The Code of Protest. Images of Peace in the West German Peace Movements, 1945-1990
The article examines posters produced by the peace movements in the Federal Republic of
Germany during the ColdWar, with an analytical focus on the transformation of the iconography
of peace in modernity. Was it possible to develop an independent, positive depiction of peace
in the context of protests for peace and disarmament? Despite its name, the pictorial selfrepresentation
of the campaign ‘Fight against Nuclear Death’ in the late 1950s did not draw
on the theme of pending nuclear mass death. The large-scale protest movement in the 1980s
against NATO’s 1979 ‘double-track’ decision contrasted female peacefulness with masculine
aggression in an emotionally charged pictorial symbolism. At the same time this symbolism
marked a break with the pacifist iconographic tradition that had focused on the victims of war.
Instead, the movement presented itself with images of demonstrating crowds, as an anticipation
of its peaceful ends. Drawing on the concept of asymmetrical communicative ‘codes’ that has
been developed in sociological systems theory, the article argues that the iconography of peace in
peace movement posters could not develop a genuinely positive vision of peace, since the code of
protest can articulate the designation value ‘peace’ only in conjunction with the rejection value
‘war’
A quantum of solace? European peace movements during the Cold War and their elective affinities
The article discusses the European dimension of antinuclear protests in Europe during the Cold War. In conceptual terms, explanations of peace movement mobilisation during
the early 1980s as result of a value change to post-materialist values are criticised. Contrary to this interpretation, peace activists, in particular women’s peace protests, stressed the material shortcomings they faced as a results of expenditure on nuclear armaments.
In terms of their European character, antinuclear activists during the first mobilisation wave until 1963 developed substantial transnational contacts, but kept an orientation towards their nation as an identity space. During the campaign against the Euromissiles in the early 1980s, an increasingly dense network of elective affinities according to – for instance – denomination or professional expertise emerged. Attempts to connect peace activists on both sides of the Iron Curtain in a ›détente from below‹, however, eere hampered by practical problems and divergent perceptions of the political situation. Even while movement activists interacted and coordinated their efforts across national borders, they did not simply merge into a European civil society. Success Factors of European Syndromic Surveillance Systems: A Worked Example of Applying Qualitative Comparative Analysis
Introduction: Syndromic surveillance aims at augmenting traditional public health surveillance with timely information. To gain a head start, it mainly analyses existing data such as from web searches or patient records. Despite the setup of many syndromic surveillance systems, there is still much doubt about the benefit of the approach. There are diverse interactions between performance indicators such as timeliness and various system characteristics. This makes the performance assessment of syndromic surveillance systems a complex endeavour. We assessed if the comparison of several syndromic surveillance systems through Qualitative Comparative Analysis helps to evaluate performance and identify key success factors.
Materials and Methods: We compiled case-based, mixed data on performance and characteristics of 19 syndromic surveillance systems in Europe from scientific and grey literature and from site visits. We identified success factors by applying crisp-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. We focused on two main areas of syndromic surveillance application: seasonal influenza surveillance and situational awareness during different types of potentially health threatening events.
Results: We found that syndromic surveillance systems might detect the onset or peak of seasonal influenza earlier if they analyse non-clinical data sources. Timely situational awareness during different types of events is supported by an automated syndromic surveillance system capable of analysing multiple syndromes. To our surprise, the analysis of multiple data sources was no key success factor for situational awareness.
Conclusions: We suggest to consider these key success factors when designing or further developing syndromic surveillance systems. Qualitative Comparative Analysis helped interpreting complex, mixed data on small-N cases and resulted in concrete and practically relevant findings
Crossover between ionic/covalent and pure ionic bonding in magnesium oxyde clusters
An empirical potential with fluctuating charges is proposed for modelling
(MgO)_n clusters in both the molecular (small n) and bulk (n->infty) regimes.
Vectorial polarization forces are explicitely taken into account in the
self-consistent determination of the charges. Our model predicts cuboid cluster
structures, in agreement with previous experimental and theoretical results.
The effective charge transferred between magnesium and oxygen smoothly
increases from 1 to 2, with an estimated crossover size above 300 MgO
molecules
Normal-superconducting transition induced by high current densities in YBa2Cu3O7-d melt-textured samples and thin films: Similarities and differences
Current-voltage characteristics of top seeded melt-textured YBa2Cu3O7-d are
presented. The samples were cut out of centimetric monoliths. Films
characteristics were also measured on microbridges patterned on thin films
grown by dc sputtering. For both types of samples, a quasi-discontinuity or
quenching was observed for a current density J* several times the critical
current density Jc. Though films and bulks much differ in their magnitude of
both Jc and J*, a proposal is made as to a common intrinsic origin of the
quenching phenomenon. The unique temperature dependence observed for the ratio
J*/Jc, as well as the explanation of the pre-quenching regime in terms of a
