On the Achievable Rates of Multihop Virtual Full-Duplex Relay Channels
We study a multihop "virtual" full-duplex relay channel as a special case of
a general multiple multicast relay network. For such channel,
quantize-map-and-forward (QMF) (or noisy network coding (NNC)) achieves the
cut-set upper bound within a constant gap where the gap grows {\em linearly}
with the number of relay stages . However, this gap may not be negligible
for the systems with multihop transmissions (i.e., a wireless backhaul
operating at higher frequencies). We have recently attained an improved result
to the capacity scaling where the gap grows {\em logarithmically} as ,
by using an optimal quantization at relays and by exploiting relays' messages
(decoded in the previous time slot) as side-information. In this paper, we
further improve the performance of this network by presenting a mixed scheme
where each relay can perform either decode-and-forward (DF) or QMF with
possibly rate-splitting. We derive the achievable rate and show that the
proposed scheme outperforms the QMF-optimized scheme. Furthermore, we
demonstrate that this performance improvement increases with .Comment: To be presented at ISIT 201
Asymptotic Capacity of Large Relay Networks with Conferencing Links
In this correspondence, we consider a half-duplex large relay network, which
consists of one source-destination pair and relay nodes, each of which is
connected with a subset of the other relays via signal-to-noise ratio
(SNR)-limited out-of-band conferencing links. The asymptotic achievable rates
of two basic relaying schemes with the "-portion" conferencing strategy are
studied: For the decode-and-forward (DF) scheme, we prove that the DF rate
scales as ; for the amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme, we
prove that it asymptotically achieves the capacity upper bound in some
interesting scenarios as goes to infinity.Comment: submitted to IEEE Transactions on Communication
Cooperative Symbol-Based Signaling for Networks with Multiple Relays
Wireless channels suffer from severe inherent impairments and hence
reliable and high data rate wireless transmission is particularly challenging to
achieve. Fortunately, using multiple antennae improves performance in wireless
transmission by providing space diversity, spatial multiplexing, and power gains.
However, in wireless ad-hoc networks multiple antennae may not be acceptable
due to limitations in size, cost, and hardware complexity. As a result, cooperative
relaying strategies have attracted considerable attention because of their abilities
to take advantage of multi-antenna by using multiple single-antenna relays.
This study is to explore cooperative signaling for different relay networks,
such as multi-hop relay networks formed by multiple single-antenna relays and
multi-stage relay networks formed by multiple relaying stages with each stage
holding several single-antenna relays. The main contribution of this study is the
development of a new relaying scheme for networks using symbol-level
modulation, such as binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and quadrature phase shift
keying (QPSK). We also analyze effects of this newly developed scheme when it
is used with space-time coding in a multi-stage relay network. Simulation results
demonstrate that the new scheme outperforms previously proposed schemes:
amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme and decode-and-forward (DF) scheme
