    Distributed and Load-Adaptive Self Configuration in Sensor Networks

    Proactive self-configuration is crucial for MANETs such as sensor networks, as these are often deployed in hostile environments and are ad hoc in nature. The dynamic architecture of the network is monitored by exchanging so-called Network State Beacons (NSBs) between key network nodes. The Beacon Exchange rate and the network state define both the time and nature of a proactive action to combat network performance degradation at a time of crisis. It is thus essential to optimize these parameters for the dynamic load profile of the network. This paper presents a novel distributed adaptive optimization Beacon Exchange selection model which considers distributed network load for energy efficient monitoring and proactive reconfiguration of the network. The results show an improvement of 70% in throughput, while maintaining a guaranteed quality-of- service for a small control-traffic overhead

    Cross-layer signalling and middleware: a survey for inelastic soft real-time applications in MANETs

    This paper provides a review of the different cross-layer design and protocol tuning approaches that may be used to meet a growing need to support inelastic soft real-time streams in MANETs. These streams are characterised by critical timing and throughput requirements and low packet loss tolerance levels. Many cross-layer approaches exist either for provision of QoS to soft real-time streams in static wireless networks or to improve the performance of real and non-real-time transmissions in MANETs. The common ground and lessons learned from these approaches, with a view to the potential provision of much needed support to real-time applications in MANETs, is therefore discussed

    Green Cellular Networks: A Survey, Some Research Issues and Challenges

    Energy efficiency in cellular networks is a growing concern for cellular operators to not only maintain profitability, but also to reduce the overall environment effects. This emerging trend of achieving energy efficiency in cellular networks is motivating the standardization authorities and network operators to continuously explore future technologies in order to bring improvements in the entire network infrastructure. In this article, we present a brief survey of methods to improve the power efficiency of cellular networks, explore some research issues and challenges and suggest some techniques to enable an energy efficient or "green" cellular network. Since base stations consume a maximum portion of the total energy used in a cellular system, we will first provide a comprehensive survey on techniques to obtain energy savings in base stations. Next, we discuss how heterogeneous network deployment based on micro, pico and femto-cells can be used to achieve this goal. Since cognitive radio and cooperative relaying are undisputed future technologies in this regard, we propose a research vision to make these technologies more energy efficient.     QoS Routing of VoIP using a Modified Widest-Shortest Routing Algorithm

    Implementation of current real time services (of which one of the more important is Voice over IP) on the current Internet face many obstacles, among them the issue of routing. Quality of service (QoS) routing, attempts to provide real time services with the required guarantees to achieve acceptable performance. In this paper we study VoIP routing using the Quality of Service (QSR) network simulator utilizing the Widest-Shortest routing algorithm to provide QoS using different metrics. We show that this algorithm using a modified cost metric based on the hop-normalized is able to route real time traffic away from congested links thus providing acceptable jitter, end-to-end delay and throughput to satisfy real time services requirements

    Satellite system performance assessment for in-flight entertainment and air traffic control

    Concurrent satellite systems have been proposed for IFE (In-Flight Entertainment) communications, thus demonstrating the capability of satellites to provide multimedia access to users in aircraft cabin. At the same time, an increasing interest in the use of satellite communications for ATC (Air Traffic Control) has been motivated by the increasing load of traditional radio links mainly in the VHF band, and uses the extended capacities the satellite may provide. However, the development of a dedicated satellite system for ATS (Air Traffic Services) and AOC (Airline Operational Communications) seems to be a long-term perspective. The objective of the presented system design is to provide both passenger application traffic access (Internet, GSM) and a high-reliability channel for aeronautical applications using the same satellite links. Due to the constraints in capacity and radio bandwidth allocation, very high frequencies (above 20 GHz) are considered here. The corresponding design implications for the air interface are taken into account and access performances are derived using a dedicated simulation model. Some preliminary results are shown in this paper to demonstrate the technical feasibility of such system design with increased capacity. More details and the open issues will be studied in the future of this research work
