    Patient Experience Journal (PXJ) is excited to announce the call for submissions for its July/August 2023 special issue focused on exploring the emerging frontiers of human experience in healthcare. As shared in the recent PXJ article, Reexamining “Defining Patient Experience”: The human experience in healthcare: The rapid evolution in the recognition of the humanity in healthcare has required us to view the human healthcare experience not just as a person-centered process or relationship-based encounter. It is an intricate tapestry of human interaction both in the clinical and non-clinical settings across the continuum of care and into the communities served by healthcare organizations around the world. It must take into account the experiences of those who work in healthcare and the experiences communities have with healthcare organizations and systems overall. This perspective pushes us to look beyond the essential questions of what matters to patients, family members or care partners to appreciate how the patient experience is shaped by the needs of the healthcare workforce and the communities they serve around the world. These ideas, reinforced in the recent Declaration for Human Experience (https://transformhx.org/) call on us to think about where the efforts to transform the human experience in healthcare are leading. This special issue is intended to push those boundaries even further

    Patient Experience Journal (PXJ) is excited to announce the call for submissions for its July 2021 special issue on the impact of racial inequality, health disparities, and discrimination on the human experience. The world now finds itself in the grips of a global pandemic that is taking its toll on communities socially and economically, placing strain on healthcare workers and revealing the very systemic weaknesses and inherent biases that have been resting just beneath the surface of our society for years. The challenge of disparity and inequity is not unique to healthcare, but in the era of COVID-19, what many knew to be true has been laid bare for all to see. The July 2020 issue of PX Pulse (https://www.theberylinstitute.org/PXPULSE) further revealed a great imbalance in how experience is perceived dependent on race and gender and highlighted the real experiences of discrimination that people are facing in healthcare today. This special issue will explore the impact of these fundamental challenges on our ability to deliver on experience overall. The issue will look for pieces that address evidence-based efforts at measuring the impact of inequity and disparities, reveal practices that are focused on addressing the challenges inequity and disparity create and share personal stories of the impact these issues have had. Through this special issue, PXJ looks to not only build a foundational collection of knowledge and information that will continue to push the conversation on experience forward but also create a platform for action in addressing this issue that weighs heavily on the heart of healthcare

    Call for Submissions - Special Issue July 2019: The Role of Technology and Innovation in Patient Experience

    Patient Experience Journal (PXJ) is excited to announce the call for submissions for its July 2019 special issue on the topic of the role of technology in patient & family experience. A focus on technology and innovation will be essential in healthcare experience, requiring new ways of thinking and doing and the technologies and tools to ensure efficiencies, expand capacities and extend boundaries of care. This special issue is open to all authors conducting cutting-edge research, implementing innovative practices or with powerful experiences to share around efforts in either creating or implementing technology focused on positively impacting the patient experience and/or expanding efforts through innovative practices and processes that push at the conventional wisdom of approaching patient experience efforts. The issue will look for pieces that address evidence-based efforts at improvement, practices that have impact on outcomes or stories that reflect the true meaning and opportunity in bringing technology and innovation to patient & family experience. It will provide an opportunity to highlight accomplishments, reveal new findings and contribute to the literature aimed at improving results. The issue will be guest edited by Timothy R.     Special Issue – July/August 2020: Sustaining a Focus on Human Experience in the Face of COVID-19

    At this critical time in our shared history, we are faced with a powerful challenge, the rapid impact of COVID-19 on our healthcare systems and community. With that acknowledgement, we are refocusing our 2020 special issue of Patient Experience Journal (PXJ) to address Sustaining a Focus on Human Experience in the Face of COVID-19. Submissions received for our initially planned special issue on patient & family experience in behavioral health will remain in review and consideration for future issues of PXJ. There are heroic efforts taking place minute-by-minute to address the clinical and personal needs of patients, while also addressing the physical and emotional needs of those providing and supporting the delivery of care. While the pace of the crisis can be overwhelming and challenging, incredible efforts are underway to manage the intricacies of human need at this time. At its heart, healthcare has been, is and will remain human beings caring for human beings, and in that light significant efforts are taking place, no matter how big or small to address the human experience happening now. Whether addressing the challenges of connection in isolation for patients and families to the burdens of endless and continuous shifts for those providing care, the efforts to ensure not only positive clinical outcomes but also a human experience has never been greater. The moment in which we find ourselves reinforces more than ever that experience is not about survey scores or satisfaction. Rather it is about the efforts we make to acknowledge the person in front of us, to listen, to show dignity and respect, to communicate in ways that are clear and understandable and ultimately to stand with one another. The efforts taking place in healthcare organizations and communities globally represent what is best in humanity, and we invite you to – and hope you will – share your stories here

With a continued focus on the critical role of behavioral health in society today and a growing recognition of the importance of experience for those in behavioral health settings, a conversation on the practices in place and the identification of evidence of efforts leading to positive outcomes will be essential expanding the experience conversation in this setting. This special issue is open to all authors conducting cutting-edge research, implementing innovative practices or with powerful experiences to share around efforts to address the patient and family experience in behavioral health settings. The issue will look for pieces that address evidence-based efforts at improvement, practices that have impact on outcomes or stories that reflect the opportunities for elevating the human experience in behavioral health. In looking across care settings and across behavioral health issues, this special issue of PXJ looks to build a foundational collection of knowledge and information that will continue to push the conversation on experience forward. It will provide an opportunity to highlight accomplishments, reveal new findings and contribute to the literature aimed at improving results for all looking to ensure excellence in behavioral health settings.     Special Issue 2024: Transforming Experience in Non-Hospital Settings

    Patient Experience Journal(PXJ) is excited to announce the call for submissions for its July/August 2024 special issue focused on exploring how healthcare organizations are transforming experience in non-hospital settings. So much of the experience conversation has been focused on and driven by the hospital setting – from acute care, to pediatrics, safety net hospitals and more. While this focus remains essential to some of the most critical care delivered in the healthcare ecosystem, it is important to recognize the volume of care being provided in new and existing settings. This special issue seeks to uncover and elevate the practices happening in non-hospital settings and highlight research and evidence showing how efforts in these spaces is truly transforming the human experience in healthcare. These efforts can be the implementation of new programs or processes, research that tests new processes or programs, cases that share how organizations are working to elevate the experience they provide, be it in clinics or outpatient spaces, and even in people’s homes. As the healthcare marketplace continues to dramatically shift, so too do the opportunities to ensure a conversation on experience is deeply rooted in these transformations. The reality is that as much as has been learned from and shared by the hospital setting, there is a vast expanse of organization experience and expertise that can advance the broader experience movement. Well before the pandemic and elevated by it, the importance of the healthcare workforce in ensuing the best in experience has been essential. It is why at the heart of the definition of patient experience itself, that culture is identified as an essential element. More so, the Declaration for Human Experience (https://transformhx.org/) reinforced this through a foundational commitment to “understand and act on the needs and vulnerabilities of the healthcare workforce to honor their commitment and reaffirm and reenergize their purpose.” This special issue will look for pieces that address evidence-based efforts at addressing workforce experience, reveal practices that are focused on caring for the healthcare workforce and share personal stories of the impact these issues have had.
