Ідеї дарвінізму в романі Едіт Вортон «Напівсон»

The article is devoted to the analysis of the problem of presence of Darwinism ideas in E. Wharton's novel “Twilight Sleep”. The relevance of the study is due to insufficient research of the influence of Darwin’s ideas on the development of the world literary process of the late nineteenth - early twentieth century in modern literary criticism. Therefore, the objective of the research is to interpret E. Wharton’s novel “Twilight Sleep” from the standpoint of Darwinism. To achieve this goal, it is advisable to solve the following tasks: 1) to analyze the effect of natural selection on the lives of characters in the novel “Twilight Sleep”; 2) to consider the behavior of the characters in the context of sexual selection; 3) to study the influence of Darwinism on E. Wharton.It is proved that natural selection underlies the social processes depicted in the novel at the beginning of the twentieth century, which marked the decline of the ancient tribal nobility and the emergence of the social life of nouveau riche capitalists. Excessively conservative New York aristocrats cannot adapt to life in the postwar world, and therefore lose the struggle for existence to the nouveau riche, whose active social position allows them to quickly and effectively adapt to any external conditions. The principles of sexual selection are manifested in the rivalry of heroes of one sex for possession of heroes of the opposite sex in order to create a family and have children. According to Darwinism, when choosing a partner, women in the novel “Twilight Sleep” pay attention to a man’s financial position, his capabilities and social status, and men - to a woman’s appearance, intelligence and social status. The heroines who successfully undergo natural and sexual selection, manage to start a family and have children (Lita Wyant, Pauline Manford). As Nona Manford does not undergo natural and sexual selection, she remains single and childless.It is established that the influence of Darwinist ideas can be traced to the peculiarities of E. Wharton’s idiostyle. Following Charles Darwin’s scientific style, who provides numerous illustrations from the life of nature to confirm his theory, the writer compares her characters with representatives of flora and fauna, which contributes to their semi-animalistic image.Статтю присвячено аналізу проблеми наявності ідей дарвінізму в романі Е. Вортон «Напівсон». Актуальність дослідження зумовлена недостатнім вивченням питання про вплив ідей Ч. Дарвіна на розвиток світового літературного процесу кінця ХІХ-го – початку ХХ-го століття в сучасному літературознавстві. Тож метою розвідки є проінтерпретувати роман Е. Вортон «Напівсон» з позицій дарвінізму. Для досягнення цієї мети доцільно вирішити наступні завдання: 1) проаналізувати дію природного добору на життя персонажів у романі «Напівсон», 2) розглянути поведінку персонажів роману в контексті статевого добору, 3) вивчити влив дарвінізму на ідіостиль Е. Вортон.Доведено, що природний добір лежить в основі зображених у романі соціальних процесів на початку ХХ-го століття, що знаменували занепад давньої родової знаті й вихід на перший план громадського життя нуворишів-капіталістів. Надміру консервативні нью-йоркські аристократи не можуть пристосуватися до життя в умовах повоєнного світу, а тому програють боротьбу за існування нуворишам, чия активна соціальна позиція дозволяє їм швидко й ефективно адаптуватися до будь-яких зовнішніх умов. Принципи статевого добору проявляються в суперництві героїв однієї статі за володіння героями протилежної статі з метою створення сім’ї й заведення потомків. Відповідно до положень дарвінізму, при виборі пари жінки в романі «Напівсон» звертають увагу на фінансове становище чоловіка, його можливості й соціальний статус, а чоловіки – на зовнішність жінки, її інтелект і соціальне становище. Героїням, які успішно проходять природний і статевий добір, вдається створити сім’ю й завести потомство (Літа Ваянт, Полін Менфорд). Оскільки Нона Менфорд не проходить природний і статевий добір, вона залишається самотньою і бездітною.Встановлено, що вплив ідей дарвінізму прослідковується й на особливостях ідіостилю Е. Вортон. Наслідуючи науковий стиль Ч. Дарвіна, який для підтвердження своєї теорії наводить численні ілюстрації з життя природи, письменниця порівнює своїх персонажів з представниками флори та фавни, що сприяє їх напів анімалістичному зображенню

Discovering Jewish Studies Collections in Academic Libraries: A Practical Guide

The U.S. colleges and universities offering non-sectarian educational programs in Jewish Studies rely on the support of their academic libraries for research materials and library services. For college libraries which use Library of Congress Classification scheme, it is a common practice to integrate studies resources into their general library collections. Since Jewish Studies sources span a vast number of subjects within all major disciplines, shelving integration leads to the dispersion of all relevant sources and such dispersion in turn leads to a variety of problems for library professionals and library users. For collection development librarians the problems range from lack of information about collection\u27s size, strengths or weaknesses, and for library users interested in browsing the collection, dispersion of subjects creates a major roadblock. This practical guide aims at providing a solution to such problems. By identifying all relevant Library of Congress call numbers and the corresponding Library of Congress subject headings, the guide offers a simplified access to Jewish Studies sources in general library collections. It is arranged by four major discipline: Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and General Works & Bibliographies. Within each discipline, specific LC call number ranges and corresponding subjects are listed. The subjects are further subdivided and precisely identified. The guide will assist collection development librarians, library liaisons, grants and fundraising professionals and especially the Jewish Studies faculty and students, in identifying and locating relevant sources
