste à réaliser un démodulateur fonctionnant à haute vitesse avec une mise en œuvre simple et une consommation d’énergie ultra-faible. Dans ce projet, nous proposons et expérimentons un nouveau système WPDT dédié aux IMD permettant une communication à haute vitesse et une alimentation efficace tout en maintenant une faible consommation d’énergie, une petite surface de silicium et une mise en œuvre simple du récepteur. Le système proposé est basé sur un nouveau schéma de modulation appelé "Carrier Width Modulation (CWM)", ainsi que sur des circuits de modulation et de démodulation inédits. La modulation consiste en un coupe-circuit synchronisé du réservoir LC primaire pendant un ou deux cycles en fonction des données transmises.----------ABSTRACT Implantable Medical Devices (IMDs) are electronic implants notably used to restore or en-hance lost organ functions. They may treat complications that cannot be cured with medica-tion or through surgery. O˙ering unprecedented healing properties and enhancements, IMDs are increasingly requested by physicians and patients. In 2017, the worldwide IMD market was valued at USD 15,21 Billion. By 2025, it is expected to attain USD 30.42 Billion sus-tained by a compound annual growth rate of 9.24% according to a recent report published by Fior Markets. This expansion is bringing-up more demand for higher performance, additional features, and longer device lifespan and autonomy. These requirements can only be achieved with advanced power sources, high-data rates, and robust miniaturized electronics. Building systems able to provide all these characteristics is the main goal of many researchers. Among several wireless technologies, the inductive link, which consists of a magnetically-coupled pair of coils, is the most widely used wireless technique for both power and data transfer. This is due to its simplicity, safety, and ability to provide simultaneously both power and bidirectional data transfer to the implant. However there are still a number of challenges regarding the implementation of such Wireless Power and Data Transfer (WPDT) systems. One main challenge is that the requirements for high Power Transfer Eÿciency (PTE) and for high-data rate communication are contra-dictory. In fact, the bandwidth needs to be widened for high data rates, but narrowed for eÿcient power delivery. Another big challenge is to implement a high-speed demodulator with simple implementation and ultra-low power consumption. In this project, we propose and experiment a new WPDT system dedicated to IMDs allow-ing high-speed communication and eÿcient power delivery, while maintaining a low power consumption, small silicon area, and simple implementation of the receiver. The proposed system is based on a new Carrier Width Modulation (CWM) scheme, as well as novel modu-lation and demodulation circuits. The modulation consists of a synchronized opening of the primary LC tank for one or two cycles according to the transmitted data. Unlike conventional modulation techniques, the data rate of the proposed CWM modulation is not limited by the quality factors of the primary and secondary coils. On the other hand, the proposed CWM demodulator allows higher-speed demodulation and simple implementation, unlike conven-tional demodulators for a similar modulation scheme. It also o˙ers a wide range of data rates under any selected frequency from 10 to 31 MHz

    An Energy Efficient non-volatile FPGA Digital Processor for Brain Neuromodulation

    PhD ThesisBrain stimulation technologies have the potential to provide considerable clinical benefits for people with a range of neurological disorders. Recent neuroscience studies have shown that considerable information of brain states is contained in the low frequency local field potential (If-LFP; below 5Hz) recordings with application in real-time closed-loop neurostimulation for treating neurological disorders. Given these signals can be sampled at low sampling rate and hence provide sparse data streams, there is an opportunity to design implantable neuroprosthesis with long battery lifecycles which enables enough processing power to implement long-term, real-time closed loop control algorithms. In this thesis, a closed-loop embedded digital processor has been created for use in rodent neuroscience experiments. The first contribution of this work is to develop a mathematical analytical design approach of feedback controller for suppressing high-amplitude epileptic activity in the neuron mass model to form a better understanding of how to perform a better closed-loop stimulation to control seizures. The second contribution and the third contribution are combined to present an exploratory energy-efficient digital processor architecture built with commercial off-the-shelf non-volatile FPGAs and microcontroller for sparse data processing of brain neuromodulation. A digital hardware design of an exemplar PID control algorithm has been implemented on this proposed digital architecture. A new power computing diagram of this time-driven approach significantly reduced the power consumption which suggests that a digital combined control system of non-volatile FPGAs and microcontroller outweighs a digital control system of microcontroller with microcontroller regarding computing time cost and energy consumption supposing one microcontroller is always required. Taken together, this digital energy-efficient processor architecture gives important insights and viewpoints for the further advancements of neuroprosthesis for brain neurostimulation to achieve lower power consumption for sparse sampling data rate

    Capsule endoscopy system with novel imaging algorithms

    Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is a state-of-the-art technology to receive images of human intestine for medical diagnostics. In WCE, the patient ingests a specially designed electronic capsule which has imaging and wireless transmission capabilities inside it. While the capsule travels through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, it captures images and sends them wirelessly to an outside data logger unit. The data logger stores the image data and then they are transferred to a personal computer (PC) where the images are reconstructed and displayed for diagnosis. The key design challenge in WCE is to reduce the area and power consumption of the capsule while maintaining acceptable image reconstruction. In this research, the unique properties of WCE images are identified by analyzing hundreds of endoscopic images and video frames, and then these properties are used to develop novel and low complexity compression algorithms tailored for capsule endoscopy. The proposed image compressor consists of a new YEF color space converter, lossless prediction coder, customizable chrominance sub-sampler and an efficient Golomb-Rice encoder. The scheme has both lossy and lossless modes and is further customized to work with two lighting modes – conventional white light imaging (WLI) and emerging narrow band imaging (NBI). The average compression ratio achieved using the proposed lossy compression algorithm is 80.4% for WBI and 79.2% for NBI with high reconstruction quality index for both bands. Two surveys have been conducted which show that the reconstructed images have high acceptability among medical imaging doctors and gastroenterologists. The imaging algorithms have been realized in hardware description language (HDL) and their functionalities have been verified in field programmable gate array (FPGA) board. Later it was implemented in a 0.18 μm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology and the chip was fabricated. Due to the low complexity of the core compressor, it consumes only 43 µW of power and 0.032 mm2 of area. The compressor is designed to work with commercial low-power image sensor that outputs image pixels in raster scan fashion, eliminating the need of significant input buffer memory. To demonstrate the advantage, a prototype of the complete WCE system including an FPGA based electronic capsule, a microcontroller based data logger unit and a Windows based image reconstruction software have been developed. The capsule contains the proposed low complexity image compressor and can generate both lossy and lossless compressed bit-stream. The capsule prototype also supports both white light imaging (WLI) and narrow band imaging (NBI) imaging modes and communicates with the data logger in full duplex fashion, which enables configuring the image size and imaging mode in real time during the examination. The developed data logger is portable and has a high data rate wireless connectivity including Bluetooth, graphical display for real time image viewing with state-of-the-art touch screen technology. The data are logged in micro SD cards and can be transferred to PC or Smartphone using card reader, USB interface, or Bluetooth wireless link. The workstation software can decompress and show the reconstructed images. The images can be navigated, marked, zoomed and can be played as video. Finally, ex-vivo testing of the WCE system has been done in pig's intestine to validate its performance

    Nanopower CMOS transponders for UHF and microwave RFID systems

    At first, we present an analysis and a discussion of the design options and tradeoffs for a passive microwave transponder. We derive a set of criteria for the optimization of the voltage multiplier, the power matching network and the backscatter modulator in order to optimize the operating range. In order to match the strictly power requirements, the communication protocol between transponder and reader has been chosen in a convenient way, in order to make the architecture of the passive transponder very simple and then ultra-low-power. From the circuital point of view, the digital section has been implemented in subthreshold CMOS logic with very low supply voltage and clock frequency. We present different solutions to supply power to the transponder, in order to keep the power consumption in the deep sub-µW regime and to drastically reduce the huge sensitivity of the subthreshold logic to temperature and process variations. Moreover, a low-voltage and low-power EEPROM in a standard CMOS process has been implemented. Finally, we have presented the implementation of the entire passive transponder, operating in the UHF or microwave frequency range

    Energy-Efficient Circuit Designs for Miniaturized Internet of Things and Wireless Neural Recording

    Internet of Things (IoT) have become omnipresent over various territories including healthcare, smart building, agriculture, and environmental and industrial monitoring. Today, IoT are getting miniaturized, but at the same time, they are becoming more intelligent along with the explosive growth of machine learning. Not only do IoT sense and collect data and communicate, but they also edge-compute and extract useful information within the small form factor. A main challenge of such miniaturized and intelligent IoT is to operate continuously for long lifetime within its low battery capacity. Energy efficiency of circuits and systems is key to addressing this challenge. This dissertation presents two different energy-efficient circuit designs: a 224pW 260ppm/°C gate-leakage-based timer for wireless sensor nodes (WSNs) for the IoT and an energy-efficient all analog machine learning accelerator with 1.2 µJ/inference of energy consumption for the CIFAR-10 and SVHN datasets. Wireless neural interface is another area that demands miniaturized and energy-efficient circuits and systems for safe long-term monitoring of brain activity. Historically, implantable systems have used wires for data communication and power, increasing risks of tissue damage. Therefore, it has been a long-standing goal to distribute sub-mm-scale true floating and wireless implants throughout the brain and to record single-neuron-level activities.     Neuromorphic auditory computing: towards a digital, event-based implementation of the hearing sense for robotics

    In this work, it is intended to advance on the development of the neuromorphic audio processing systems in robots through the implementation of an open-source neuromorphic cochlea, event-based models of primary auditory nuclei, and their potential use for real-time robotics applications. First, the main gaps when working with neuromorphic cochleae were identified. Among them, the accessibility and usability of such sensors can be considered as a critical aspect. Silicon cochleae could not be as flexible as desired for some applications. However, FPGA-based sensors can be considered as an alternative for fast prototyping and proof-of-concept applications. Therefore, a software tool was implemented for generating open-source, user-configurable Neuromorphic Auditory Sensor models that can be deployed in any FPGA, removing the aforementioned barriers for the neuromorphic research community. Next, the biological principles of the animals' auditory system were studied with the aim of continuing the development of the Neuromorphic Auditory Sensor. More specifically, the principles of binaural hearing were deeply studied for implementing event-based models to perform real-time sound source localization tasks. Two different approaches were followed to extract inter-aural time differences from event-based auditory signals. On the one hand, a digital, event-based design of the Jeffress model was implemented. On the other hand, a novel digital implementation of the Time Difference Encoder model was designed and implemented on FPGA. Finally, three different robotic platforms were used for evaluating the performance of the proposed real-time neuromorphic audio processing architectures. An audio-guided central pattern generator was used to control a hexapod robot in real-time using spiking neural networks on SpiNNaker. Then, a sensory integration application was implemented combining sound source localization and obstacle avoidance for autonomous robots navigation. Lastly, the Neuromorphic Auditory Sensor was integrated within the iCub robotic platform, being the first time that an event-based cochlea is used in a humanoid robot. Then, the conclusions obtained are presented and new features and improvements are proposed for future works.En este trabajo se pretende avanzar en el desarrollo de los sistemas de procesamiento de audio neuromórficos en robots a través de la implementación de una cóclea neuromórfica de código abierto, modelos basados en eventos de los núcleos auditivos primarios, y su potencial uso para aplicaciones de robótica en tiempo real. En primer lugar, se identificaron los principales problemas a la hora de trabajar con cócleas neuromórficas. Entre ellos, la accesibilidad y usabilidad de dichos sensores puede considerarse un aspecto crítico. Los circuitos integrados analógicos que implementan modelos cocleares pueden no pueden ser tan flexibles como se desea para algunas aplicaciones específicas. Sin embargo, los sensores basados en FPGA pueden considerarse una alternativa para el desarrollo rápido y flexible de prototipos y aplicaciones de prueba de concepto. Por lo tanto, en este trabajo se implementó una herramienta de software para generar modelos de sensores auditivos neuromórficos de código abierto y configurables por el usuario, que pueden desplegarse en cualquier FPGA, eliminando las barreras mencionadas para la comunidad de investigación neuromórfica. A continuación, se estudiaron los principios biológicos del sistema auditivo de los animales con el objetivo de continuar con el desarrollo del Sensor Auditivo Neuromórfico (NAS). Más concretamente, se estudiaron en profundidad los principios de la audición binaural con el fin de implementar modelos basados en eventos para realizar tareas de localización de fuentes sonoras en tiempo real. Se siguieron dos enfoques diferentes para extraer las diferencias temporales interaurales de las señales auditivas basadas en eventos. Por un lado, se implementó un diseño digital basado en eventos del modelo Jeffress. Por otro lado, se diseñó una novedosa implementación digital del modelo de codificador de diferencias temporales y se implementó en FPGA. Por último, se utilizaron tres plataformas robóticas diferentes para evaluar el rendimiento de las arquitecturas de procesamiento de audio neuromórfico en tiempo real propuestas. Se utilizó un generador central de patrones guiado por audio para controlar un robot hexápodo en tiempo real utilizando redes neuronales pulsantes en SpiNNaker. A continuación, se implementó una aplicación de integración sensorial que combina la localización de fuentes de sonido y la evitación de obstáculos para la navegación de robots autónomos. Por último, se integró el Sensor Auditivo Neuromórfico dentro de la plataforma robótica iCub, siendo la primera vez que se utiliza una cóclea basada en eventos en un robot humanoide. Por último, en este trabajo se presentan las conclusiones obtenidas y se proponen nuevas funcionalidades y mejoras para futuros trabajos

Additionally, health and related care, family composition and life-style, housing and migration are also affected. Given the rapid increase in the aging of the population and the further increase that is expected in the coming years, an important problem that has to be faced is the corresponding increase in chronic illness, disabilities, and loss of functional independence endemic to the elderly (WHO 2008). For this reason, novel methods of rehabilitation and care management are urgently needed. This book covers many rehabilitation support systems and robots developed for upper limbs, lower limbs as well as visually impaired condition.
