Real-Time Planning with Primitives for Dynamic Walking over Uneven Terrain
We present an algorithm for receding-horizon motion planning using a finite
family of motion primitives for underactuated dynamic walking over uneven
terrain. The motion primitives are defined as virtual holonomic constraints,
and the special structure of underactuated mechanical systems operating subject
to virtual constraints is used to construct closed-form solutions and a special
binary search tree that dramatically speed up motion planning. We propose a
greedy depth-first search and discuss improvement using energy-based
heuristics. The resulting algorithm can plan several footsteps ahead in a
fraction of a second for both the compass-gait walker and a planar
7-Degree-of-freedom/five-link walker.Comment: Conference submissio
A geometric approach to three-dimensional hipped bipedal robotic walking
This paper presents a control law that results in stable walking for a three-dimensional bipedal robot with a hip. To obtain this control law, we utilize techniques from geometric reduction, and specifically a variant of Routhian reduction termed functional Routhian reduction, to effectively decouple the dynamics of the three-dimensional biped into its sagittal and lateral components. Motivated by the decoupling afforded by functional Routhian reduction, the control law we present is obtained by combining three separate control laws: the first shapes the potential energy of the sagittal dynamics of the biped to obtain stable walking gaits when it is constrained to the sagittal plane, the second shapes the total energy of the walker so that functional Routhian reduction can be applied to decoupling the dynamics of the walker for certain initial conditions, and the third utilizes an output zeroing controller to stabilize to the surface defining these initial conditions. We numerically verify that this method results in stable walking, and we discuss certain attributes of this walking gait
An Energy Efficient Knee Locking Mechanism for a Dynamically Walking Robot
In this work, we present the design and the implementation of an innovative knee locking mechanism for a dynamically walking robot. The mechanism consists of a four-bar linkage that realizes a mechanical singularity for locking the knee when the leg is in the extended position. Once extended, the knee remains locked without energy consumption, while unlocking it only costs a small amount of energy. Tests showed that the robot walks robustly and that the energy consumption of the new system is low
Push recovery with stepping strategy based on time-projection control
In this paper, we present a simple control framework for on-line push
recovery with dynamic stepping properties. Due to relatively heavy legs in our
robot, we need to take swing dynamics into account and thus use a linear model
called 3LP which is composed of three pendulums to simulate swing and torso
dynamics. Based on 3LP equations, we formulate discrete LQR controllers and use
a particular time-projection method to adjust the next footstep location
on-line during the motion continuously. This adjustment, which is found based
on both pelvis and swing foot tracking errors, naturally takes the swing
dynamics into account. Suggested adjustments are added to the Cartesian 3LP
gaits and converted to joint-space trajectories through inverse kinematics.
Fixed and adaptive foot lift strategies also ensure enough ground clearance in
perturbed walking conditions. The proposed structure is robust, yet uses very
simple state estimation and basic position tracking. We rely on the physical
series elastic actuators to absorb impacts while introducing simple laws to
compensate their tracking bias. Extensive experiments demonstrate the
functionality of different control blocks and prove the effectiveness of
time-projection in extreme push recovery scenarios. We also show self-produced
and emergent walking gaits when the robot is subject to continuous dragging
forces. These gaits feature dynamic walking robustness due to relatively soft
springs in the ankles and avoiding any Zero Moment Point (ZMP) control in our

Straight-Leg Walking Through Underconstrained Whole-Body Control
We present an approach for achieving a natural, efficient gait on bipedal
robots using straightened legs and toe-off. Our algorithm avoids complex height
planning by allowing a whole-body controller to determine the straightest
possible leg configuration at run-time. The controller solutions are biased
towards a straight leg configuration by projecting leg joint angle objectives
into the null-space of the other quadratic program motion objectives. To allow
the legs to remain straight throughout the gait, toe-off was utilized to
increase the kinematic reachability of the legs. The toe-off motion is achieved
through underconstraining the foot position, allowing it to emerge naturally.
We applied this approach of under-specifying the motion objectives to the Atlas
humanoid, allowing it to walk over a variety of terrain. We present both
experimental and simulation results and discuss performance limitations and
