Supply chain management as the key to a firm’s strategy in the global marketplace
Purpose: This research aims to analyze the intersection of two literature streams: that of strategy and supply chain management (SCM). This review should create a better understanding of “strategic SCM” by focusing on relevant theories in the strategic management field and their intersection with SCM to develop a joint research agenda. Design/Methodology/Approach: We conducted a correspondence analysis on the content of 3,402 articles from the top SCM journals. This analysis provides a map of the intellectual structure of content in this field to date. The key trends and changes were identified in strategic SCM research from 1990-2014 as well as the intersection with the key schools of strategic management. Findings: The results suggest that SCM is key to a successful deployment of strategy for competing in the global marketplace. The main theoretical foundations for research in this field were identified and discussed. Gaps were detected and combinations of theoretical foundations of strategic management and SCM suggest four poles for future research: agents and focal firm; distributions and logistics strategic models; SCM competitive requirements; SCM relational governance. Research limitations/implications: Scholars in both the strategy and the SCM fields continue to search for competitive advantages. Much recent research indicates that strategic SCM can be a critical source for that advantage. One of the limitations of our research is that the analysis does not include every journal that published an article mentioning SCM. However, the 34 journals selected are reputed to be the most influential on SCM and focused primarily on SCM. Practical implications: The map of the intellectual structure of research to strategic SCM highlights the need to combine different theoretical approaches to the complex phenomenon of SCM. Practitioners should consider the supply chain as an informal organization and should devote time and resources to build a shared advantage across the supply chain. They should also consider the inherent benefits and risks that sharing Originality/value: The paper demonstrates that strategic SCM needs a balanced and rigorous combination of theoretical approaches to deliver more theory-driven evidences. Our research combines both a qualitative analysis and a quantitative methodology that summarizes gaps and then outlines future research from a large sample of articles. This methodology is an original contribution to this field and offers some assistance for enlarging the sample of future literature reviews
Sequential Selection of Correlated Ads by POMDPs
Online advertising has become a key source of revenue for both web search
engines and online publishers. For them, the ability of allocating right ads to
right webpages is critical because any mismatched ads would not only harm web
users' satisfactions but also lower the ad income. In this paper, we study how
online publishers could optimally select ads to maximize their ad incomes over
time. The conventional offline, content-based matching between webpages and ads
is a fine start but cannot solve the problem completely because good matching
does not necessarily lead to good payoff. Moreover, with the limited display
impressions, we need to balance the need of selecting ads to learn true ad
payoffs (exploration) with that of allocating ads to generate high immediate
payoffs based on the current belief (exploitation). In this paper, we address
the problem by employing Partially observable Markov decision processes
(POMDPs) and discuss how to utilize the correlation of ads to improve the
efficiency of the exploration and increase ad incomes in a long run. Our
mathematical derivation shows that the belief states of correlated ads can be
naturally updated using a formula similar to collaborative filtering. To test
our model, a real world ad dataset from a major search engine is collected and
categorized. Experimenting over the data, we provide an analyse of the effect
of the underlying parameters, and demonstrate that our algorithms significantly
outperform other strong baselines
Spying the World from your Laptop -- Identifying and Profiling Content Providers and Big Downloaders in BitTorrent
This paper presents a set of exploits an adversary can use to continuously
spy on most BitTorrent users of the Internet from a single machine and for a
long period of time. Using these exploits for a period of 103 days, we
collected 148 million IPs downloading 2 billion copies of contents. We identify
the IP address of the content providers for 70% of the BitTorrent contents we
spied on. We show that a few content providers inject most contents into
BitTorrent and that those content providers are located in foreign data
centers. We also show that an adversary can compromise the privacy of any peer
in BitTorrent and identify the big downloaders that we define as the peers who
subscribe to a large number of contents. This infringement on users' privacy
poses a significant impediment to the legal adoption of BitTorrent
A content and comparative analysis of strategic management research in the Baltic area
Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to provide a research agenda for qualitative studies in the field of strategic management (SM) in the Baltic area.
Design/methodology/approach
– A total of 167 SM-related articles in this area between 2000 and 2013 were found. The content within title, abstract and authors’ keywords was analysed by means of a multiple correspondence analysis based on the HOMALS technique.
Findings
– The intellectual structure of SM in the Baltic area is to some extent similar to the global structure of the field. Hence research on this topic in the Baltic area is well integrated in the field. Three topics of interest have been identified while the fourth seems to offer more limited opportunities for qualitative studies. These are: entry and competition; strategic behaviour and the micro-foundations of strategy; the growth-performance relationship; and global strategies.
Research limitations/implications
– Despite the modest number of articles in our sample, the findings are consistent with past research on the structure of the SM field. The classification of articles into qualitative- and quantitative-based methods helped provide a research agenda.
Practical implications
– SM scholars in the Baltic area may find this paper as an interesting input to their quest for finding and justifying their own research path.
Originality/value
– This is an original literature review. The use of a quantitative method in the literature review and the suggested matrix is a second original contribution to evolving methodologies for content analysis. The method allows the inclusion of large samples while limiting the use of scholars’ intuition.

A Hybrid Multicast-Unicast Infrastructure for Efficient Publish-Subscribe in Enterprise Networks
One of the main challenges in building a large scale publish-subscribe
infrastructure in an enterprise network, is to provide the subscribers with the
required information, while minimizing the consumed host and network resources.
Typically, previous approaches utilize either IP multicast or point-to-point
unicast for efficient dissemination of the information.
In this work, we propose a novel hybrid framework, which is a combination of
both multicast and unicast data dissemination. Our hybrid framework allows us
to take the advantages of both multicast and unicast, while avoiding their
drawbacks. We investigate several algorithms for computing the best mapping of
publishers' transmissions into multicast and unicast transport.
Using extensive simulations, we show that our hybrid framework reduces
consumed host and network resources, outperforming traditional solutions. To
insure the subscribers interests closely resemble those of real-world settings,
our simulations are based on stock market data and on recorded IBM WebShpere
subscriptions
Towards Hybrid Cloud-assisted Crowdsourced Live Streaming: Measurement and Analysis
Crowdsourced Live Streaming (CLS), most notably Twitch.tv, has seen explosive
growth in its popularity in the past few years. In such systems, any user can
lively broadcast video content of interest to others, e.g., from a game player
to many online viewers. To fulfill the demands from both massive and
heterogeneous broadcasters and viewers, expensive server clusters have been
deployed to provide video ingesting and transcoding services. Despite the
existence of highly popular channels, a significant portion of the channels is
indeed unpopular. Yet as our measurement shows, these broadcasters are
consuming considerable system resources; in particular, 25% (resp. 30%) of
bandwidth (resp. computation) resources are used by the broadcasters who do not
have any viewers at all. In this paper, we closely examine the challenge of
handling unpopular live-broadcasting channels in CLS systems and present a
comprehensive solution for service partitioning on hybrid cloud. The
trace-driven evaluation shows that our hybrid cloud-assisted design can smartly
assign ingesting and transcoding tasks to the elastic cloud virtual machines,
providing flexible system deployment cost-effectively
