    High precision motion control of parallel robots with imperfections and manufacturing tolerances

    This work attempts to achieve precise motion control using parallel robots with manufacturing tolerances and inaccuracies by migrating the measurements from their joint space to task space in order to decrease control system’s sensitivity to any kinematical uncertainty rather than calibrating the parallel plant. The problem of dynamical model uncertainties and its effect on the derivation of the control law is also addressed in this work through disturbance estimation and compensation. Eventually, both task space measurement and disturbance estimation are combined to formulate a control framework that is unsensitive to either kinematical and dynamical system uncertainties

    Automating Robot Planning Using Product and Manufacturing Information

    AbstractAdvances in sensing, modeling, and control have made it possible to increase the accuracy of robots, and enable them to perform in dynamic environments. Often, performance deficiencies are not evident until late in the development of the manufacturing process, which delays the beginning of production and may cause damage to parts that have already undergone costly manufacturing steps. The goal of this research is to determine if a robot can meet manufacturing requirements, how to optimally plan robot activities, and to monitor robot processes to track performance. To achieve this, representations of product and manufacturing information and robot capabilities should be carried through the design, process planning, production, and analysis phases. Standards for the exchange of this information have been developed, such as ISO 10303 Part 242 for semantic product and manufacturing information and device kinematics, and the Robot Operating System Industrial specification for robot modeling, path planning, and execution. This paper surveys the relevant technologies and standards needed to enable automated deployment of robots in new application areas

    Generic Techniques for the Calibration of Robots with Application of the 3-D Fixtures and Statistical Technique on the PUMA 500 and ARID Robots

    A relatively simple, inexpensive, and generic technique that could be used in both laboratories and some operation site environments is introduced at the Robotics Applications and Development Laboratory (RADL) at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). In addition, this report gives a detailed explanation of the set up procedure, data collection, and analysis using this new technique that was developed at the State University of New York at Farmingdale. The technique was used to evaluate the repeatability, accuracy, and overshoot of the Unimate Industrial Robot, PUMA 500. The data were statistically analyzed to provide an insight into the performance of the systems and components of the robot. Also, the same technique was used to check the forward kinematics against the inverse kinematics of RADL's PUMA robot. Recommendations were made for RADL to use this technique for laboratory calibration of the currently existing robots such as the ASEA, high speed controller, Automated Radiator Inspection Device (ARID) etc. Also, recommendations were made to develop and establish other calibration techniques that will be more suitable for site calibration environment and robot certification

    Kinematic calibration of Orthoglide-type mechanisms from observation of parallel leg motions

    The paper proposes a new calibration method for parallel manipulators that allows efficient identification of the joint offsets using observations of the manipulator leg parallelism with respect to the base surface. The method employs a simple and low-cost measuring system, which evaluates deviation of the leg location during motions that are assumed to preserve the leg parallelism for the nominal values of the manipulator parameters. Using the measured deviations, the developed algorithm estimates the joint offsets that are treated as the most essential parameters to be identified. The validity of the proposed calibration method and efficiency of the developed numerical algorithms are confirmed by experimental results. The sensitivity of the measurement methods and the calibration accuracy are also studied

    Development of robots and application to industrial processes

    An algorithm is presented for using a robot system with a single camera to position in three-dimensional space a slender object for insertion into a hole; for example, an electrical pin-type termination into a connector hole. The algorithm relies on a control-configured end effector to achieve the required horizontal translations and rotational motion, and it does not require camera calibration. A force sensor in each fingertip is integrated with the vision system to allow the robot to teach itself new reference points when different connectors and pins are used. Variability in the grasped orientation and position of the pin can be accomodated with the sensor system. Performance tests show that the system is feasible. More work is needed to determine more precisely the effects of lighting levels and lighting direction

    Advancement in robot programming with specific reference to graphical methods

    This research study is concerned with the derivation of advanced robot programming methods. The methods include the use of proprietary simulation modelling and design software tools for the off-line programming of industrial robots. The study has involved the generation of integration software to facilitate the co-operative operation of these software tools. The three major researcli'themes7of "ease of usage", calibration and the integration of product design data have been followed to advance robot programming. The "ease of usage" is concerned with enhancements in the man-machine interface for robo t simulation systems in terms of computer assisted solid modelling and computer assisted task generation. Robot simulation models represent an idealised situation, and any off-line robot programs generated from'them may contain'discrepancies which could seriously effect thq programs' performance; Calibration techniques have therefore been investigated as 'a method of overcoming discrepancies between the simulation model and the real world. At the present time, most computer aided design systems operate as isolated islands of computer technology, whereas their product databases should be used to support decision making processes and ultimately facilitate the generation of machine programs. Thus the integration of product design data has been studied as an important step towards truly computer integrated manufacturing. The functionality of the three areas of study have been generalised and form the basis for recommended enhancements to future robot programming systems

    Improving robotic machining accuracy through experimental error investigation and modular compensation

    Machining using industrial robots is currently limited to applications with low geometrical accuracies and soft materials. This paper analyzes the sources of errors in robotic machining and characterizes them in amplitude and frequency. Experiments under different conditions represent a typical set of industrial applications and allow a qualified evaluation. Based on this analysis, a modular approach is proposed to overcome these obstacles, applied both during program generation (offline) and execution (online). Predictive offline compensation of machining errors is achieved by means of an innovative programming system, based on kinematic and dynamic robot models. Real-time adaptive machining error compensation is also provided by sensing the real robot positions with an innovative tracking system and corrective feedback to both the robot and an additional high-dynamic compensation mechanism on piezo-actuator basis

    Kinematic Modeling, Linearization and First-Order Error Analysis

    This chapter deals with a modular method for the kinematic analysis of parallel kinematic machines (PKM) at discrete points within their workspace. Firstly, a modular approach is presented for calculating the forward kinematic transmission function of some widely used parallel kinematic machines. This includes the well-known Stewart-Gough-platforms of general geometry, the Delta-robots, and parallel machines with legs of constant length. The kinematic analysis is based on the kinetostatic method and permits to calculate the position, velocity, and acceleration transmission from the articulated joints towards the moveable platform of the machine. Furthermore, a force transmission is defined based on kinetostatic duality. By means of a simple numerical calculation schema, a comprehensive first-order sensitivity analysis is performed. Finally, it is shown how to set up the stiffness matrix for the aforementioned robots. Computational examples of the proposed algorithms are presented

This area of research from the very beginning includes drives, process technology, actuators, sensors, control systems and all connections in mechatronic systems. Automation and robotics form broad-spectrum areas of research, which are tightly interconnected. To reduce costs in the pre-production stage and to reduce production preparation time, it is necessary to solve complex tasks in the form of simulation with the use of standard software products and new technologies that allow, for example, machine vision and other imaging tools to examine new physical contexts, dependencies and connections
